Football reached him early: he joined the St Stephen's Academy in Chandigarh in 2000 and spent the rest of his childhood there, training as a goalkeeper while other boys fought for outfield places. The academy gave him structure and regular matches, and his height, he grew to 1.97 metres, gave him a natural advantage in goal. He was picked for the Punjab Under 16 team and made his state youth debut in 2006 in Haldwani. He stayed at St Stephen's until 2009, when he joined the youth team of East Bengal, one of India's oldest and biggest clubs, in Kolkata. He is also a graduate of DAV College in Chandigarh, an education he completed alongside the football that was quickly becoming his profession. ## East Bengal and the making of a first choice keeper Sandhu signed his first professional contract with East Bengal in 2010 and made five appearances before the end of that season. Seeking regular football, he spent the 2010 to 2011 season on loan at Pailan Arrows, the development side, though the move brought no league appearances and he returned to Kolkata with a point to prove. In the 2011 Federation Cup he began as second choice, but by the start of the I League campaign he had taken the first choice shirt. He made his continental debut in the AFC Cup against Al Oruba of Yemen on 6 March 2012, and across the next two seasons he held his place in one of the most demanding goalkeeping jobs in Indian football, where every mistake is replayed in front of a huge and impatient support. His last league game for East Bengal came in April 2014\. By then, Europe was watching. ## How did Gurpreet Singh Sandhu become the first Indian to play in the Europa League? Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the first Indian to play in the UEFA Europa League by signing for Stabæk of Norway and working his way into the first team over two seasons. He joined the top division club on 15 August 2014, the fifth Indian footballer to play professionally in Europe. The place had to be earned slowly: a friendly debut in January 2015, cup ties through that year, and the club's full Norwegian Cup run in 2016\. His league debut came in late May 2016, a 5 to 0 win away at IK Start, and with it he became the first Indian to play in a European top division league. Five weeks later, on 30 June 2016, he started Stabæk's Europa League first qualifying round tie against Connah's Quay Nomads in Rhyl, Wales, the first Indian ever to feature in that competition. He played the opening half hour before being replaced. The appearances were brief, but the barrier they broke was permanent. ## Bengaluru FC and the Golden Glove years Sandhu returned to India in August 2017, joining Bengaluru FC. He kept a clean sheet on his league debut against Mumbai City, and Bengaluru reached the Indian Super League final in his first season, losing 3 to 2 to Chennaiyin. The next season ended with the trophy: Bengaluru beat FC Goa 1 to 0 in the 2019 final, Sandhu won the league's Golden Glove award, and the club also lifted the Super Cup in 2018 and the Durand Cup in 2022 with him in goal. He won the Golden Glove again in the 2019 to 2020 season, keeping 11 clean sheets. In March 2018 he had signed a contract extension running to May 2023, a rare long commitment that said much about his standing at the club, and he became Bengaluru's vice captain in the 2021 to 2022 season. By October 2026 he had passed 175 league appearances for Bengaluru. ## India captain: the night in Doha and a decade in goal Sandhu's India career began with the Under 19 team in 2009, and he was in the senior squad for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, making his senior debut in a 1 to 1 draw with Turkmenistan. From 2015 he became India's first choice goalkeeper through World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying campaigns. On 3 September 2016 he captained India for the first time, at the age of 24, in a 4 to 1 friendly win over Puerto Rico, one of the youngest captains the country has had. His most famous international night came in September 2019 in Doha, when, wearing the armband in Sunil Chhetri's absence, he made 11 saves against Asian champions Qatar to hold a 0 to 0 draw in a World Cup qualifier. He has won the SAFF Championship four times, in 2011, 2015, 2021 and 2023, and by October 2026 he had won 91 caps for India. ## Honours and what he means for Punjab football In 2019 Sandhu received the Arjuna Award, India's national honour for outstanding achievement in sport. He was the 26th footballer to receive it and only the fourth goalkeeper, after Peter Thangaraj, Brahmanand Sankhwalkar and Subrata Paul. He said at the time that he hoped the recognition would serve as an inspiration to everyone trying to make a career in the sport in the country. For Punjab, his value runs deeper than one award. Football in the state has long lived in the shadow of hockey and cricket, and its biggest modern star is a goalkeeper from Mohali who proved that the road from a Chandigarh academy could lead to a European league, an Indian Super League title and the India captaincy.
