## About the book

Rasidi Ticket (The Revenue Stamp), published in 1976, is Amrita Pritam's autobiography, the book in which the most famous woman in Punjabi literature finally told her own story in her own voice. She was fifty-seven when it appeared, with four decades of writing behind her and the major honours of Indian literature already accumulating. What she produced was not a tidy chronological memoir but something stranger and more honest: a life told in flashes, letters, poems and remembered conversations, with the candour that had always been her signature.

The title is pure Pritam. A rasidi ticket is a revenue stamp, the small adhesive stamp affixed to official documents to make them legal, valid, real. By naming her life's story after it, she suggests both authentication (this really happened; here is the stamp to prove it) and a sly irony (a woman's unruly life, rubber-stamped like a government form). The English translation keeps the title: The Revenue Stamp, translated by Krishna Gorowara.

The book covers the whole arc: the Gujranwala childhood and the mother lost at eleven; the marriage at sixteen to Pritam Singh; the Lahore years and the birth of a literary career; the cataclysm of Partition in 1947 and the flight to Delhi; the unrequited, lifelong love for the poet Sahir Ludhianvi; and the companionship with the artist Imroz that became the great relationship of her later life. It is also, throughout, a record of a writing life, how the poems got written, what they cost, and what they were for.

## Themes and craft

The book's central theme is a woman's right to her own story. Pritam had lived much of her adult life in public, her loves were newspaper gossip, her opinions were controversial, and Rasidi Ticket is her reclamation of the narrative. She writes about Sahir with a frankness that startled 1976: not as scandal but as fact, the central emotional event of her life, described without apology and without self-pity. The famous detail, that she would write his name hundreds of times, that a single phone call from him could undo her, is given plainly, as data about a heart.

A second theme is Partition as personal history. Pritam is one of the few major writers who lived the 1947 migration as an adult and wrote about it immediately and for the rest of her life. The memoir's Partition passages, Lahore abandoned, the train journeys, Delhi rebuilt from nothing, are among the most vivid first-person accounts of that year in Indian literature. They connect directly to her two great Partition works, the elegy Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu and the novel Pinjar (1950).

The third thread is the making of a writer. Pritam is unusually generous about process: the early imitations, the discovery of her own voice, the role of the Progressive Writers' Movement, the discipline of producing some hundred books across six decades. For aspiring writers, these passages are the book's quiet treasure.

Craft-wise, Rasidi Ticket breaks the autobiographical mould. It is fragmentary, lyrical, non-linear, closer to a prose poem in places than to a memoir. Letters appear verbatim; poems interrupt the narrative; time folds. This was deliberate: Pritam distrusted the official version of anything, including her own life, and the form enacts that distrust. The result feels startlingly modern, closer to today's autofiction than to the memoirs of her contemporaries.

## The author

Amrita Pritam (1919–2005) needs little introduction to readers of Punjabi literature, but Rasidi Ticket is where she introduces herself. Born Amrita Kaur in Gujranwala (now Pakistan), married at sixteen, a published poet at seventeen with Amrit Lehran (1936), she became the defining woman writer of twentieth-century Punjabi, novelist of Pinjar, author of the Partition elegy, winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 for Sunehade (the first woman to receive it for Punjabi), and winner of the Jnanpith in 1982 for Kagaz te Canvas (the first woman to receive it at all).

She would write two more autobiographical books after this one, Kala Gulab (Black Rose) and Shadows of Words, but Rasidi Ticket remains the essential self-portrait: the one written at the height of her powers, before age softened the edges. Her later honours, the Padma Shri (1969), the Padma Vibhushan (2004), the Rajya Sabha nomination (1986), the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship (2004), all came to a woman this book had already fully revealed.

## Reception and legacy

Rasidi Ticket was a sensation on publication and has remained continuously in print ever since, in Punjabi, in Hindi and other Indian translations, and in Krishna Gorowara's English rendering. Readers who had followed Pritam's work for decades finally got the story behind the poems; younger readers got a model of how to live a literary life without permission.

Critics have come to regard it as a landmark of Indian life-writing, one of the first autobiographies by an Indian woman to treat love, desire and artistic ambition with complete frankness. Its fragmentary, lyrical form has been influential, and its honesty set a standard that later memoirists are still measured against. In Punjabi letters, it fixed Pritam's public image for good: not the respectable grande dame, but the brave, desiring, ungovernable woman she actually was.

The book also became a primary source for everything written about Pritam since, biographers, filmmakers and scholars all start here. To understand twentieth-century Punjabi literature's most famous life, there is no substitute for hearing it from the woman herself, in the voice that made her famous.

## Read it if

Read it if Amrita Pritam's poems or Pinjar ever moved you and you want the life behind them. Read it if you are interested in women's autobiography, Partition memoir, or the literary history of twentieth-century India, it is a primary document of all three. And read it if you want to see what complete honesty looks like in prose: few memoirs, in any language, are this brave.
