## About the book

Khooni Vaisakhi, Bloody Vaisakhi, is a long Punjabi poem by Nanak Singh, published in May 1920 and banned soon after by the British government in India. It is an eyewitness account of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar on 13 April 1919, written by a young man who was inside the Bagh that day, survived, and turned what he had seen into verse. Few Punjabi books carry this double weight: a work of literature and a historical document at the same time.

The poem narrates the political events in the run up to the massacre and its immediate aftermath. Its publisher, HarperCollins India, calls it a scathing critique of the British Raj, a poignant piece of protest literature and a historical artefact, and notes that it shows how Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims came together to stand up to colonisation and oppression. That breadth is part of its power: it is not only about one afternoon in Amritsar, but about the Punjab that walked into the Bagh together.

## What happened at Jallianwala Bagh?

On 13 April 1919, the festival of Vaisakhi, a large unarmed gathering met at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar to protest against the Rowlatt Act. British troops opened fire on the crowd, killing hundreds. Nanak Singh, then twenty two years old, was present with two friends who were killed in the massacre. He fainted, and his unconscious body was piled up among the corpses, which is why he lived to write the poem. The massacre became a turning point in India's independence movement, and Khooni Vaisakhi is the Punjabi poem written from inside it.

## Banned, lost and rediscovered

The British banned the poem soon after its publication in May 1920, concerned by a provocative book that mocked colonial rule and told Punjabis, in their own language, what had been done in Amritsar. For decades the poem effectively disappeared from public life. HarperCollins records that after sixty long years it was rediscovered, and in 2019, for the centenary of the massacre, it was published in English for the first time, translated by the author's grandson Navdeep Suri. The bilingual edition prints the poem in translation and in the original, with essays by Navdeep Suri, the Punjabi literature scholar H. S. Bhatia and the BBC correspondent Justin Rowlatt, whose great grandfather Sir Sydney Rowlatt drafted the Rowlatt Act the crowd had gathered to protest.

## Themes: witness, protest and a shared Punjab

The poem's first theme is witness. Nanak Singh does not write as a historian at a distance: he writes as a survivor, and the verse carries the run up, the firing and the aftermath as lived experience. Its second theme is protest. Written within a year of the massacre, it judges the Raj while the wounds were open, which is exactly why it was banned. Its third theme is unity: the gathering it mourns, and the Punjab it addresses, are Sikh, Hindu and Muslim together, and the poem treats that shared stand against oppression as the meaning of the day, not a detail of it.

## The author

Nanak Singh was born as Hans Raj on 4 July 1897 at Chak Hamid in Jhelum district, now in Pakistan, into a poor Punjabi Hindu family, and took the name Nanak Singh after adopting Sikhism. He had little formal education. His first book, Satguru Mehma, hymns in praise of the Sikh Gurus, appeared in 1918 and was his first commercial success. After Jallianwala Bagh he joined the Akali movement and edited Akali papers, was charged with unlawful political activities and sent to Borstal Jail in Lahore, and saw his second poetry collection, Zakhmi Dil, banned within two weeks of publication in January 1923\. He went on to write more than fifty books and is regarded as the father of the Punjabi novel: Chitta Lahu and Pavitra Papi are in this Kosh, and Ik Mian Do Talwaran won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1962\. He died on 28 December 1971 in Amritsar, aged 74, and India issued a postal stamp in his honour in 1998.

## Why does Khooni Vaisakhi still matter?

Because it is testimony that a government tried to erase and failed. The ban kept the poem from its first readers, but it also marked it: a century later, universities and publishers return to Khooni Vaisakhi when they teach the massacre, because no official report speaks in the voice of a twenty two year old who lay among the dead and then wrote. For Punjabi readers it is also a beginning: the poem stands at the head of Nanak Singh's long career, proof that modern Punjabi literature was shaped, from its first generation, by a writer who had seen history at its worst and answered it in verse.
