Fazal Shah Sayyad (1827-1890) was a Punjabi poet of Lahore who wrote in the qissa tradition, the long narrative poems through which Punjab retold its great love stories. His Sohni Mahiwal, composed in 1848, became the most popular Punjabi telling of the tragedy of Sohni and Mahiwal, the lovers of the river Chenab, and it is still the version Punjab sings today.

## Early life

Fazal Shah was born in 1827 at Nawan Kot, then a suburb of Lahore and now part of the city, and he lived there through his life. He was born in the last years of Sikh rule in Punjab: Maharaja Ranjit Singh died in 1839, when the poet was still a boy, and the British annexed Punjab ten years later. Unlike the court poets of the old Lahore Darbar, Fazal Shah earned his living at a desk. The literary histories preserve one firm detail of his working life: he was a clerk in the Lahore office of the Financial Commissioner, the chief revenue authority of the province under British rule.

Almost nothing else about his personal life has come down to us. No portrait of him survives, no contemporary wrote his biography, and even his dates are not recorded consistently. Most references give 1827 for his birth and 1890 for his death, at Lahore. A scholarly study of the qissa tradition gives 1828-1890, and one history of Punjabi literature records his death as early as 1873, so the exact years should be read as approximate. What is not in doubt is the century he belonged to and the city he never left.

## When did Fazal Shah write Sohni Mahiwal?

Scholarship dates his Sohni Mahiwal to 1848, which would make him about twenty-one when he composed the poem that made his name. The story itself was far older. Sohni and Mahiwal is one of the four most popular romances of Punjab, and tellings of it circulated in both Punjab and Sindh long before Fazal Shah. Other poets had versified it, but his telling, in flowing classical qissa verse, is the one Punjab took to its heart. Literary surveys call it the most popular Punjabi rendition of the tale, and the Sahitya Akademi's Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature judges Sohni Mahiwal the best of all his works.

## The story the qissa tells

The tale is set at Gujrat, a trading town on the banks of the Chenab. Sohni is the beautiful daughter of Tulla, a potter, and she decorates the pitchers and mugs her father throws on his wheel. Izzat Beg, a wealthy young trader from Bukhara travelling with a caravan, sees her at the shop and loses his heart. To stay near her he lets the caravan leave without him, takes service in the potter's house and grazes the family's buffaloes, until the rich merchant is known to everyone simply as Mahiwal, the buffalo herder.

The affair scandalises the potter community, and Sohni's parents marry her off at once to a man of their own caste, in a village across the river. She refuses her husband, and Mahiwal, now living as a faqir in a hut on the far bank, swims the Chenab by night to meet her, always bringing her a fish he has caught. In Fazal Shah's telling, one night when the river gives him no fish, Mahiwal cuts a piece of flesh from his own thigh and cooks it for her. When Sohni learns what he has done, she insists that until he heals, she will do the swimming herself, floating on a hard-baked earthen pot she hides in the bushes. Her sister-in-law discovers the hiding place and swaps the pot for one of unbaked clay. On a stormy night, mid-river, the soft pot dissolves in the waves. Mahiwal hears her cries, plunges in to save her, and the two drown together. Unusually for a love legend, it is the heroine who does the nightly crossing, a reversal that has kept the story at the centre of Punjabi song and painting ever since.

## His other qissas

Sohni Mahiwal was not his only romance. The standard references credit Fazal Shah with qissas on three more of the great love legends of the region: Heer Ranjha, Sassi Punnu and Laila Majnu. Folk Punjab's catalogue of his poetry adds a Yusuf Zulaikha as well, though lists of his works vary from source to source, and none of these other poems won anything like the fame of Sohni Mahiwal. Taken together, the qissas place him in the last classical generation of the form, a contemporary of Qadaryar, working in the tradition that Waris Shah and Hashim Shah had raised to the summit of Punjabi letters.

## Legacy

Fazal Shah's name survives because one poem outshone everything else he wrote. When Punjabis sing Sohni Mahiwal today, in the renderings made famous by Pathanay Khan and Alam Lohar, or in the much-loved song Paar Channa De, they are singing the story in the shape he gave it. Painters have returned to the swimming Sohni again and again, in Kangra-style folk paintings and in the celebrated canvases of Sobha Singh. In the 1920s the poet Puran Singh drew on Fazal Shah's qissa for two of his own poems, Sohni's Hut and Sohni's Statue, holding Sohni up as a national emblem of love for the whole Punjabi people. The clerk of Nawan Kot left no monument but a story, and more than a century and a half later the story is still sung on both sides of the Chenab.
