## About the book

Agg Di Khed, in English 'A Game of Fire', is a Punjabi novel by Nanak Singh, first published in 1948\. It is the sequel to his novel Khoon De Sohile, and together the two books form his great Partition narrative: the first follows a village in the Pothohar country through the massacres of 1947, the second moves to Amritsar as the city itself tore apart.

Nanak Singh wrote from inside the event. He had lived in Amritsar, kept a grocery shop there, and had already survived one massacre, at Jallianwala Bagh in 1919, an experience that marked all his later work. Agg Di Khed appeared within a year of Partition, while the refugee columns were still on the roads, and it reads as testimony as much as fiction.

## The story

Amritsar, 1947\. The Guru Ram Das Serai near the Golden Temple has become a temporary refuge for Hindu and Sikh families fleeing the communal terror and bloodbath of Partition. Among the legions of volunteers providing succour to the new arrivals is Satnam Singh, the leader of the local Unity Council. He is struck by two of the refugees: an erudite-looking old man with a long flowing beard, extraordinarily calm amid the catastrophe, and his companion, a resolute young woman whose eyes seem haunted by the tragedies they have witnessed. Satnam shelters them in his own home.

Around him, the city slides into revenge. His own friends abandon their beliefs to join the relentless cycle of revenge and retribution, determined to purge Amritsar of its large Muslim population. Even as he protects his two guests, Satnam's faith in placing humanity before religion is severely tested, and he oscillates between steadfastness and deep despair as the violence closes in.

## Themes

The novel's real subject is the machinery of communal violence: how neighbours who had shared a city's fabric for generations are converted, step by step, into killers, and how hard it is for one decent man to stand against that conversion. Against the machinery Nanak Singh sets a stubborn humanism. Satnam Singh is no saint; he despairs, he wavers, he suffers, but he refuses the central lie of the riot, that a person's worth is decided by their religion.

The fire of the title works on two levels: the literal burning of Amritsar's quarters, and the game played with other people's lives by those who light the flames and feed on religious emotion. Yet the book is not despairing. Its publisher describes it as a story shot through with hope, of the unexpected heroes who rise from the catastrophe.

## The author

Nanak Singh (1897–1971) is widely regarded as the father of the Punjabi novel. Born Hans Raj in Chak Hamid in Jhelum district, he had little formal education beyond the fourth grade, yet wrote fifty-nine books, thirty-eight of them novels, alongside plays, short stories, poems, essays and translations. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1962 for Ik Mian Do Talwaran. His novel Pavitra Paapi was made into a film in 1968, and Chitta Lahu was translated into Russian. Agg Di Khed shows his lifelong method at its strongest: real places, ordinary people, and the moral pressure of history applied to both.

## A Game of Fire: the English translation

The novel waited more than seventy-five years for English. On 16 January 2024, Harper Perennial published A Game of Fire, translated by Navdeep Suri, the author's grandson, a former diplomat who has served as India's ambassador to Egypt and the UAE and who has spent years preserving his grandfather's legacy. His translation of Khoon De Sohile, as Hymns in Blood, had appeared in 2022, so English readers can now follow the two-part Partition story in order, in English for the very first time.

The translation was warmly praised. Shashi Tharoor called the novel a must-read, written with the insight of an intellectual and the sensibility of a devout pluralist, and a warning for an age of religious polarisation. Navtej Sarna called it a chilling reminder of the depravity of communal frenzy, and, in the same breath, a narrative of hope, of how essential goodness, humanity and love can overcome brutal barbarism. Suri himself said that translating the book made him aware of the large and thriving Punjabi Muslim community once woven into every part of Amritsar's fabric, and of his grandfather's intellectual honesty and courage in describing the cycle of violence without flinching.

## Why does Agg Di Khed still matter?

Because it is one of the very few novels of Partition written by a Punjabi who watched his own city burn, and published while the wounds were still open. Histories of 1947 count trains and casualties; Agg Di Khed counts neighbours. Its central question, whether a person can put humanity before religion when everyone around him is choosing the opposite, has not dated, and its message, as its publisher notes, is as relevant today as it was when it was first published in 1948\. The English translation has finally carried it beyond the Punjabi readers who kept it alive for three quarters of a century.
