Ustad Ghulam Ali (born 5 December 1940) is a Pakistani ghazal singer from Sialkot district in Punjab and the best-known living voice of the Patiala gharana, famed for Chupke Chupke Raat Din, Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa and Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi. A disciple of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, he carried the classical training of the gharana into the ghazal and made the form sing to film audiences across South Asia.

## A musician's son from Galotian Khurd

He was born in Galotian Khurd, a village near Daska in Sialkot district, into a musical family: his father was a vocalist who also played the sarangi. One of his schoolteachers noticed the boy humming and pushed him towards singing, and by the age of eight he was in formal training on the harmonium, given a raga to practise until it was part of him. His parents named him after the great Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, whom his father admired above all singers, and the name set the course of his life.

In his early teens he finally met his namesake. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was passing back through the region from a Kabul tour when the boy's father asked him to take the youngster as a disciple. The Ustad, rarely in one town for long, first refused regular lessons, then asked the boy to sing. Ghulam Ali gathered his courage and sang the thumri Saiyyan Bolo Tanik Mose Rahiyo Na Jaye. The Ustad hugged him and accepted him on the spot. He also trained with the Ustad's younger brothers, Barkat Ali Khan and Mubarak Ali Khan, and learned the tabla alongside the harmonium.

## Radio Pakistan at fourteen

He was a strong student, but music reached him first. A Radio Pakistan representative heard the boy practising on a terrace and invited him to perform, and at fourteen he was singing on a children's programme. Within six months he had advanced to the station's highest grade of artist, and a professional career that would run for more than six decades had begun. Radio and then Pakistan Television made his voice familiar in homes on both sides of Punjab long before records and cassettes carried it abroad.

## Chupke Chupke and the Bollywood chapter

Ghulam Ali first came to India in 1980, and Bombay cinema opened to him two years later when B. R. Chopra used Chupke Chupke Raat Din, written by the poet Hasrat Mohani, in the film Nikaah (1982). The ghazal became a standard almost overnight. Chamakte Chand Ko from the film Awargi followed, and in 1984 he recorded the joint album Meeraj-E-Ghazal with Asha Bhosle. His concerts at venues such as the Taj Mahal drew listeners who crossed every border music is supposed to stop at, and he remains as popular in India as in Pakistan.

## What makes Ghulam Ali's ghazal singing different?

Most ghazal singers of his generation came to the form from light music. Ghulam Ali came the other way, from full classical training, and he folded gharana gayaki into the ghazal itself: the taans, the raga discipline and the slow unfolding of a line all survive inside a three-minute poem. He also composes most of what he sings, by his own estimate around 95 per cent of his repertoire, building raga-based settings for poets from Ghalib and Mir to Nasir Kazmi and Mohsin Naqvi. Alongside the ghazals he has sung Punjabi songs, including Heer and Mere Shauq Da Nai Aitbaar Tenu, and Nepali ghazals written by King Mahendra of Nepal.

## Honours and later years

In February 2013 he became the first person to receive the Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Award, named for his own guru, which he called the greatest honour of his life. His album Hasratein was nominated for Best Ghazal Album at the Star GIMA Awards 2014, and in 2016 he received the first Swaralaya Global Legend Award at Trivandrum. A 2015 Mumbai concert was cancelled after protests, and he said he would perform in India again when the atmosphere was right for music, refusing to let his art be used for political mileage. He is married to Afsana Ali; his sons Aamir Ghulam Ali and Nazar Ali Abbas are musicians, carrying the family craft into another generation. Concert promoters on three continents still bill him simply as Ustad, and for younger singers on both sides of the border his career remains the working proof that classical training and popular love can live in the same voice.
