He is the first person of Indian origin to lead the World Bank. ## A Saini family from Jalandhar Ajaypal Singh Banga was born on 10 November 1959 in Khadki, near Pune, where his father, an Indian Army officer, was posted. The family, Punjabi Sikhs of the Saini community, comes originally from Jalandhar in Punjab. His father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, rose to lieutenant-general in the Indian Army, and his elder brother M. S. Banga also became a prominent businessman. Army postings moved the family around India, and Ajay was schooled at St. Edward's School in Shimla and at Hyderabad Public School. He read economics at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and completed his management studies, an MBA equivalent programme, at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. ## Nestlé, PepsiCo and Citigroup Banga began work in 1981 as a management trainee at Nestlé India and stayed 13 years, moving through sales, marketing and general management. His training at Citi briefly included work as a debt collector, an episode he has recalled as an early lesson in how money and obligation look from the ground up. He then joined PepsiCo, where he helped launch its international fast food chains, Pizza Hut and KFC, in a newly liberalising India. In 1996 he moved to Citigroup, and over 13 years there he ran consumer businesses across the world, led the bank's microfinance push, and by 2008 was chief executive of its Asia-Pacific business. The thread through these years, colleagues have noted, was an interest in bringing financial services to people who had never had them. ## The Mastercard decade Banga joined Mastercard as chief operating officer and became president and chief executive on 1 July 2010\. Over the next decade Mastercard's revenues roughly tripled and its market value rose from under 30 billion dollars to more than 360 billion dollars, as card payments spread through economies that had run on cash. He set the company a goal of bringing hundreds of millions of unbanked people into the digital economy, and in 2020 launched the Priceless Planet Coalition, a group of companies funding the planting of 100 million trees. He stepped down as chief executive at the end of 2020, served as executive chairman through 2021, then became vice chairman of the investment firm General Atlantic and chairman of Exor, the Agnelli family holding company. He also chaired the International Chamber of Commerce and the US-India Business Council. India had honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2016, and he had become a United States citizen in 2007. ## Why was Ajay Banga chosen to lead the World Bank? In February 2023 President Joe Biden nominated Banga to lead the World Bank Group, pointing to his three decades in business, his work on financial inclusion and his experience of development from the private sector side. The nomination drew some criticism from activists who questioned a Wall Street background for an anti-poverty institution, but it won broad support from member countries. The Bank's board confirmed him on 3 May 2023 as its 14th president, the first person of Indian origin, and the first Sikh, to hold the post. ## The World Bank presidency Banga began his five year term on 2 June 2023, succeeding David Malpass. He has argued that the Bank must keep its founding focus on poverty while taking on the problems that now drive it: climate change, pandemics, food insecurity and fragile states. At the G20 summit in New Delhi in 2023 he backed reforms to make multilateral development banks lend more and faster, and he has pushed the Bank to work more closely with private investors. Time magazine named him to its Time100 list of the most influential people in 2024, and to its Time100 Climate list. In 2023 the Carnegie Corporation of New York named him among its Great Immigrants honourees, its annual tribute to naturalised citizens who have enriched American life.
