Amarjot Kaur was a Punjabi folk singer who became the permanent duet partner and second wife of Amar Singh Chamkila, the most in-demand live performer in 1980s Punjab. Her high voice answered his on records and akhara stages across Punjab and abroad, until both were shot dead in Mehsampur on 8 March 1988.

## A singer before Chamkila

Very little of Amarjot Kaur's early life was documented while she lived, and much of what is repeated about her childhood comes from later retellings rather than records made at the time. What the stronger accounts agree on is the outline of her start as a singer: she sang with the celebrated Punjabi folk singer Kuldeep Manak and featured on one of his albums, at a time when few women held a permanent place in a leading male singer's troupe.

Profiles of the duo also report that she had been married before and left that marriage to pursue singing. In the Punjab of that period, a woman who walked away from a marriage to sing on public stages was making an unusual and difficult choice, and it helps explain the determination contemporaries remembered in her. Beyond this outline, responsible accounts do not fix her birth date or birthplace, and this page does not guess at them.

## How did Amarjot Kaur join Chamkila's band?

Amarjot Kaur joined Chamkila's band after Kuldeep Manak suggested her name when Chamkila was looking for a long-term female vocalist. Chamkila had first recorded duets with Surinder Sonia, and after that partnership ended in 1980 he worked briefly with singers such as Miss Usha Kiran and Amar Noorie, but none of those arrangements lasted. Manak had sung with Amarjot himself and vouched for her, and she became Chamkila's permanent singing partner, providing the female vocals for the duets that made up the majority of the songs he wrote.

The pairing worked because the two voices matched. Chamkila sang high, fast and close to the rhythms of village speech, and Amarjot could hold the same pitch and pace opposite him, answering line for line. Listeners who had first come for his words stayed for the exchange between the two voices, and promoters soon stopped booking Chamkila as a solo attraction: the act audiences wanted was the pair.

## The duet years: records, akharas and 366 shows

Through the early and mid 1980s, Chamkila and Amarjot recorded a run of hugely successful LPs for His Master's Voice, including Jija Lak Minle in 1983, Hikk Utte So Ja Ve and Bhul Gai Main Ghund Kadna in 1985, and Sharbat Vangoon Ghut Bhar Laa in 1987\. Songs such as Pehle Lalkare Naal, Mitra Main Khand Ban Gai and Raat Nun Sulah Safaiyan travelled far beyond the villages they described, and the couple toured Canada, the United States, Dubai and Bahrain for the Punjabi diaspora. They were also booked constantly for weddings and private functions, at a reported fee of 4,000 rupees a performance, an unprecedented amount for a Punjabi act of the time.

The centre of their working life was the akhara, the free open-air concert staged in a village ground. Accompanied by a harmonium and dholak player, with Chamkila on tumbi, they used akharas to test new songs on a live crowd before recording them. Gulzar Singh Shaunki's biography of Chamkila, Awaz Mardi Nahin, found that at the height of their popularity the pair performed 366 shows in 365 days, sometimes two or three in a single day. That pace made Amarjot, alongside Chamkila, one of the most heard female voices in Punjab.

## Devotional songs and a second audience

From 1985 the duo also released three devotional LPs: Baba Tera Nankana, Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di Haan and Naam Jap Le. The songs on them were not written by Chamkila himself, and the profits from the records were reportedly donated to charity. The devotional albums were highly successful in their own right, and they widened the pair's audience: the same singers whose stage songs drew criticism for bold lyrics could now be invited to sing at religious functions, and Amarjot's voice carried much of that repertoire.

That double identity is central to understanding her career. The controversy around the duo's lyrics was real, and both singers received threats during the violent years Punjab was passing through. Yet the surviving recordings show a singer equally at home in a devotional programme and in the quick, teasing exchanges of the duets, and audiences of the time made no sharp separation between the two.

## Marriage to Chamkila

Working together turned into a shared life. Amarjot and Chamkila married in 1983, with one widely used biography profile giving the date as 23 May 1983\. Both had been married before: Chamkila's first wife was Gurmail Kaur, with whom he had two daughters, Amandeep Kaur and Kamaldeep Kaur. Amarjot and Chamkila had a son, Jaiman Chamkila, who later became a singer himself. The marriage joined their names permanently in the public mind, but it is worth remembering that the partnership came first: she was hired as a singer, and the act was already famous before it was also a household.

## What happened in Mehsampur on 8 March 1988?

On 8 March 1988, Amarjot and Chamkila travelled from Ludhiana to Mehsampur, a village in Jalandhar district, where they had been booked to perform at a wedding. The band reached the village at about 2 pm and, after a meal at a village house, drove to the akhara ground set up for the performance. As the couple stepped out of their vehicle, gunmen on motorcycles opened fire. Amarjot and Chamkila were fatally wounded, and two members of their band were also killed.

No arrests were ever made and the killing remains unsolved. Reporting over the years has alleged different hands behind it, and Chamkila's friend and lyricist Swarn Sivia, who investigated the case himself, disputed one of the most repeated theories. Because nothing was ever established in court, this page records only the documented facts: who was killed, where, and that no one was convicted. The couple died at the height of their fame, and the performance they had travelled to give was never sung.

## Legacy and the 2024 film

For decades after 1988, Amarjot's name was usually spoken as the second half of a famous pair, and her own contribution could be treated as a footnote to Chamkila's story. The recordings argue otherwise. The duet form that defined Punjabi popular music in the 1980s needed two voices of equal strength, and hers is on the majority of the songs that built the duo's fame, from the stage hits to the devotional albums that reached a different audience entirely.

Her story reached a new generation through Imtiaz Ali's film Amar Singh Chamkila, released on Netflix on 12 April 2024, in which Parineeti Chopra played Amarjot opposite Diljit Dosanjh as Chamkila, with music by A. R. Rahman. The film treated her as a central figure rather than a supporting one, and it sent many younger listeners back to the original records. Earlier screen works had already kept the story alive, including the 2018 film Mehsampur and the 2023 Punjabi film Jodi, which was inspired by the couple's life. On the evidence of the records themselves, Amarjot Kaur stands as one of the defining female voices of her era in Punjabi music.
