## About the play

Mittar Pyara (Beloved Friend) is a full length Punjabi play by Sant Singh Sekhon (1908 to 1997), listed among his plays with the year 1971\. In 1972 it won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Punjabi, in the play category, and it is the work for which Sekhon the playwright is best known, the honour his own Kosh entry leads with. Sekhon wrote across almost every form Punjabi has: one act plays from 1941, full length plays, short stories, the novel Lahu Mitti, and the criticism that made him a founder of modern Punjabi literary criticism. Mittar Pyara is where his two lifelong commitments, his Marxism and his deep reading of Sikh history, meet on one stage.

The subject is startling, and meant to be. Where Sekhon's historical plays, Waris, Banda Bahadur and Vada Ghallughara, restage episodes of Sikh history, Mittar Pyara is classed among his contemporary plays. It brings Lenin to Punjab, in imagination, and asks what the Russian revolutionary and the Punjabi revolutionaries of the Ghadar movement had to say to each other.

## What is Mittar Pyara about?

Mittar Pyara is about a group of Sikhs and other Indians who develop a friendship with Lenin as part of their effort to liberate India from British rule. At its centre stand the Ghadar leaders Bhai Santokh Singh and Bhai Rattan Singh. They take part in the deliberations of the second Comintern, the Communist International, and then interact with the beloved friend of the title. The beloved friend is Lenin himself, imagined as the friend of colonised people everywhere, and of Punjabi patriots in particular.

The premise is an imagined one, and the play does not hide it. Reviewing the English translations of Sekhon's plays, The Tribune noted that he fulfilled in Mittar Piara his desire to write a play on whatever contacts there might have been between Lenin and Indian patriots. The conditional matters. Where the historical record is thin or silent, the stage can stage the meeting anyway, and test what each side would have needed from the other: the Ghadar men, organisation, theory and a world audience for India's case; Lenin's movement, proof that its revolution spoke to peasants and soldiers far beyond Europe.

## Faith and revolution on one stage

The play's deepest idea is in its casting. Tejwant Singh Gill, who translated Sekhon's plays into English, describes Bhai Santokh Singh and Bhai Rattan Singh as men infused with the self-sacrificing spirit of Gurbani who have also come to grasp the theory and practise of Marxism. That pairing, Sikh devotion and communist discipline in the same person, is Sekhon's signature. He grew up in a Singh Sabha household, was shaped by the Progressive Writers' Movement, believed in Marxism all his life, and never saw the two inheritances as enemies. In Mittar Pyara, sacrifice for the people is spoken in both languages at once, and the play asks whether they are, at root, the same duty.

Even the title works in two registers. To a Punjabi ear, Mittar Pyara, the beloved friend, echoes the much loved composition Mittar Pyare Nu, in which word is sent to the beloved friend telling him of the singer's condition. Sekhon takes that intimate address, a friend told the truth about suffering, and gives it a political addressee, without stripping it of devotion. Lenin is approached the way the composition approaches its friend: not as a distant power, but as the one who must be told how things stand.

## The author

Sant Singh Sekhon was born in 1908 in Lyallpur, in British Punjab, now in Pakistan, and grew up in his father's village, Dakha, near Ludhiana. He took master's degrees in both Economics and English, taught English, and chose to write in Punjabi. His first success came early, with the one act plays of Chhe Ghar (Six Homes, 1941). A believer in Marxism, he contested elections four times, thrice for the Punjab legislature and once for Parliament, and never won, a record his biographers record alongside the books rather than instead of them. He wrote ten full length plays and four collections of one act plays, five short story collections, two novels and five books of literary criticism, among them Sahityarth, his theory of literature, and a pioneering history of the Punjabi language.

Later honours followed the award Mittar Pyara had already won: the Padma Shri in 1987, and a professorship of eminence at Punjabi University, Patiala, where a chair was set up in his name after his death in 1997\. His novel Lahu Mitti (Blood and Earth, 1949 in the usual listing) also has an entry in this Kosh. Read together, the novel and the play show the two poles of his work: the Punjab village, rendered with an economist's eye, and the world stage, on which Punjab claims its seat.

## Reception and legacy

The Sahitya Akademi Award of 1972 placed Mittar Pyara in the national record at a time when Punjabi drama rarely travelled beyond Punjab. It has since reached English readers through Seven Plays on Sikh History, compiled and translated by Tejwant Singh Gill and published by the Sahitya Akademi, where Gill's introduction reads the play as the meeting point of Gurbani's spirit of sacrifice and Marxist practice.

Mittar Pyara remains one of the most unusual plays in Punjabi. It is not village realism, and it is not a pageant of Sikh history, though its author wrote both. It is a play of ideas that insists Punjab's freedom struggle belonged to a world conversation, and that a revolutionary in Moscow could be addressed, in Punjabi, as a beloved friend. Few Punjabi plays have dared a larger stage, and none has used it to make a smaller, warmer claim: that liberation begins as friendship.
