Bhisham Sahni (8 August 1915 to 11 July 2003) was born in Rawalpindi, in undivided Punjab, the younger brother of the actor Balraj Sahni. Punjabi was his mother tongue and Urdu the language of his schooling, and in time he worked in Hindi, English, Sanskrit and Russian as well. He took a master's degree in English literature from Government College, Lahore, and later a PhD from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1958.

He joined the freedom struggle, took part in the Quit India movement of 1942 and served time in jail. When riots broke out in Rawalpindi in March 1947 he was an active Congress worker organising relief for refugees, and that experience stayed at the centre of his writing for the rest of his life. After the riots he went with a health officer to Thoha Khalsa, a village near Rawalpindi where many women had died in a well during the attacks. He left Rawalpindi by train on 13 August 1947, telling his father he would be back within a week, but the trains stopped and he never lived there again. His father stayed on in the family house until November 1947.

## From theatre to the classroom

In 1948 Sahni began working with the Indian People's Theatre Association, an organisation his brother Balraj was already closely associated with, acting in and directing plays. In 1949 and 1950 he apprenticed as an actor with Balraj himself. He directed the play Bhoot Gari, adapted for the stage by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, and toured Punjab with IPTA. Before settling in Delhi he taught briefly in Ambala and at Khalsa College, Amritsar. In Delhi he taught English at Delhi College, the college now called Zakir Husain Delhi College, and from 1957 to 1963 he worked in Moscow as a translator for the Foreign Languages Publishing House, translating Russian literature, including Tolstoy, into Hindi. Back in Delhi he edited the literary journal Nayi Kahaniyan from 1965 to 1967, and he retired from teaching in 1980.

He also helped run the literary movements he believed in. He was general secretary of the All India Progressive Writers' Association from 1975 to 1985, and founder chairman of SAHMAT, set up in memory of the murdered theatre activist Safdar Hashmi.

## The writing: novels, stories and plays

Tamas made his name, but Sahni wrote six other novels: Jharokhe (1967), Kadian (1971), Basanti (1979), Mayyadas Ki Marhi (1987), Kunto (1993) and Neeloo, Nilima, Nilofar (2000). Mayyadas Ki Marhi, set in Punjab as the Khalsa Raj fell and British rule took hold, is counted among his finest. Around the novels stand more than a hundred short stories gathered in ten collections, from Bhagya Rekha (1953) through Bhatakti Raakh (1966), Wang Chu (1978), Nishachar (1983), Pali (1989) and Daayan (1996), and plays including Hanoosh (1977), Kabira Khada Bazar Mein (1981), Madhavi (1982), Muavze (1993) and Alamgeer. His Partition stories, among them "Pali" and "Amritsar Aa Gaya Hai", are among his finest short work, and he wrote the screenplay for Kumar Shahani's film Kasba (1991), adapted from a story by Chekhov.

His plays had a stage life of their own. Hanoosh was staged by Rajindra Nath and later by Arvind Gaur, and adapted into Kashmiri as Waqtsaaz in 2004\. Kabira Khada Bazar Mein has been revived by directors including M. K. Raina. Madhavi, first staged by Rajindra Nath, later became a celebrated solo performance by Rashi Bunny.

He wrote about his own family too: an autobiography, Aaj Ke Ateet, published in English as Today's Pasts, and Balraj My Brother, a biography of his elder brother. Fellow writers praised his voice: serene, gently ironic, and stocked with characters drawn from the Punjab towns he knew at first hand.

Recognition as a story writer came in 1956, when his story "Chief Ki Daawat" (The Chief's Party) appeared in the magazine Kahani. Like much of his best work, it turns on a small domestic scene that opens out into the manners and quiet cruelties of a whole society.

## What is Tamas about?

Tamas, a Hindi word for darkness, opens in a city in undivided Punjab with Nathu, a tanner, who is bribed to kill a pig. When the carcass is found on the steps of the local mosque the next morning, rumour and political calculation do the rest, and the city slides into a riot that Sahni follows through officials, party workers and the families caught in the lanes. The novel refuses the idea that such violence simply erupts. It shows it being prepared, step by step. Tamas has been translated into English, French, German, Japanese and many Indian languages, and Daisy Rockwell's English translation is widely treated as the definitive one.

## Tamas on screen

Govind Nihalani found the novel in a Delhi bookshop while working on Richard Attenborough's Gandhi, and Sahni, who had seen Nihalani's Aakrosh, agreed to the adaptation. It was filmed in Mumbai after plans to shoot in Pakistani Punjab were dropped. Sahni himself played Harnam Singh, a Sikh villager who flees his home with his wife Banto, played by Dina Pathak, in a cast led by Om Puri as Nathu. Telecast on Doordarshan in 1988, the serial drew threats, and Nihalani was given security cover for eight weeks. At the National Film Awards it won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film on National Integration, with Surekha Sikri named Best Supporting Actress and Vanraj Bhatia winning for the music.

## Why is Bhisham Sahni remembered?

Bhisham Sahni is remembered above all for Tamas (1974), his novel of a Punjab city sliding into a Partition riot, which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975 and reached a vast audience through Nihalani's television adaptation, in which Sahni played Harnam Singh. Britannica describes his writing on Partition as work of extreme sensitivity and little recrimination, and that balance, anger at the violence without hatred of any one community, is the quality readers still cite first.

He acted as well as wrote. His film debut came in the lead role in Saeed Akhtar Mirza's Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! in 1984, and he went on to appear in Tamas (1988), Kasba (1991), Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha (1993) and, as his last film, Aparna Sen's Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002).

## Honours and later life

Alongside the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamas in 1975, his honours built up over decades: the Lotus Award in 1981, the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1983, the Padma Bhushan in 1998, the Shalaka Samman in 1999, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2001, and the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, India's highest literary honour, in 2002\. He died on 11 July 2003, aged 87\. In 2017 India Post released a commemorative postage stamp in his honour, and his books, above all Tamas, remain in print and on reading lists wherever Partition literature is taught.
