Born to a Pakistani Punjabi family with roots in Rawalpindi district, he became one of Britain's best known fighters, famous for the fastest hands in the sport. He retired in 2022 with 34 wins, 21 of them by knockout, from 40 professional fights. ## From a Bolton gym to Olympic silver Amir Iqbal Khan was born on 8 December 1986 in Bolton, Greater Manchester. His family is Punjabi Rajput, with roots in Matore village in the Kahuta area of Rawalpindi district in Pakistan, and his father ran a car repair garage in Bolton. Khan first walked into a boxing gym at the age of eight and was competing by 11, building an amateur record of 101 wins and only nine defeats. At the 2004 Athens Olympics he was Britain's only boxer, and at 17 he fought his way to the lightweight final, losing to Cuba's great Mario Kindelan and taking silver. He became Britain's youngest boxing Olympic medallist, and beat Kindelan in his final amateur fight a year later before turning professional amid huge attention. ## The fastest hands in boxing Khan turned professional in July 2005 and raced through his early opponents, winning the Commonwealth lightweight title in 2007\. In September 2008 his rise crashed to a halt when Colombia's Breidis Prescott knocked him out in 54 seconds, a defeat many thought would finish him. Instead he rebuilt in the United States under trainer Freddie Roach, beat the Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera in 2009, and on 18 July 2009, at the age of 22, outpointed Andreas Kotelnik to win the WBA light-welterweight title. His hand speed was breathtaking: punches arrived in flurries that opponents could see starting but could not stop. ## How did Amir Khan unify the world titles? Khan defended his title in style, knocking out Dmitry Salita in 76 seconds and beating Paulie Malignaggi on his American debut in New York in 2010\. After a war with Marcos Maidana, he faced IBF champion Zab Judah in Las Vegas in July 2011 and stopped him in the fifth round to unify the WBA and IBF titles. That winter he lost a disputed points decision to Lamont Peterson in Washington, and in July 2012 Danny Garcia knocked him out in the fourth round in Las Vegas. The boy from Bolton had reached the very top of his division, and the defeats that followed could not rewrite that fact. ## Chasing the biggest nights Khan spent the rest of his career chasing the biggest names in the sport. He beat former champions Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri at welterweight, then in May 2016 jumped two divisions to challenge Saul Canelo Alvarez for the WBC middleweight title in Las Vegas, and was knocked out in the sixth round after a brave start. In 2019 he was stopped by Terence Crawford at Madison Square Garden. Between those nights he remained one of Britain's biggest draws, and his willingness to fight anyone, anywhere, at weights above his natural size defined him as much as his speed did. ## The Brook fight, retirement and the ban On 19 February 2022, after years of rivalry, Khan met Kell Brook at a sold-out Manchester Arena and was stopped in the sixth round. He announced his retirement that May, telling Sky Sports that his love for boxing was no longer there and that he wanted to watch his children grow up. In April 2023 UK Anti-Doping announced that a sample taken after the Brook fight had tested positive for ostarine, and gave him a two-year ban backdated to April 2022\. An independent tribunal accepted that the tiny amount found meant his ingestion was not intentional, a position Khan had maintained throughout. ## Life beyond the ring Outside boxing, Khan set up the Amir Khan Foundation to support charitable causes, appeared twice on the reality show I'm a Celebrity, and fronted the BBC series Meet the Khans: Big in Bolton with his wife Faryal. For British Punjabi and Pakistani families, his rise from a Bolton garage to Las Vegas title nights carried a simple message: a kid from their community could stand at the centre of world sport. Like Wasim Akram in cricket and the new generation led by Babar Azam, Khan's fame reached back across the diaspora to Punjab itself. ## People [Wasim AkramFast Bowler](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/wasim-akram/)[Babar AzamCricketer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/babar-azam/) ## Places [RawalpindiCity, West Punjab](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/rawalpindi/) ## More sports [See all →](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/sports/) * [Monty PanesarEngland Spin Bowler](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/monty-panesar/) * [Milkha SinghTrack athlete](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/milkha-singh/) * [Arshad NadeemJavelin Thrower](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/arshad-nadeem/) * [Imran KhanCricketer and Politician](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/imran-khan/) * [Harmanpreet SinghHockey Player](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/harmanpreet-singh/) Sources (2) 1.
