## About the book

Parsa, published in 1991, is the last great novel of Gurdial Singh's career, and in the judgment of many critics, his richest. Where his early masterpieces Marhi Da Diva (1964) and Adh Chanani Raat (1972) had mapped the material world of Malwa's dispossessed with unsparing realism, Parsa turns inward. Its subject is not poverty or labour but memory itself: the whole tangled inheritance of Punjabi culture, carried inside a single ageing man.

The novel arrived at a dark moment. Punjab in the early 1990s was living through the final years of militancy, and the book's meditation on a composite, plural Punjabi culture, Hindu, Sikh, Sufi, folk, reads as a deliberate counter-statement to the forces trying to tear that culture apart. Critics have called it "an important cultural text, a real triumph of Gurdial Singh's life-long commitment to the art of fiction."

Parsa's 1991 arrival placed it in direct conversation with its moment. Punjab's militancy years had made "composite culture" sound like nostalgia; the novel insists it is a program, a way of living that the old man at its centre embodies without theorizing. Gurdial Singh, who had spent his career documenting the material miseries of Malwa, here documented its spiritual resources: the Gurbani verse remembered at a funeral, the Sufi saying quoted in a quarrel, the Mahabharata story told at bedtime. The book argues, quietly but unmistakably, that these resources are what make survival possible.
\## Plot & themes

The novel's centre is Parsa, an old Jat-Brahmin in a Malwa village, and the book's great formal gamble is to make his consciousness the main arena of the action. Social tensions that other novels would stage as external conflict, caste against caste, tradition against revolution, faith against doubt, are fought out inside one mind.

Around him the world presses in. His younger son Basanta is drawn to the Naxalite movement and is killed in a police encounter, the novel's starkest image of a generation choosing the gun over the plough, and paying for it. The narrative weaves together ancient myth from the Mahabharata and the Puranas, folk tale, the discourses of Gurbani and Sufism, and the contemporary language of revolutionary movements. Scholars describe this intertextuality as the book's engine: Parsa does not resolve the contradictions of Punjabi culture by exclusion but by assimilation, holding opposites together in a single capacious awareness.

The result is a novel about wholeness, an attempt, rare in modern fiction, to reclaim the diverse strands of a cultural memory within one work.

The intertextual method deserves a closer look, because it is the novel's real plot. Parsa's mind is a palimpsest: a line of Gurbani surfaces during a land dispute; a Puranic myth reframes a family quarrel; a Naxalite slogan echoes against a grandfather's proverb. Nothing is quoted decoratively, each borrowing does work, testing the present against the past. Basanta's fate is the novel's warning about what happens when the young mistake one strand of this inheritance (revolution) for the whole cloth. His death in the police encounter is rendered without romance: the waste, not the glory, is the point.
\## The author

Gurdial Singh (1933–2016) was born in Jaitu in the Malwa region and spent years as a village schoolteacher before and alongside his writing life. Marhi Da Diva (1964) made him famous; Adh Chanani Raat (1972) won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975; the honours that followed included the Padma Shri (1998) and the Jnanpith Award (1999, shared with Nirmal Verma), India's highest literary honour.

Parsa belongs to his late phase, written when he had nothing left to prove and could attempt the most difficult thing of all: a novel whose drama is almost entirely interior, and whose subject is a civilization's memory of itself.

The late Gurdial Singh is a study in artistic courage. Most writers repeat their triumphs; he abandoned his. The spare realism of Marhi Da Diva could have sustained a dozen sequels, but Parsa attempts something almost opposite, density instead of spareness, inwardness instead of observation, synthesis instead of exposure. That a writer in his late fifties chose the hardest formal challenge of his career, rather than coasting, tells you what kind of artist he was.
\## Reception & legacy

Parsa was widely acclaimed as a culminating achievement, the book in which Gurdial Singh's lifelong themes found their most capacious form. It was translated into English by the National Book Trust, and it remains a touchstone in critical writing on Punjabi fiction, on the literature of the Punjab crisis years, and on the idea of a composite Punjabi culture.

For readers, it is the most demanding of his novels and, many would say, the most rewarding: less a story than a reckoning.

In the criticism of the Punjab crisis years, Parsa acquired a special status: the novel intellectuals cited when they wanted to say what was being defended. Its vision of a plural, absorptive Punjabi culture, Hindu and Sikh and Sufi at once, became a touchstone in debates about identity that continue today. For general readers, it remains the Gurdial Singh to graduate to: demanding, rewarding, and unlike anything else in Punjabi fiction.
\## Read it if...

You have read Marhi Da Diva and Adh Chanani Raat and want the third panel of the triptych, the inward turn. Or if you want to understand what Punjabi intellectuals meant when, in Punjab's darkest decade, they insisted that the culture being fought over was larger and older than any of the factions claiming it.

You are interested in how novels think, not just what they show, but how a consciousness processes a civilization. Parsa is Punjabi fiction's great novel of interiority, and it asks for, and repays, slow reading.
