With composer B Praak and director Arvindr Khaira he forms the team behind a decade of hits, and he co-owns the Desi Melodies label. ## A hotel management graduate from Gidderbaha He was born Rajiv Arora in Gidderbaha, a town near Bathinda in the Malwa region of Punjab, and he took a diploma in hotel management before music took over his life. The pen name came later: in the credits of hundreds of songs he is simply Jaani, one word that Punjabi audiences now read as a guarantee. He married Neha Chauhan in November 2008, years before fame arrived, and the two sides of his life, the small-town graduate and the hitmaker, still sit side by side in interviews. ## Soch and the team that changed Punjabi pop Jaani began his career in 2012 with a religious song, Sant Sipahi, but the breakthrough came a year later with Soch, sung by Harrdy Sandhu and composed by B Praak, with a video directed by Arvindr Khaira. The slow song about a love that cannot be spoken aloud became a phenomenon, and the four men settled into a working team. Joker, Backbone, Horn Blow, Naah, Yaar Ni Mileya and Kya Baat Ay followed, and the album Shayar, with music by B Praak and voices including Ammy Virk, Harrdy Sandhu and Jassie Gill, confirmed that Jaani could carry a whole record with his writing alone. ## The hit years: Naah to Filhall From 2017 the songs grew bigger and travelled further. Mann Bharrya launched B Praak as a singer, Qismat gave Ammy Virk a signature ballad, and Hath Chumne became the first production of the team's own label. Bollywood called: Pachtaoge, sung by Arijit Singh, and Filhall, sung by B Praak with Akshay Kumar in the video, each passed into the small club of Indian songs counted in billions of views, Filhall crossing one billion on YouTube. Titliaan, sung by Afsana Khan, Baarish Ki Jaaye and Filhaal2 Mohabbat kept the run going, and Jaani also stepped into composition himself, first with Taaron Ke Shehar in 2020. The run did not slow. In 2021 his Bijlee Bijlee, sung and composed by Harrdy Sandhu, turned a playful compliment into one of the year's defining Punjabi hooks, played from Delhi weddings to reels across the diaspora. In 2023 he released the album Zohrajabeen, its title track sung by B Praak, a return to the long form after years of singles, and his film writing continued through the decade's Punjabi hits. The pattern held throughout: one writer, one singer he trusted, and a hook that arrived in the first thirty seconds. ## Desi Melodies and a label of his own With Arvindr Khaira, and B Praak alongside, Jaani co-founded the label Desi Melodies, turning the team into a company. The label became a finishing school as much as a business: younger artists such as Romaana, discovered by Jaani in 2017, describe a studio where the lyricist mentors singers on guitar sessions and first stanzas before handing them songs of their own. In 2021 he also stepped in front of the camera, making his acting debut in Jagdeep Sidhu's Punjabi film Qismat 2 opposite Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta. ## What is Jaani's songwriting style? Jaani writes about love the way people actually speak about it: plain words, a single sharp image, and a hook line simple enough to be quoted back. His titles are often the first line of the chorus, his lovers argue, plead and walk away in everyday Punjabi, and the pain in the songs is specific rather than grand. That directness is why his lines travel: a Jaani hook can be sung by a college crowd, quoted in a wedding speech and remade in Hindi without losing its sting. ## The years since The catalogue keeps growing on both sides of the industry: film songs for Qismat, Sufna, Shershaah and Bala in Hindi and Punjabi, the album Zohrajabeen in 2023, and new singles every season.
