Known as Khiladi Kumar after the 1992 film Khiladi, he has appeared in more than 150 films, moving between action, comedy, romance and social drama over three decades. ## Early life Kumar was born in the Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi into a Punjabi Hindu family. His father, Hari Om Bhatia, came from Amritsar and served as an officer in the Indian Army before leaving the Army to work as an accountant with UNICEF in Delhi. His mother was Aruna Bhatia. Kumar has said he was brought up in an army way, woken at five in the morning and taken jogging by his father, a discipline he still credits for his working life. He grew up in a joint family in Chandni Chowk and has recalled walking with his grandmother to Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib early every morning. When the family moved to Mumbai, they lived in Koliwada, a Punjabi dominated area of the city. He studied at Don Bosco High School in Matunga, where he also learned karate, and briefly at Guru Nanak Khalsa College before dropping out. Martial arts, not acting, was his first plan. After a black belt in taekwondo in India, he spent about five years in Bangkok learning Muay Thai while working as a chef and waiter. After spells working in Kolkata, Dhaka and Delhi, he returned to Mumbai and taught martial arts, and a student's father pointed him towards modelling. He assisted photographer Jayesh Sheth for 18 months, worked as a background dancer, and made a first, tiny screen appearance as a karate instructor in Aaj (1987). His stage name came from Kumar Gaurav's character Akshay in that film. ## How did Akshay Kumar become Khiladi Kumar? His first lead role came in Saugandh (1991), but the breakthrough was the suspense thriller Khiladi (1992), which made him an action star and gave him the name the press still uses. Through the 1990s the Khiladi series grew around him, with films such as Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), alongside hits such as Mohra and Main Khiladi Tu Anari, both in 1994. He was not only an action hero. Yeh Dillagi (1994), a romance opposite Kajol, earned him his first Filmfare nomination for Best Actor, and a supporting role in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) brought another nomination. After a run of failures late in the decade, Sangharsh and Jaanwar, both in 1999, won him critical praise, and Jaanwar was a commercial success that marked his comeback. ## Comedy, romance and a wider range The 2000s remade him. Hera Pheri (2000), Priyadarshan's comedy with Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty, became a commercial success and a turning point, and the same year Dhadkan showed his dramatic side to praise. He won his first Filmfare Award, for Best Villain, for Ajnabee (2001), and a second, for Best Comedian, for Garam Masala (2005). Romance and family drama ran alongside the comedies: Andaaz (2003), Aitraaz (2004) and Namastey London (2007), a romance in which his character proudly defends his Punjabi roots. In 2007 he had four consecutive box office hits, among them Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Welcome, and Singh Is Kinng followed in 2008\. Few Hindi stars of his generation moved as freely between slapstick, romance and action. ## Acclaim, production and later career From 2012 his career entered a more critically praised phase. Rowdy Rathore (2012) and Holiday (2014) were mainstream hits, while OMG: Oh My God! (2012), Special 26 (2013), Baby (2015) and Airlift (2016) drew strong reviews. For the crime thriller Rustom (2016) he won the National Film Award for Best Actor. He also backed films with social subjects through his own production banners, among them Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), on sanitation, and Pad Man (2018), on menstrual health. In 2019 he set box office records with Kesari, Mission Mangal, Housefull 4 and Good Newwz, and Sooryavanshi followed in 2021. Several of his films after Sooryavanshi failed at the box office, with OMG 2 (2023) a major exception. In 2025 he played the lawyer C. Sankaran Nair in Kesari Chapter 2, a courtroom drama about the legal fight that followed the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 in Amritsar, based on the book The Case That Shook the Empire by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat. Reviews of the film singled out the intensity of his performance as the case reaches its climax. ## Honours and public work The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian honour, in 2009\. Forbes placed him on its lists of the world's highest paid celebrities and highest paid actors from 2015 to 2020, and in 2019 and 2020 he was the only Indian on both lists. Off screen he hosted the stunt reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi for four seasons and launched the reality show Dare 2 Dance in 2014\. He owned the Khalsa Warriors team in the World Kabaddi League and set up martial arts training schools focused on women's safety. In 2017 he helped launch Bharat Ke Veer, a platform built with the Home Ministry that lets the public give money directly to the families of soldiers killed in the line of duty. ## Personal life Kumar married the actor and writer Twinkle Khanna, daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, on 17 January 2001\. The couple have a son and a daughter, and Kumar is known as a protective father who keeps his children away from the media so they can have a normal childhood. He often credits Khanna for his success. His citizenship was a public talking point for years. He held Canadian citizenship from 2011 to 2023, and on 15 August 2023 he confirmed that he had regained Indian citizenship and given up the Canadian one. ## Legacy Kumar's legacy is one of range and stamina. He began as a stunt driven action star who performed his own dangerous sequences, then proved himself in comedy and romance, and later in courtroom, war and social dramas, while producing many of his own films.
