## About the book

Sunehade (Messages), published in 1955, is the long poem that made Amrita Pritam a national figure. In 1956 it won the Sahitya Akademi Award, making her the first woman ever to receive the award for a work in Punjabi, and one of the first women to receive it in any language. The book is a single sustained lyric utterance: a woman speaking, across distance and silence, to the man she loves and cannot have.

The title is a diminutive, sunehade are 'little messages', notes passed in secret, words too tender or too dangerous to say aloud. The poem is exactly that: an intimate communication smuggled past the world's prohibitions. It is often read as addressed to Pritam's unrequited love for the poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, the defining emotional fact of her life, though the poem never names him, and its power does not depend on the identification.

Sunehade stands at the centre of Pritam's poetic career: behind it lie the romantic collections of the 1930s and 40s, beginning with Amrit Lehran (1936); ahead lie the Partition elegies, the novels, and the late masterpieces like Kagaz te Canvas (1981). It is the hinge on which her reputation turned from a Punjabi poet into an Indian one.

## Themes and craft

Love, specifically, love that cannot be consummated or even fully declared, is the poem's entire subject. But Sunehade is not a complaint; it is an exploration. Pritam anatomises what it means to love across an unbridgeable gap: the way desire sharpens perception, the way absence becomes a kind of presence, the way the beloved, never possessed, becomes perfect and therefore permanently lost. There is pain here, but also a strange exaltation, the poem suggests that unfulfilled love, precisely because it is never tested by reality, retains a purity that fulfilled love cannot.

Running beneath the love poem is a quiet feminism. In the Punjab of the 1950s, for a woman, a married woman, a mother, to publish a book-length declaration of extramarital longing was an act of extraordinary courage. Pritam does not apologise, does not moralise, does not ask permission. She simply states what she feels, in language of such beauty that objection feels beside the point. Generations of women readers have recognised in Sunehade the first time their own inner lives were given literary form in Punjabi.

The poem also carries the shadow of Partition, though it never mentions it directly. Written less than a decade after 1947, in the Delhi where Pritam had rebuilt her life as a refugee, Sunehade's themes of separation, exile and messages that may never arrive resonate with a larger history of sundered connections. The personal and the historical illuminate each other without either being reduced to the other.

Craft-wise, the poem is Pritam at her most musical. The lines are short, the diction plain, the images drawn from everyday Punjabi life, and yet the cumulative effect is incantatory, almost liturgical. She builds the long poem not through argument but through accretion: image upon image, message upon message, until the reader is inside the feeling rather than observing it. It is a masterclass in how simplicity, sustained, becomes grandeur.

## The author

Amrita Pritam (1919–2005) was already a well-known poet when Sunehade appeared, with some twenty books behind her since her debut Amrit Lehran in 1936\. Born in Gujranwala, married at sixteen, migrated from Lahore to Delhi in the Partition of 1947, she had lived the material of the poem: the early marriage, the literary fame, the hopeless love for Sahir Ludhianvi that she never concealed and never apologised for.

The Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 changed her status permanently, from a regional poet to a national figure, the first woman to break that particular barrier. What followed was the most productive career in Punjabi letters: the novel Pinjar (1950) had already appeared; the autobiography Rasidi Ticket (1976) and the Jnanpith-winning Kagaz te Canvas (1981) were ahead. She would receive the Padma Shri (1969), the Padma Vibhushan (2004), a Rajya Sabha nomination (1986) and the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship (2004), and write some hundred books before her death in Delhi in 2005.

## Reception and legacy

The 1956 Sahitya Akademi Award made Sunehade famous overnight, and it has remained Pritam's most celebrated poem, the work even casual readers associate with her name, alongside the Partition elegy Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu. Its award citation recognised what readers had felt: that here was a new kind of love poetry in Indian literature, at once deeply personal and universally legible.

The poem's influence has been profound and various. It gave Punjabi poetry permission to speak about women's desire directly, a permission later poets, men and women, would use freely. It became a touchstone for feminist readings of Pritam, and for the long cultural conversation about her relationship with Sahir, which the poem both feeds and transcends. And it fixed the template for the Pritam lyric: plain words, large feelings, no apology.

Today Sunehade is taught, anthologised, set to music and quoted, often by people who have never read the whole poem. But the whole poem repays reading: it is that rare thing, a book-length love letter that is also a work of art, and the founding document of the confessional voice in Punjabi poetry.

## Read it if

Read it if you want to understand why Amrita Pritam matters, this is the poem that made her immortal. Read it if you love love poetry that doesn't flinch: Rumi, Neruda, and then this. And read it if you are interested in the moment Punjabi literature found a woman's voice and stopped apologising for it.
