## About the book

Sundri, published in 1898, is the book with which the modern Punjabi novel begins. Before it, Punjabi prose had the qissa, the janamsakhi, and the tract; after it, Punjabi had the novel, imported from Europe, naturalized by Bhai Vir Singh, and put to work for the Sikh revival.

Vir Singh wrote it as a young man of twenty-six, already a leading figure of the Singh Sabha movement, at a moment when Sikh identity felt besieged, by colonial modernity, by Christian missionary activity, by the slow erosion of tradition. His answer was not argument but story: historical romances that would recreate the heroic eighteenth century, the age of Sikh struggle and martyrdom, and set before his readers models of courage, fortitude, and human dignity.

Consider the audacity: in 1898, no Punjabi novel existed, and a twenty-six-year-old decided to invent one, not as an experiment for the elite, but as a popular book for ordinary readers, priced and distributed through the Khalsa Tract Society's network to reach villages. Vir Singh understood something his contemporaries didn't: that a community's imagination is shaped less by sermons than by stories. Sundri was infrastructure disguised as entertainment.

The Tract Society's distribution network deserves one more emphasis, because it explains the book's astonishing reach. These were not bookshop books; they were carried by preachers and volunteers, sold for annas at melas and gurdwaras, read aloud in village gatherings to audiences many of whom could not read. Sundri was among the first Punjabi books to be experienced as a communal event, heard before it was read, discussed before it was shelved. That oral afterlife is why its phrases entered the language.
\## Plot & themes

The novel's heroine is Sundri, "the beautiful woman", a Sikh maiden of the eighteenth century whose virtue is tested by abduction and adversity, and who endures through faith, courage, and an unbreakable sense of honour. Around her, Vir Singh builds the world of the Khalsa in its heroic age: the forests and the chase, the Mughal persecution, the code of the warrior-saint.

The plot is romance in the old sense, adventure, peril, devotion, but its purpose is reformist. Every episode is designed to instruct: this is how a Sikh woman bears herself; this is what the faith asks and what it gives. The novel's didacticism, which later critics sometimes find heavy, was exactly its power for its first readers. It gave a colonized people an image of themselves as heroic rather than humiliated.

The themes, Sikh sacrifice, martyrdom, resilience, and survival, would run through all of Vir Singh's early fiction: Bijay Singh (1899), Satwant Kaur (1900), and Baba Naudh Singh.

The eighteenth-century setting was a deliberate choice with a contemporary target. Vir Singh's readers lived under the Raj, in a Punjab where Sikh political power was a memory and missionary schools were converting the young. By restaging the age of persecution, when the Khalsa was hunted and survived, he was telling his readers: you come from people who endured worse than this. The novel's didacticism, its insistence on models, is the whole point; subtlety would have been a betrayal of its mission. Every trial Sundri survives is an argument that the reader can survive theirs.

A final observation on the novel's gender politics, which modern readers rightly interrogate. Sundri is, by design, an ideal rather than a person, virtue without interiority, courage without doubt. Feminist critics have noted the cost of that design: the heroine as lesson rather than life. But the book's historical achievement stands apart from its limitations. In 1898, giving Punjab a woman at the moral centre of its founding novel, when the tradition offered none, was itself a radical act, whatever we make of how she was drawn.
\## The author

Bhai Vir Singh (1872–1957) was the poet, scholar, and theologian of the Sikh revival, canonized as the father of modern Punjabi literature. Born in Amritsar, he founded the Khalsa Tract Society and edited its journal Nirguniara, the vehicle for his novels, his epic Rana Surat Singh, and his lives of the Gurus. His lyric poetry, Dil Tarang (1920), Tarel Tupke (1921), and the later collections, created modern Punjabi poetry. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955 and the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and was among the founders of Punjab & Sind Bank.

The Tract Society deserves emphasis as a literary institution. Through Nirguniara and its cheap publications, Vir Singh created something like a parallel publishing industry for Punjabi, one that bypassed both the colonial establishment and the traditional custodians of letters. Sundri travelled through this network the way later bestsellers would travel through railways stations: it went where the readers were. The modern Punjabi book trade, in a real sense, begins here.
\## Reception & legacy

Sundri made Vir Singh famous and made the Punjabi novel possible. It has never been out of print in the more than 125 years since, and its heroine became the archetype of Sikh womanhood for generations, the name itself a byword for virtuous courage. Every subsequent Punjabi novelist, from Nanak Singh onward, writes in the genre Vir Singh invented with this book.

The heroine's afterlife is extraordinary. "Sundri" became a given name for Sikh girls, the character a template invoked in sermons, schoolbooks, and domestic instruction for a century. Few fictional characters in any Indian language have done comparable cultural work. The novel proved, permanently, that Punjabi prose could carry a sustained narrative, and every novelist since has worked in the room Vir Singh built.
\## Read it if...

You want to read the first Punjabi novel, and to understand how literature rebuilt a community's self-image. Read it with Bijay Singh and Satwant Kaur as the trilogy Vir Singh intended.

You are interested in how books change history, not by describing the world but by giving people a better story about themselves. Sundri is Exhibit A.
