He built his career first in Birmingham, England, where he worked labouring jobs while writing songs, and then, after being removed from Britain in January 2012, rebuilt it in Punjab. His best known songs include Main Ni Peenda, Sahan To Pyariya, Tohar, Ik Gal, Illegal Weapon and Yeah Baby, and he runs his own label, Fresh Media Records. ## Early life in Rurka Kalan and Birmingham Gurmukh Singh Sandhu was born on 4 April 1984 at Rurka Kalan, a village near Goraya in Jalandhar district, in the Doaba region of Punjab. He moved to England as a teenager in 2002 and settled in Birmingham, the centre of Britain's Punjabi music scene. Accounts of those years describe him working as a construction worker and in other labouring jobs while writing songs in his spare time, determined to turn the writing into a career. That double life, days on building sites and nights around Birmingham's bhangra studios, shaped the voice that listeners first heard in 2010\. The city gave him access to the producers who ran the UK Asian charts, among them DJ Dips, DJ H, GV and Kam Frantic, and his early recordings were made for that British Punjabi audience before Punjab itself took notice. ## How did Garry Sandhu become famous? Garry Sandhu became famous with his debut song Main Ni Peenda in 2010, a track about giving up drink that became a household name almost overnight in the British Punjabi community. The album Fresh followed in 2011, carrying Sahan To Pyariya, Tohar, Fresh and Din Raat, several of which reached number one on the UK Asian Music Chart. In October 2011 he won both Best Newcomer and Best Male Act at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards, a double win that marked him as the leading new voice in UK bhangra. The second album, Magic, arrived in 2012, and the duet Ik Gal, sung with Sudesh Kumari, won Best Duet Vocalists at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards, while Sahan To Pyariya won him Best Debut Vocalist (Male) at the same awards. By then his songs were charting in Punjab as strongly as in Britain, and the village singer from Rurka Kalan had become a name on both sides of the Punjabi world. ## Removal from Britain and the rebuild in Punjab At the height of that first success his British life ended. Sandhu had stayed in the United Kingdom after permission to remain was refused, and in late 2011 he was arrested and detained by the UK Border Agency. After a short legal process he was removed to India in January 2012\. The story was widely reported at the time because it cut short, in public, the rise of one of British Asian music's newest stars. He has spoken about that period with regret. Quoted in 2019, when a return to headline a concert in Birmingham was announced, he said he was moulded by his past, regretted his actions on immigration, and was grateful to fans and to the UK authorities for the chance to return. The first music of the Punjab years carried the same honesty: Ik Tera Sahara, a religious song he wrote himself after coming home, dealt with the struggle and low mood of starting again, and the single Brick, released in May 2012, put him back at number one. ## Fresh Media Records and the hit years Rather than sign away control, Sandhu built his own company, Fresh Media Records, which releases his music and work by artists around him, and named his third album Fresh All The Way (2014) after it. He also made his acting debut in 2014, playing Ranjha opposite Jazzy B in the film Romeo Ranjha, and later appeared in Chal Mera Putt 2 (2020). The singles kept coming through the decade: Banda Ban Ja, Ego, Excuses, and then the run that took him to a new level, Laddu and Illegal Weapon, both with Jasmine Sandlas, in 2017\. Business Today, reporting YouTube's year end lists for India, counted Illegal Weapon among the country's top music videos. Yeah Baby followed in 2018, and his songwriting for other singers, including G Khan on tracks such as Jee Karda and Chan Makhna, widened his reach beyond his own voice. A fourth album, Still Here, arrived in 2023, its title a plain statement about a career that had twice looked finished. ## Bollywood versions and later work Bollywood came calling for the songs Punjab and Britain already knew. Yeah Baby was remade as Hauli Hauli for the Ajay Devgn film De De Pyaar De in 2019, sung by Sandhu with Neha Kakkar, and in 2020 Illegal Weapon 2.0, again with Jasmine Sandlas, and Sip Sip 2.0 appeared in Street Dancer 3D, taking his writing into mainstream Hindi cinema. His own Do Gallan (2018) travelled the other way, covered in 2021 by Neha Kakkar and Rohanpreet Singh, a sign of how far his songwriting had spread beyond his own records. His story, from a Doaba village to Birmingham building sites, sudden fame, removal, and a second career built at home in Punjab, is one of the most retold journeys in modern Punjabi music, and his songs about immigrant life still carry weight with the diaspora audience that first made him famous.
