## About the book

Teeli Da Nishaan, which means Mark of the Nose Pin, is a Punjabi novel by Dalip Kaur Tiwana, published in 1971\. It stands fourth in the standard lists of her novels, after Agni Prikhya (The Ordeal of Fire), Eho Hamara Jeevna and Vat Hamari (Our Path, 1970), and it appeared in the same year that Eho Hamara Jeevna brought her the Sahitya Akademi Award. When the Press Trust of India reported her death in 2020, Teeli Da Nishaan was one of the two books it named her as known for, alongside Sooraj Te Samandar (Sun and Ocean, 1972).

The title names a small thing with a large meaning. A teeli is the pin a bride wears in her nose, a sign of marriage and of a young wife's pride, and the novel asks what happens when a woman refuses to hand that sign back on society's orders.

## What is Teeli Da Nishaan about?

The novel tells of a formidable young Punjabi woman who is married to a soldier, and whose husband is killed not long after the wedding. Widowhood, as her society defines it, demands that she put away the colours of a bride. She refuses. In the account given in the foreword to the English translation, she breaks her colourful matrimonial glass bangles, and yet she continues to wear her diamond nose ring, keeping the pride of a youthful bride in open defiance of the people around her.

The defiance does not hold forever. The same foreword records that in the end she succumbs to the prejudices of her people and disappears. Tiwana gives her heroine no simple victory, and that refusal of an easy ending is characteristic of her work: the Sikh Encyclopedia's account of her fiction names tragedy and irony as its main elements, and the complex inner duality of the female psyche as her chief theme.

## Themes: a nose pin against a whole society

The book's central conflict is between a woman's inner life and the role written for her. The encyclopedia account of Tiwana's writing says she wrote mostly about the mindscape of downtrodden women and their secondary position in society, and notes that even her educated, economically independent women are often unable to assert themselves as equals, for fear of what is at stake. The young widow of Teeli Da Nishaan is the rural counterpart of those women: her assertion is not an argument but an ornament she will not take off.

The English volume pairs the novel with Twilight, a companion piece about a married woman who all her life plays with the idea of romance inside a marriage she cannot break. Read together, the foreword says, the two pieces present the picture fully and are most typical of Tiwana's output: one woman bound by a marriage that has ended, one by a marriage that continues.

## The author

Dalip Kaur Tiwana (4 May 1935 to 31 January 2020) was born at Rabbon in Ludhiana district, took her MA and PhD in Punjabi literature, and taught at Punjabi University, Patiala, where she became professor of Punjabi and dean of the faculty of languages. She won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971 for Eho Hamara Jeevna, the Saraswati Samman in 2001 for Katha Kaho Urvashi, and the Padma Shri in 2004, an honour she returned in 2015 in protest against rising intolerance. Teeli Da Nishaan belongs to the remarkable run of novels with which she began, the books of the years around 1970 that made her, while still in her thirties, one of the leading novelists in Punjabi.

## Reception and legacy

In English the novel travels as Mark of the Nose Ring, published by the National Book Trust, Delhi, in a single volume with Twilight, in translations by Narinder Kaur and Jai Ratan. The volume's foreword calls Tiwana the Jane Austen of Punjabi letters, weaving the pride and prejudices of Punjabi society, and gives her the same status in Punjabi fiction that Amrita Pritam enjoyed in Punjabi poetry. The foreword also suggests the English title should have been Symbol of the Nose Ring, a small sign of how much weight that one ornament is made to carry.

Teeli Da Nishaan repays reading beside Eho Hamara Jeevna, which is also in this Kosh. The award winning novel shows a woman ground down by the men around her; this one shows a woman pushing back against the whole weight of custom, and paying for it. Between the two books, much of Tiwana's lifelong subject is already present in full.
