Bhai Vir Singh (5 December 1872 to 10 June 1957) was an Amritsar poet, novelist and scholar who is widely regarded as the father of modern Punjabi literature. His novel Sundari (1898) helped create the Punjabi novel, his epic Rana Surat Singh remade Punjabi poetry, and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955 and the Padma Bhushan in 1956 honoured a lifetime of writing and scholarship.

## Early life and education

Vir Singh was born on 5 December 1872 in Amritsar, the eldest of the three sons of Dr Charan Singh, into a family of scholars. His grandfather Kahn Singh was learned in Sanskrit, Braj and traditional medicine, and his maternal grandfather, Giani Hazara Singh, was a noted scholar of Persian and Sanskrit who compiled a lexicon of the Guru Granth Sahib. The household breathed learning, and the boy absorbed both the Sikh scriptural tradition and a curiosity about the wider world. He was married at seventeen to Chatar Kaur, and they had two daughters.

He was educated at the Church Mission School in Amritsar, where he took his matriculation examination in 1891, and he also learned Persian, Urdu and Sanskrit through traditional teaching. This double formation, rooted in Sikh lore yet open to Western literary forms, became the signature of his life's work. Seeing some of his classmates convert to Christianity at the mission school strengthened his own Sikh convictions, and he learned from the missionaries themselves how powerful the written word could be. As a young man he threw himself into the Singh Sabha movement, the great Sikh revival of the late nineteenth century, which sought to renew Sikh identity and education in the face of colonial and missionary pressures.

## Why is Bhai Vir Singh called the father of modern Punjabi literature?

He is called the father of modern Punjabi literature because he created or remade almost every form the modern literature uses: the novel, the epic in blank verse, the short lyric poem and modern Punjabi prose itself. To give those forms readers, he also built the institutions that carried them. In 1894 he founded the Khalsa Tract Society, whose low cost tracts and its journal Nirguniara introduced a fresh, direct literary Punjabi and serialised several of his major works. In November 1899 he started the Khalsa Samachar, a Punjabi weekly. A year after his matriculation he had already set up a lithograph press with Wazir Singh, a friend of his father, and his first commissions were geography textbooks for schools.

## Father of the Punjabi novel

Bhai Vir Singh, as he came to be honoured, virtually created the Punjabi novel. Beginning with Sundari in 1898, followed by Bijay Singh in 1899 and Satwant Kaur, published in two parts in 1900 and 1927, he wrote historical romances set in the heroic eighteenth century of Sikh history, offering his readers models of courage, sacrifice and dignity at a time when the community's confidence was shaken. The novel form itself was imported from Europe, but he filled it with Punjab's own past, and the books were devoured by a new reading public. Sundari, whose heroine Sunder Kaur is one of his strong women characters, is widely regarded as the first novel written in Punjabi.

He continued to enrich Punjabi prose with Baba Naudh Singh, serialised in Nirguniara from 1907 and published in book form in 1921\. Through these novels he did more than entertain: he gave modern Punjabi literature its narrative foundation and showed that the language could carry sustained, sophisticated storytelling. For this pioneering achievement he is acknowledged as the creator of modern Punjabi literature.

## The poet and the epic

If his novels founded Punjabi prose, his poetry remade Punjabi verse. His epic Rana Surat Singh, begun in serial form in 1905 and published as a book in 1919, runs to more than 14,000 lines and is a profound meditation on love, death and spiritual reunion, told through the widowed Rani Raj Kaur's longing for her departed husband. It is considered his masterpiece, a work of mystical depth that stands with the great religious poetry of the tradition.

After the epic he turned to shorter lyrics, and the collections came steadily: Dil Tarang (1920), Tarel Tupke (1921), Lehran de Haar (1921), Matak Hulare (1922), Bijlian de Haar (1927), and finally Mere Saiyan Jio (1953). These poems, with their exquisite music and devotional feeling, paved the way for the modern Punjabi poem. He also wrote the first play in Punjabi, Raja Lakhdata Singh (1910), as well as translations and theological works, and his writings did much to define and defend Sikh thought in the twentieth century.

## Scholar, editor and institution builder

His scholarship was as large as his creative work. He revised and enlarged Giani Hazara Singh's dictionary, Sri Guru Granth Kosh, published in its revised form in 1927\. He brought out critical editions of old Sikh texts, among them Sikhan di Bhagat Mala (1912), Prachin Panth Prakash (1914) and Puratan Janam Sakhi (1926). His annotation of Kavi Santokh Singh's Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth, published from 1927 to 1935 in fourteen volumes, was his longest single undertaking, and the commentary on the Adi Granth that occupied his last years was left unfinished at his death and published posthumously in seven volumes.

The same institution building impulse ran through his public life. He was among the principal promoters of the Chief Khalsa Diwan and the Sikh Educational Society, and one of the founders of the Punjab and Sind Bank in 1908\. Younger writers gathered around him: the poet Dhani Ram Chatrik met him at the Wazir Hind Press in 1893 and was inspired by him to write poetry in Punjabi, and the scientist poet Puran Singh found his spiritual home after meeting him at a Sikh Educational Conference in Sialkot in 1912\. IndiaNetZone lists Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha, Dhani Ram Chatrik and Puran Singh among the writers he influenced.

## Honours and later life

The honours came late and in a rush. Punjab University conferred on him an honorary doctorate in Oriental learning in 1949, he was nominated to the Punjab Legislative Council in 1952, and he received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955 and the Padma Bhushan in 1956\. The very title Bhai, by which the world knows him, is an honorific given to those regarded as scholars and saints of the Sikh faith. He died at his home in Amritsar on 10 June 1957, at the age of eighty-four, and India Post issued a stamp for his birth centenary in 1972\. His home and library in Amritsar remain a place of pilgrimage for lovers of Punjabi letters.

## Legacy

Bhai Vir Singh stands at the head of modern Punjabi literature as its founder and renewer. He took a literary tradition that had grown quiet and filled it with new forms, the novel, the epic, the lyric, while keeping it rooted in Sikh spirituality. Every Punjabi novelist since writes in his shadow, and his poems are still sung in homes and gurdwaras. In him, scholarship, devotion and artistry met in rare harmony.
