Full story4 min read

Alam Lohar (1928 to 3 July 1979) was a Punjabi folk singer from Achh village in Gujrat district, Punjab, who took the music of village festivals and Sufi shrines to radio, records, television and concert stages around the world. Singing with a chimta in his hand, he popularised the Jugni form, gave Waris Shah's Heer dozens of sung lives, and became so closely identified with Punjabi folk song that his son Arif Lohar built a career carrying the same style forward.

## Early life in Achh, Gujrat district

Alam Lohar was born in 1928 in Achh, a village near Lalamusa in Gujrat district, in the Punjab of British India. The village name is also written Aach and Aaj Koch in anniversary reports. He was born into a family of blacksmiths, and Lohar, the word for a blacksmith in Punjabi and Urdu, became the second half of the name the world knows him by. Pakistan's film magazine PakMag gives his full name as Mohammad Alam and his birth date as 1 March 1928.

As a boy he was drawn less to school than to the sung poetry of Punjab. Anniversary accounts say he began performing Sufi kalaam in public at about the age of eight, reading the verses of the Sufi saints at village gatherings, and that he recorded his first album at thirteen. In his own account, told to Radio Pakistan and retold by Youlin Magazine, festival organisers asked his village for a singer when he was fifteen, he was sent to Lahore, and a listener there arranged his first recording session, which the young blacksmith's son at first misunderstood as an order to forge a metal plate.

## The chimta and a theatre of his own

Lohar's trademark was an instrument from his father's trade. The chimta is a long pair of metal tongs, fitted with small rings and jingles, which he played as a percussion instrument, snapping it in rhythm while he sang. No leading singer in Pakistan had performed with one before him, and the clicking chimta, the bright embroidered waistcoat and the wide smile became a single stage picture that audiences recognised before he sang a note.

In the early years of his career he formed his own musical and theatre company, the Alam Lohar Theatre, and toured it through the towns and villages of Punjab, performing at religious and seasonal festivals. The troupe gave him a travelling stage on which folk tales, Sufi poetry and his own songs could be sung in full, night after night, in a different place each evening at the height of his fame.

## What is Jugni, and what did Alam Lohar do with it?

Jugni is an old narrative device in Punjabi folk music: a travelling figure, part observer and part confidante, who arrives somewhere new in each verse and comments on what she finds, with a kernel of truth in every observation. Alam Lohar is credited with creating the modern sung form of Jugni and popularising the term itself, drawing on early Sufi spiritual writing. He began singing Jugni in his earliest performances before Partition, and his LP record titled Jugni, released later in his career, became a gold disc in 1965\. Other singers across Punjab and the diaspora took the form from him, and his son Arif later carried it to a new generation.

The same carrying voice remade the Punjabi vaar, the sung epic or folk tale. He is famous above all for Waris Shah's Heer, which Youlin Magazine reports he recorded in 36 styles and forms, and for Saif-ul-Malook, alongside folk tales such as Mirza Sahiban, Sohni Mahiwal, Sassi Punnu and Shireen Farhad, and songs including Jugni, Dil Wala Dukhra, Waja Mariyan and Bol Mitti Deya Baweya. From the 1950s until his death he dominated folk music in Pakistan, with hundreds of recordings, and he also sang in films, beginning with the Punjabi film Lai Lagg in 1964 and including Azadi ya Mout in 1966, whose patriotic song PakMag calls his most popular Urdu film song.

## Honours and later life

Honours came late and, in the greatest case, after his death. At the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977, Youlin Magazine reports, a singing event brought together performers from Commonwealth countries and Lohar received the Best Performance Award for his Jugni. In Pakistan many called him the Lion of Punjab. The Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance in 1979, the country's highest civil award for the arts; Youlin records that President Zia-ul-Haq made the award posthumously, after the accident that killed him.

## Death and legacy

Alam Lohar died on 3 July 1979 in a road accident near Sham ki Bhattian, when a heavily loaded truck collided with his vehicle. He was buried on the outskirts of Lalamusa, near the village where he was born, and his grave beside the Grand Trunk Road remains a place his listeners visit. His death anniversary is still marked across Pakistan every July, more than four decades on.

His legacy is carried first by his family and then by the form itself. His son Arif Lohar, born in 1966, sings in his father's style, chimta in hand, and with his brothers set up the Alam Lohar Memorial Trust in his father's honour. Every Jugni sung since, in Punjab, in Britain or in Canada, follows a path Alam Lohar cut: a folk figure with something true to say, carried on a voice and a pair of blacksmith's tongs.
