## About the book

Adh Chanani Raat, "Night of the Half-Moon", is the novel that carried Gurdial Singh from critical respect to national recognition. Published in 1972, it came eight years after Marhi Da Diva (1964), the debut that had announced a new kind of Punjabi novel: spare, unsentimental, rooted in the soil of Malwa. Where Marhi Da Diva was the breakthrough, Adh Chanani Raat was the consolidation, the book that proved its author was not a one-work phenomenon but the defining novelist of Punjab's rural poor.

The title itself is characteristic of Gurdial Singh's art. A half-moon gives half-light: enough to see by, not enough to see clearly. The novel lives in that half-light, between tradition and change, between the old feudal order and a modernity that keeps failing to arrive, between what its people endure and what they can barely hope for.

The novel's 1972 publication date matters. Punjab was changing fast, the Green Revolution was remaking the countryside Gurdial Singh had grown up in, enriching some farmers while deepening the divide between those with land and those without. Adh Chanani Raat is, among other things, a record of that transition written from below: not the official story of agricultural triumph, but the view from the households the triumph left behind. The half-moon of the title could stand for the half-kept promises of development itself.
\## Plot & themes

Like all of Gurdial Singh's fiction, the novel is set in the Malwa region of Punjab, the economically backward but culturally rich country he knew from his own life as a village schoolteacher. Its people are the dispossessed, small farmers, labourers, women with no room to move, living inside a social order built on caste, debt, and deference.

The book's realism is its argument. Gurdial Singh refuses both romanticism and melodrama; his villagers are neither noble savages nor helpless victims. They are, in the phrase critics return to again and again, "individualised yet typical concretisations" of their world, people whose private hungers and humiliations are inseparable from the economic machinery around them. The novel moves between the intimate and the systemic: a debt, a harvest, a marriage negotiation, and behind each, the slow grind of a countryside being remade by forces its people cannot name.

If Marhi Da Diva was about death and ritual, Adh Chanani Raat is about endurance, the stubborn, unglamorous business of surviving a world that offers little and takes much.

Critics have often paired this novel with Marhi Da Diva as a diptych of Malwa life, death and ritual in the first, endurance and half-light in the second. What unites them is method: Gurdial Singh builds his fiction out of the small, verifiable textures of village existence, the weight of a debt, the politics of a well, the exact words of a quarrel, until the accumulation becomes overwhelming. There are no villains in the melodramatic sense, only structures: caste, money, custom. The effect is cumulative rather than climactic, which is why the books stay with readers the way weather stays with you.
\## The author

Gurdial Singh was born in 1933 in Jaitu, in the Malwa region, and worked for years as a schoolteacher, a vantage point that gave his fiction its unmatched ear for village speech and its unsparing eye for village power. He began publishing short stories in the late 1950s before Marhi Da Diva (1964) made him famous as a novelist.

The honours accumulated: the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975 for Adh Chanani Raat, the Padma Shri in 1998, and in 1999 the Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honour, shared that year with the Hindi writer Nirmal Verma, making him the second Punjabi writer to receive it. His other major novels include Anhoe (1966), Anhe Ghore Da Daan (1976), and the late masterpiece Parsa (1991). He died in 2016, widely mourned as the conscience of modern Punjabi fiction.

The schoolteacher years are the key to the fiction. Gurdial Singh taught in village schools while writing the novels that would make him famous, and the classroom gave him what no amount of research could: the daily, intimate observation of how power speaks in a village, who may sit, who must stand, whose children are beaten and whose are praised. His ear for dialogue, widely considered the finest in modern Punjabi prose, was trained on those schoolyards and staff rooms.
\## Reception & legacy

The Sahitya Akademi Award of 1975 confirmed what critics had been saying since Marhi Da Diva: that Gurdial Singh had permanently changed what a Punjabi novel could do. Along with that debut, Adh Chanani Raat was translated into English as Night of the Half Moon by Macmillan, carrying his Malwa to readers far beyond Punjab.

The novel remains a staple of Punjabi literature syllabi and of critical writing on the realist tradition. Its achievement, to make the half-lit world of the dispossessed fully visible without ever condescending to it, is the standard against which later Punjabi social realism is still measured.

The Macmillan English translation, Night of the Half Moon, deserves emphasis: in the 1970s and 80s, very few Punjabi novels reached English readers at all, and Gurdial Singh was among the first to cross over. That translation, together with the National Book Trust's Parsa, made him the representative Punjabi novelist for a generation of Indian readers in English, the Malwa realist against whom others were measured.
\## Read it if...

You want the essential Gurdial Singh: unsparing, humane, and rooted. It pairs naturally with Marhi Da Diva, and with the work of his great contemporary in another register, the Partition novelists, the same Punjab, seen from its villages rather than its cities.

You believe the best fiction is a form of attention, and want to see what sustained, unsentimental attention to village life can reveal. It is also the ideal first Gurdial Singh for readers daunted by Marhi Da Diva's bleakness: the half-moon, after all, still gives light.
