Gama Pehlwan, born Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt on 22 May 1878 in Jabbowal village in Amritsar district, was a Punjabi pehlwani wrestler known as the Great Gama and Rustam-e-Hind. Sources report that he remained undefeated in a career spanning more than 52 years.

## Early life in Jabbowal and a wrestling family

Gama was born into a Kashmiri Muslim family of traditional wrestlers who had long settled in Punjab. His father, Muhammad Aziz Baksh, was a wrestler, and after his father died when Gama was six, he was raised first by his maternal grandfather and then by his uncle Ida Pahalwan, who trained him. The family name was Butt, and wrestling was not a hobby in that household: it was the family trade, taught in the akhara, the earthen wrestling pit where pehlwani wrestlers lived, trained and ate under a strict daily discipline.

He was first noticed at the age of ten, in 1888, at a strongman contest in Jodhpur built around gruelling exercises such as squats. More than four hundred wrestlers took part, and the boy finished among the last fifteen still going. Accounts say the Maharaja of Jodhpur named him the winner because of his young age, and that he was bedridden for a week afterwards. Google, in its 2022 Doodle note, records the version of his childhood routine that became famous: 500 lunges and 500 pushups at only ten years old. He was then taken into training connected with the Maharaja of Datia, and he took up wrestling properly at fifteen.

## The long road to Rustam-e-Hind

In 1895, at seventeen, Gama challenged Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala, the reigning Rustam-e-Hind from Gujranwala, a far taller and far more experienced champion. Everyone expected the teenager to be beaten quickly. Instead the bout went on for hours and ended in a draw, and even though Gama bled from the nose and ears, he had damaged the champion enough that the contest became the turning point of his career. From then on he was seen as the next contender for the Indian title.

By 1910 Gama had beaten every prominent Indian wrestler who faced him except Raheem Bakhsh himself. The final settlement between the two men came after Gama returned from England: at Allahabad he beat Raheem Bakhsh at last and took the title of Rustam-e-Hind, the lineal champion of India. Asked later who his strongest opponent had been, Gama named Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala. It is a useful measure of the man that his hardest fight, by his own account, was the rival he had first drawn with as a boy of seventeen.

## What happened when Gama wrestled in London in 1910?

In London in 1910, Gama arrived with his younger brother Imam Baksh and found the doors slow to open, partly, accounts say, because promoters doubted a wrestler of his height. He answered with an open challenge: he would throw any three wrestlers of any weight class in thirty minutes. When the leading men held back, he named Stanislaus Zbyszko and Frank Gotch directly. The American Benjamin Roller was the first leading wrestler to accept, and Gama pinned him quickly, then defeated a string of wrestlers to force his way into the John Bull tournament.

The final, on 10 September 1910, set Gama against Zbyszko, one of the premier wrestlers in the world. Within a minute Zbyszko was taken down, and he stayed down, hugging the mat to nullify Gama's strength, for the remaining 2 hours and 35 minutes. The match was declared a draw, and many in the crowd were angry at the defensive tactics. A rematch was set for 17 September, Zbyszko did not appear, and Gama was awarded the prize money and the John Bull Belt, which entitled him to be called Rustam-e-Zamana, world champion. Reference works date the version of the World Heavyweight Championship awarded to him to 15 October 1910\. On the same tour he beat respected champions including Roller, Maurice Deriaz, Johann Lemm and Jesse Peterson, while challenges to Gotch, Georges Hackenschmidt and the judo champion Taro Miyake were declined.

## Patiala patronage and the 1928 rematch

After the world title, Gama became a court wrestler under the patronage of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, the great sporting prince of Punjab, and Patiala remained his base. In 1922, during a visit to India, the Prince of Wales presented him with a silver mace. Honours, however, did not bring opponents: for long stretches no leading wrestler would face him, and one Lahore bout in 1919, against Ghulam Mohiuddin, still ended in a draw after more than two hours.

The rematch the wrestling world had waited eighteen years for came in Patiala in January 1928, staged by the Maharaja. Zbyszko arrived looking strong, and Gama, by report, looked thinner than usual. It did not matter. Gama overpowered him and won inside a minute; some accounts give the fall at 42 seconds. Zbyszko is reported to have praised him afterwards, calling him a tiger. In February 1929 Gama beat Jesse Petersen in about a minute and a half, one of his last recorded major bouts.

## Partition, Lahore and the final years

After the Partition of India in 1947, Gama moved to Pakistan and settled in Lahore. Google's Doodle note and other accounts describe him as a hero of that violent summer: in Lahore he is said to have protected Hindu neighbours and saved many lives when mobs attacked during the riots. He did not formally retire until 1952, by most accounts largely because no opponents remained, and after retiring he trained his nephew Bholu Pahalwan, who held the Pakistani wrestling championship for almost twenty years. His last years were marked by illness and money worries, eased in part by land and a pension from the Pakistan government. He died in Lahore on 23 May 1960, a day after his eighty-second birthday.

## Why is Gama Pehlwan still remembered?

Gama is still remembered because the core of the record, an undefeated champion from a Punjab village who carried Indian wrestling into the heart of London in 1910 and beat the world's best known heavyweight in Patiala in 1928, is documented, while the rest has grown into legend. Tradition credits him with daily routines of thousands of baithaks and dands and a vast diet of milk, almonds and meat. Those numbers vary from account to account and are best read as reported tradition about akhara discipline, not as measured fact. What is documented is the influence: Bruce Lee was a known admirer who took elements of Gama's conditioning, including the baithak and the cat stretch, into his own training, as both Google and reference accounts record. A heavy doughnut shaped disc called a hasli, said to weigh 100 kilograms and used by Gama for squats and pushups, is kept at the National Institute of Sports museum in Patiala. On 22 May 2022 Google marked his 144th birthday with a Doodle, and in Punjab his name still works as a byword: to call someone a Gama is to call them the strongest person in the room.
