A penalty corner specialist regarded as one of the best drag-flickers in the world, he has scored more international goals for India than any player of the modern era, and he is the first Indian captain to lead the men's team to back-to-back Asian Games gold medals. ## Early life in Timmowal Harmanpreet was born on 6 January 1996 into a Sikh farming family in Timmowal, a village in Amritsar district. Sport came before hockey: as a boy he tried volleyball, football, cricket and athletics, and he took up hockey at the age of ten. At fifteen he left for Jalandhar to join the Surjit Hockey Academy, one of Punjab's famous nurseries of hockey talent, hoping at first to become a forward. The drag-flick, the skill that would define him, came later, but the academy's grounding in defence turned the village boy into a defender who could also decide matches from penalty corners. ## Junior rise His rise through the junior ranks was fast. He scored nine goals at the 2014 Sultan of Johor Cup, where India won the tournament and he was named player of the tournament. At the 2015 Junior Asia Cup in Kuantan he finished as the tournament's top scorer with fourteen goals as India took gold. After a first taste of the Olympics at Rio in 2016, he returned to the junior side for the 2016 Junior World Cup in Lucknow, scored a crucial late goal against Spain in the quarter-final, and lifted the trophy as India beat Belgium in the final. ## Senior breakthrough and the Tokyo bronze Harmanpreet received his first senior call-up in April 2015, for a series against Japan, but breaking in was not smooth: he was dropped, recalled, taken to the Rio Olympics in 2016 where a young India side fell in the quarter-finals, and dropped again. He fought back through the 2016 Junior World Cup and the 2017 season, winning the Asia Cup in Dhaka that year as the tournament's joint top scorer with seven goals. At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, he was one of India's outstanding players, scoring six goals, including one in the bronze medal match against Germany, as India won their first Olympic hockey medal in forty one years. ## What record did Harmanpreet Singh set as India's captain? Appointed captain ahead of the 2022-23 Pro League season, Harmanpreet has made the armband his own, and his record as captain is without parallel in Indian hockey. He led India to gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games, scoring thirteen goals, and to the Asia Cup title at Rajgir in 2025\. At the Paris Olympics in 2024 he finished as the tournament's top scorer with ten goals, scoring both goals in the 2-1 bronze medal win over Spain and twice against Australia in India's first win over them in fifty two years. Then, at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in October 2026, he captained India to a 5-1 win over Malaysia in the final, scoring twice himself and twelve goals across the tournament, joint top scorer, as India defended an Asian Games title for the first time and booked a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. No Indian captain before him had won two Asian Games golds. His two hundredth cap came in February 2024, and by October 2026 his career tally stood at 277 caps and 240 goals as listed by Wikipedia, the most by an Indian in modern hockey. Fans and commentators know him as Sarpanch Saab, the village headman, for the way he runs his team. ## Honours and personal life His honours include the Arjuna Award in 2021 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honour, which he received in January 2025\. He has been named FIH Player of the Year three times, for 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2024\. In the Hockey India League he captains Soorma Hockey Club, who signed him as the most expensive player of the 2024-25 auction. He married Amandeep Kaur in 2021, and the couple have a daughter, Ruhanat Kaur. ## Legacy From the fields of Timmowal to the captaincy of India, Harmanpreet's career has carried Punjab's hockey tradition into a new century. Punjab gave Indian hockey many of its greats, from Balbir Singh Sr to the Olympians of Sansarpur, and Harmanpreet now stands in that line: a defender who scores like a forward, a captain who leads from the penalty corner spot, and a farmer's son whose drag-flick has decided Olympic and Asian Games medals. ## People [Manpreet SinghHockey Player](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/manpreet-singh/)[Balbir Singh Sr.Hockey player](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/balbir-singh-sr/)[Sardar SinghFormer hockey captain](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/sardar-singh/) ## Places [ਤTimmowalVillage, Majha](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/amritsar/timmowal/) ## Harmanpreet Singh in the news [SportsIndia Defend Men's Hockey Gold, Thrash Malaysia 5-1 and Seal LA28 Berthਭਾਰਤ ਨੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹਾਕੀ ਦਾ ਸੋਨ ਤਗ਼ਮਾ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ, ਮਲੇਸ਼ੀਆ ਨੂੰ 5-1 ਨਾਲ ਹਰਾ ਕੇ ਐੱਲ.ਏ. 28 ਦਾ ਟਿਕਟ ਪੱਕਾ ਕੀਤਾ](https://jugti.com/news/sports/india-men-hockey-gold-asian-games-2026/) ## More sports [See all →](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/sports/) * [Abhishek SharmaCricketer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/abhishek-sharma/) * [Dara SinghWrestler, actor](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/dara-singh/) * [Bishan Singh BediCricketer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/bishan-singh-bedi/) * [Gurbachan Singh RandhawaFormer athlete](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/gurbachan-singh-randhawa/) * [Pargat SinghHockey Player](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/pargat-singh/) Sources (3) 1.
