Dev Anand (26 September 1923 to 3 December 2011) was a Hindi film actor, director and producer from Gurdaspur in Punjab. Along with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, he formed the trio of stars who dominated Indian cinema in the 1950s and 1960s, according to The Guardian and the BBC.

## Early life

Dev Anand was born Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand on 26 September 1923 in Gurdaspur, Punjab, according to Britannica, The Guardian and India's Press Information Bureau. Wikipedia places the birth in Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district, which is now in Narowal District, Pakistan. His father, Pishori Lal Anand, was a leading lawyer in the Gurdaspur district court, and his mother was Indravati.

He was the third of four sons; his brothers included the film-maker Chetan and the director Vijay, Wikipedia reports. Dev studied up to matriculation at Sacred Heart School in Dalhousie, then at Government College Dharamshala, and took a BA in English literature at Government College, Lahore. Britannica dates his graduation to 1943.

He tried and failed to join the Royal Indian Navy, The Guardian writes, and then went to Bombay, where he worked in the military censor's office at Churchgate before turning to films, according to the BBC and Wikipedia.

## Career

Chetan introduced him to the Indian People's Theatre Association, and he was offered the lead in Prabhat's Hum Ek Hain (1946), a film about Hindu-Muslim unity. On that set in Pune he befriended Guru Dutt, and the two agreed to help each other when either succeeded, Wikipedia says. His breakthrough was Ziddi (1948) at Bombay Talkies, which also introduced Kishore Kumar as a playback singer, The Guardian reports.

In 1949 Dev and Chetan founded Navketan Films. Its first film, Afsar (1950), flopped, but Baazi (1951), directed by Guru Dutt, was a hit that the BBC calls the beginning of "Bombay Noir". Taxi Driver (1954), Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Kala Pani (1958), Kala Bazar (1960) and Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) kept him at the front of Hindi cinema. His peak came with Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), Johny Mera Naam (1970) and Tere Mere Sapne (1971), all directed by Vijay, according to The Guardian.

Dev turned director with Prem Pujari (1970). His later directorial hits included Haré Raama Haré Krishna, about drugs among the young, and Des Pardes (1978), about illegal immigration to the UK. Wikipedia counts 114 Hindi films, 92 of them with him as the solo lead. His last film, Chargesheet (2011), was released two months before his death.

## Honours and personal life

Britannica records two Filmfare Best Actor awards, for Kala Pani (1958) and Guide (1965). The Government of India gave him the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2002, the 34th recipient of that award, according to the Press Information Bureau.

He opposed the Emergency of the 1970s, and Wikipedia reports that he led film personalities against it and campaigned in the 1977 elections. In 1954 he married the actress Kalpana Kartik. They had a son, Suneil, and a daughter, Devina, The Guardian and Wikipedia report.

## Death and legacy

Dev Anand died of cardiac arrest in London on 3 December 2011, aged 88, according to Britannica and Wikipedia. His funeral was held in London, and his ashes were taken to India for immersion in the Godavari, Wikipedia says.

India Post issued a stamp with his image on 3 May 2013\. The BBC's biographer Sidharth Bhatia called him "the first really cool hero of the Hindi screen". Actor Rajesh Khanna said he was his idol and inspiration, Wikipedia reports, and the playback singer Mohammed Rafi lent his voice to many of Dev's songs.
