Raised in a Punjabi Sikh family that made musical instruments, she won two television singing competitions as a teenager and young artist, then became one of Bollywood's most recognisable voices with Ik Onkar, Katiya Karun, Heer, Zaalima and Dilbaro, for which she won the IIFA Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2019. ## Early life in Delhi Harshdeep Kaur was born on 16 December 1986 in Delhi, to Savinder Singh Sohal. Music was the family business as well as the family language: her father owned a factory that made musical instruments. She began learning music at the age of six, studying Indian classical music with Tejpal Singh, of the Singh Brothers, and Western classical music with George Pullinkala of Delhi Music Theatre. At twelve she joined the Delhi School of Music to learn the piano, adding a third training to the voice she was already performing with. That training showed early. She won the MTV Video GaGa singing competition, and first sang for a Bollywood film at sixteen, when Sajna Main Haari was released in the 2003 film Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai. Few playback careers begin that young, and hers did not follow the usual path of years of chorus work: the reality show stage, not the recording studio queue, was where she was formed. ## How did Harshdeep Kaur become Sufi Ki Sultana? Harshdeep Kaur became Sufi Ki Sultana by winning the television competition Junoon: Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka in 2008\. The show set three singing traditions against each other, Sufi, folk and Bollywood, with singers from India and Pakistan. Kaur competed in the Sufi team, mentored by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and at the grand finale Amitabh Bachchan, the chief guest, declared her the Sufi Ki Sultana. The name stuck, and so did the look that went with it: she performs Sufi material in distinctive traditional dress with a turban, an image audiences now associate with her before she sings a note. The title was more than a television prize. Sufi repertoire, the poetry of longing and devotion sung across Punjab in both Gurmukhi and Urdu traditions, became the centre of her art, even as film offers multiplied. Shabads and prayers have remained a steady strand of her releases alongside film songs, from early devotional recordings to the prayer singles she still issues on her own label. ## The Bollywood playback years Her film breakthrough with a mass audience came through A. R. Rahman. She sang Ik Onkar, the opening of Rang De Basanti (2006), and Rahman returned to her voice again and again: Katiya Karun in Rockstar (2011), a Punjabi folk energy inside a Hindi rock film, and Heer in Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012). She is also one of the few Indian singers to have sung for a Hollywood production, performing R.I.P., composed by Rahman, in Danny Boyle's 127 Hours. Through the 2010s her voice threaded through many of the decade's best loved Hindi film songs: Jugni Ji, the Alif Allah duet with Arif Lohar in Cocktail; Kabira (Encore) in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani; Bari Barsi in Band Baaja Baaraat, sung with Labh Janjua and Salim Merchant; Nachde Ne Saare in Baar Baar Dekho; Zaalima in Raees, with Arijit Singh; and Twist Kamariya in Bareilly Ki Barfi. She recorded in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and Tamil, and sang for Punjabi films including Punjab 1984, where her lullaby Rabb Meri Umar won her the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. ## Coke Studio, television and the live stage Television kept a parallel claim on her. She is reported as the only singer to have appeared in all four Indian seasons of Coke Studio between 2011 and 2015, singing Hoo, Nirmohiya, Hey Ri, Dinae Dinae with Papon, and Teriyan Tu Jaane. She sang the title song of the Punjabi television serial Bani: Ishq Da Kalma in 2013, winning the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Singer, and in 2019 she sat on the other side of the desk as a coach on The Voice India on StarPlus, alongside Adnan Sami, Kanika Kapoor and Armaan Malik. Her team won the show. Live work took her further than the studio. She toured the United States, Canada, Britain, South Africa and Singapore with A. R. Rahman's Jai Ho world tour in 2010, headlined the Southbank Centre festival in London and the Mosaic Festival in Mississauga, Canada, in 2013, performed at the Heart of Asia conference in Amritsar in 2016, and in 2017 became the first Indian singer to headline the Manchester International Festival. For diaspora audiences in Canada and Britain, her Sufi nights became a standing fixture of the concert calendar. ## Awards, family and later work The awards year of her career was 2019\. For Dilbaro, the farewell song of a father and daughter in Raazi, she won the IIFA Award for Best Female Playback Singer at the 20th IIFA Awards, along with the Star Screen Award and the Zee Cine Award for the same song, honours that confirmed what the industry had long said about her control of emotional, slow burning material. Earlier, Katiya Karun had brought her a round of Best Female Playback nominations in 2012, including Filmfare and IIFA. Kaur married Mankeet Singh in a traditional Sikh wedding in Mumbai on 20 March 2015, and their son Hunar Singh was born in 2021\.
