A bank manager before music took over, he co-founded Rhythm Boyz Entertainment and became one of the most dependable stars of modern Punjabi cinema. ## Early life and education Amrinder Singh Gill was born on 11 May 1976 in Boorchand, a village in the Amritsar area of Majha, and was raised there. His father worked as a doctor and his mother as a teacher. As a boy he would stand in front of a mirror at home, acting out film scenes to himself, long before anyone around him treated performing as a real career. He studied at Khalsa College in Amritsar and went on to take a master's degree in agriculture science at Guru Nanak Dev University. At college he danced bhangra as a supporting artist behind established singers such as Sarbjit Cheema, which put him on stage without yet putting his own name on a poster. After his studies he took a steady job as a manager at the Ferozepur Central Cooperative Bank, and music had to fit around office hours. ## How did Amrinder Gill become a singer? He became a singer slowly, through television and albums rather than a single overnight hit. His first recorded song was for Kala Doria, a programme on Jalandhar Doordarshan, in 1999\. His debut album Apni Jaan Ke followed in early 2000, then Ek Vaada in 2002 and Chan Da Tukda in 2003, each building a small but loyal audience for his soft, romantic singing style. The breakthrough came with Dildarian in 2006, produced by Sukhshinder Shinda. Its title track and Sohni Kuri travelled widely, and the album earned multiple nominations at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards. Ishq in 2008 and Dooriyan in 2009 kept the run going, with songs such as Paigam, Daru, Madhaania and Mel Kara De making his voice familiar across Punjab and the diaspora. ## The Judaa albums Judaa, released in 2011, turned a successful singer into one of the defining voices of his generation. The album won Best Album at the Brit Asia Music Awards, and its songs, above all the title track and Mera Deewanapan, stayed on Punjabi playlists for years. Judaa 2 followed in 2014 and won Best Album at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards. His last standalone single, Supna, came in 2015; after that he sang mainly for his own films, with songs such as Kurta Suha from Angrej, Heerey from Love Punjab and Akhar from Lahoriye. Judaa 3 arrived in 2021, with Chal Jindiye among its most heard tracks. ## Acting: from supporting role to Angrej Gill had taken acting classes in Mumbai before his film debut, a supporting role in Manmohan Singh's Munde UK De in 2009, acting alongside Jimmy Shergill and Neeru Bajwa. His first lead role came in Ik Kudi Punjab Di, and through Taur Mittran Di, Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, Saadi Love Story and Daddy Cool Munde Fool he learned the trade in public, role by role. The turning point was Angrej in 2015, a romance set in the Punjab of the 1940s, in which he played the simple village young man Geja. The film was a major commercial success, grossing over 30 crore rupees worldwide, and Gill won the first of three straight PTC Punjabi Film Awards for Best Actor. He repeated the award with Love Punjab in 2016 and Lahoriye in 2017, three films in a row opposite Sargun Mehta, and won the critics' Best Actor award for the bhangra film Ashke in 2019. ## Chal Mera Putt and Rhythm Boyz In 2013 Gill co-founded the production company Rhythm Boyz Entertainment with Karaj Gill. The banner became a home for the kind of grounded, story-led Punjabi films he wanted to make, and it also helped launch artists such as Gurshabad and Bir Singh. Under it he produced and starred in the Chal Mera Putt series, about Punjabi workers living illegally in Birmingham and holding on to each other far from home. The first film in 2019 became the highest grossing Punjabi film overseas at the time, and sequels followed in 2020 and 2021\. Five of his films, Angrej, the three Chal Mera Putt films and Chhalla Mud Ke Nahi Aaya, have each grossed over 30 crore rupees worldwide.
