He built his career in Punjabi albums and films, crossed into Hindi cinema with Udta Punjab in 2016, and then took Punjabi music to a global stage, becoming the first Indian artist to perform in Punjabi at Coachella in 2023 and the first Punjabi artist to perform on The Tonight Show in 2024. ## Early life Dosanjh was born Diljit Singh on 6 January 1984 in Dosanjh Kalan, a village in Phillaur tehsil of Jalandhar district. His father, Balbir Singh, worked for Punjab Roadways, and his mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, is a homemaker. He has an elder sister and a younger brother. As a boy he moved to Ludhiana to live with a maternal uncle, and finished his schooling at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School there. While still at school he began singing kirtan in local gurdwaras. That devotional start matters to his story: the ease and control listeners hear in his pop singing was first trained in religious music, long before studios or tours. ## Music career: albums that built the audience His recording career began with Finetone Cassettes and the album Ishq Da Uda Ada, followed by Smile in 2005 and Chocolate in 2008\. The Next Level in 2009, made with Yo Yo Honey Singh, widened his reach, and Back 2 Basics in 2012 kept him at the centre of Punjabi pop through the film years that followed. The catalogue kept growing as the audience went global. His 2020 album G.O.A.T. reached number one on Billboard's Top Triller Global chart and the top 20 in Canada, and he had recorded 13 studio albums by 2023, TEG Live reported. Moonchild Era followed in 2021, and its song Lover became one of his most streamed tracks. Collaborations, including Hass Hass with Sia, carried his voice to listeners who had never heard Punjabi music before, without changing the language he sings in. ## How did Diljit Dosanjh take Punjabi music global? The short answer is scale, built step by step. In April 2023 he performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, the first Indian artist to perform there, singing in Punjabi in traditional dress. The Born To Shine world tour then played arenas in North America, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The Dil-Luminati tour raised the scale again. Its opening show at BC Place in Vancouver on 27 April 2024 drew 48,000 people and was described by promoter Live Nation, reported by Pollstar, as the largest Punjabi event outside India. The North American leg closed at Rogers Centre in Toronto on 13 July 2024\. In June 2024, between tour dates, he became the first Punjabi artist to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, singing Born To Shine and G.O.A.T. in traditional Punjabi attire. ## Film career Dosanjh entered films with a cameo in Mel Karade Rabba in 2010 and his first lead role in The Lion of Punjab in 2011\. Jatt and Juliet in 2012, opposite Neeru Bajwa, made him a leading star of Punjabi cinema, and Punjab 1984, Sardaar Ji, Ambarsariya and Super Singh kept him there through the decade. Jatt and Juliet 3 in 2024 showed the partnership with Bajwa still drawing audiences twelve years later. His Hindi film debut was Udta Punjab in 2016, where he played police officer Sartaj Singh. The performance won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He followed it with Phillauri, Soorma in 2018, where he played hockey player Sandeep Singh, Good Newwz, and Crew. As a producer he backed Honsla Rakh in 2021, in which he also starred. His most demanding role came in 2024, when he played the Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila in Imtiaz Ali's Netflix biopic of the same name, opposite Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot. The Hollywood Reporter India reported that the film was India's only entry at the 53rd International Emmy Awards in 2025, with two nominations: TV Movie or Mini-Series for the film, and Best Performance by an Actor for Dosanjh. He did not win, but the nomination took a Punjabi folk story, and a Punjabi performance, to a global television stage. ## Honours and later life Alongside the tour records, Dosanjh was the first turbaned artist to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds in India, and the first turbaned artist on the cover of Vogue India, TEG Live noted in 2023\. Billboard Canada put him on the cover of its first print edition in 2024, as the existing Jugti profile reported. He is private about family life and rarely discusses it in interviews, a boundary he has held even as his public profile grew. Reports about his personal life should be read with that in mind: he has not made his family part of his public work. Through his Saanjh Foundation he supports underprivileged children and elderly people in Punjab, work he mentions more readily than private matters. ## What is Diljit Dosanjh known for?
