Jass Manak, born Jaspreet Singh Manak on 12 February 1999 in the village of Bhakhriana in Jalandhar district, Punjab, is an Indian Punjabi singer-songwriter and composer. Known for Prada, Suit Punjabi, Lehanga, Viah and Boss, he built his career writing nearly all of his own songs, with Lehanga crossing a billion views on YouTube and charting on the Global YouTube weekly chart. Friends and family call him Manaka Da Munda, the boy from the Manak clan, and the nickname fits: he arrived as a teenager with a notebook and turned writing his own songs into a national phenomenon before he turned 21. ## Early life: Bhakhriana to Patiala Jaspreet Singh Manak was born on 12 February 1999 in Bhakhriana, a village in Punjab's Jalandhar district. He did his schooling at Hemkunt Public School in Jalandhar and later graduated from Punjabi University in Patiala. He wanted to be a singer from childhood and began singing lessons at a young age, with his family supporting the dream. He sang at school functions and local events while he was still a student, learning the craft long before the industry knew his name. He released his early music through the label Geet MP3, which became his home for his breakthrough years. ## Breakthrough: from U-Turn to Prada Manak made his debut in 2017 with the song U-Turn. He followed it in 2018 with Without You, but his third song changed everything. Prada, released in 2018, became one of the most-streamed Punjabi songs in India, crossing millions of views within hours of release. The success was instant and total. Prada won Best Song of the Year at the Mirchi Music Awards in 2019, and Manak was suddenly the most talked-about young voice in Punjabi music. He followed it with the commercial hits Suit Punjabi and Boss, both of which he wrote himself. ## What made Lehanga a phenomenon? In 2019 Manak released his debut album Age 19, a fitting title for a star still in his teens. The album featured collaborations with Bohemia and Divine, and in the same year he sang Rabb Wangu and Bandook for the Punjabi film Sikander 2. Then came Lehanga. Written and sung by Manak, with music by Sharry Nexus and featuring Mahira Sharma in the video, the song about a girl who wants an expensive lehenga to show off to her friends became a cultural event. It debuted at number 22 on the Global YouTube weekly music chart and number 5 in India, and also featured on the UK Asian Music Chart. The numbers kept growing. Lehanga crossed a billion views on YouTube and has been reported at 1.8 billion views, making it one of the most-viewed Indian music videos ever. It dominated FM stations and music channels for months after its 2019 release, and years later it remains a wedding-playlist and Instagram-reel staple. Manak became one of the most-listened-to Punjabi artists on YouTube and crossed 500 million streams on the Gaana app. ## A songwriter first What sets Manak apart in Punjabi pop is that he writes. Prada, Lehanga, Boss, Viah and every song on his debut album Age 19 carry his name as lyricist, and he has written all the songs from his singles, EPs and later albums as well. The industry noticed. He wrote Wait for Karan Randhawa in 2018, then California and Qatal for Nishawn Bhullar in 2019\. In 2019 he wrote Surma Kala for Jassi Gill, and in 2020 he wrote Naam Jatt Da for Gippy Grewal, on which he also featured as a singer. His songwriting credits read like a map of the new Punjabi sound. ## Albums, Bollywood and acting Manak did not stop at singles. He released the albums No Competition (2020), with collaborations including Divine and Sunidhi Chauhan, Bad Munda (2021), featuring Emiway Bantai and Bohemia, and Love Thunder (2022). Each record kept his run of hits going with tracks like Yes Or No, Shopping, Saiyaan and Tera Mera Viah. Bollywood came calling too. He sang Jee Ni Karda for the Hindi film Sardar Ka Grandson (2021) and appeared in Tenu Lehanga for Satyameva Jayate 2, where he also made a special appearance as himself. For Punjabi cinema he sang Gal Sun and Shoot Da Order for the film Shooter (2020). He has even acted, playing the lead role of Pamma in the Punjabi film Jatt Brothers (2022) alongside Guri. In January 2024 he announced a partnership with Mass Appeal India, releasing the single Love and Lies and the five-track EP Late Night Talks, for which he wrote and composed every song. ## Personal life and legacy Manak keeps his private life out of the spotlight. In September 2026 he got engaged to fashion designer and creative stylist Komal Tanwar in an intimate ceremony attended by close family and friends, as reported by the news agency IANS. His legacy is still being written, but its shape is clear. Jass Manak proved that the new Punjabi pop star could be a writer first: a teenager with a notebook who turned Prada into a national phenomenon and Lehanga into a global chart entry, all before turning 21\.
