Born Daler Singh in Patna on 18 August 1967, he built a pop career outside film music with Bolo Ta Ra Ra and Tunak Tunak Tun, two songs still recognised across generations. ## Early life Daler Singh was born on 18 August 1967 in Patna, Bihar, into a Punjabi Sikh family. Music was the family trade: his younger brother [Mika Singh](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/mika-singh/) also became a leading singer, and another brother, Shamsher Singh, sang as well. In 1991 Daler formed his own group, made up of his brothers, cousins and friends, and began performing as Daler Mehndi. The first national recognition came abroad. In 1994 he was awarded the Voice of Asia International Ethnic and Pop Music Contest in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The win brought him to the attention of the label Magnasound, which signed him for a three album contract, and set up one of the fastest rises in Indian pop. ## How did Daler Mehndi become famous? He became famous in 1995, when his debut album Bolo Ta Ra Ra sold over 20 million copies and won him the Channel V Best Indian Male Pop Artist Award. At a time when Hindi film songs dominated Indian popular music, a Punjabi language pop album selling at that scale was a new kind of success, and it made Mehndi a star in his own right rather than a playback voice. The follow ups kept the pace. His second album, Dardi Rab Rab, released a year later, surpassed the sales of the first, and he again won the Channel V Best Indian Male Artist Award. In 1997 the third album, Balle Balle, won Channel V Awards in six categories and went multi-platinum. The same year he composed and performed Na Na Na Re for the film Mrityudata, appearing on screen with Amitabh Bachchan; the film soundtrack sold 1.5 million units in India. ## Tunak Tunak Tun and the world stage In 1998 he released Tunak Tunak Tun, whose words play on the sound of the tumbi, the Punjabi string instrument. Its video was the first Indian music video made with chroma key technology, and Mehndi, tired of critics saying his songs succeeded because of the dancers in his videos, performed every role in it himself, appearing as four figures for the four elements. Made on a then unprecedented budget of 25 million rupees, it cemented his standing as the biggest pop star in India at the time and won Best Indian Pop Album at the 1998 Screen Awards. The song then had a second life few Indian pop songs have matched. It built a cult following in the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan by 1999, and in the 2000s it became an international viral video. The game company Blizzard Entertainment built its dance into World of Warcraft, and in 2014 the electronic artist Deadmau5 performed a remix of it with Mehndi in India. Mehndi has toured widely across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and many other countries. ## Film songs, DRecords and later work Alongside his own albums he became a familiar film voice. His playback work includes Ru-Ba-Ru for Maqbool in 2003 and the title song of Rang De Basanti in 2006, among many others. His 2000 album Ek Dana mixed folk, rock and pop, and its song Sajan Mere Satrangiya featured Priyanka Chopra in its video in the year she won Miss World. In 2000 he launched his own label, DRecords, which has released artists including Hussain Baksh and the Safri Boys. He is also credited with creating a style he calls Rabbabi, blending thumri, Sufi music and rock, and with an instrument, the Swar Mandir, launched in 2012 by Pandit Ravi Shankar. His Daler Mehndi Green Drive, launched in 1998, has planted over 1.2 million saplings in and around Delhi. ## The 2003 case and personal life In 2003, Patiala police booked Mehndi and his brother Shamsher on complaints alleging that they had taken money from people by falsely promising to take them abroad as members of their troupes. In March 2018 a Patiala court convicted him in the human trafficking case and sentenced him to two years in prison. A sessions court dismissed his appeal on 14 July 2022 and he was sent to Patiala jail. On 15 September 2022 the Punjab and Haryana High Court suspended the sentence and he was granted bail, as PTI reported at the time. Mehndi had said he would appeal against the conviction. Mehndi is married to Taranpreet Kaur and has four children. His daughter Ajit Kaur Mehndi is married to Navraj Hans, the son of Punjabi singer [Hans Raj Hans](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/hans-raj-hans/). In April 2019 he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. ## Legacy Daler Mehndi changed what an Indian pop star could be. He helped make bhangra popular worldwide and showed that Indian pop music could stand independent of Bollywood, selling albums on the strength of a voice, a turban, long flowing robes and songs built for dancing. The stars who followed him, including his own brother Mika Singh, worked in a market his 1990s albums had created.
