Called the Jumping Jack for his energetic dancing, he headlined hits from Farz and Caravan to Himmatwala and Tohfa, and his family went on to build Balaji, one of India's biggest television and film houses. ## An Amritsar childhood and a chance break Jeetendra was born Ravi Kapoor in Amritsar, into a Punjabi Hindu family. His father Amarnath Kapoor ran a business supplying imitation jewellery to film studios, and the family moved to Bombay, where the boy studied at St. Sebastian's Goan High School alongside his friend Rajesh Khanna, who would become Hindi cinema's first superstar. Jeetendra's own break came by accident: while supplying jewellery to the filmmaker V. Shantaram, he was picked as a body double for the actress Sandhya in Navrang in 1959, and Shantaram later cast him as the hero of Geet Gaya Patharon Ne in 1964. The early films did not set the screen alight. For three years he waited, until the spy thriller Farz in 1967 turned him into an overnight star and gave him the white-shoed, dancing image that audiences loved. ## How did Jeetendra earn the name Jumping Jack? The name came from his dancing. In Farz and the musical hits that followed, Jeetendra danced with a bounce and energy unlike the gentle romantic heroes of the time, and film magazines dubbed him the Jumping Jack. Caravan in 1971, where he starred opposite Asha Parekh, became an all-time blockbuster overseas and the biggest foreign film in China that year, taking his face across Asia. Through the 1970s he was one of the most bankable stars in Bombay, in films such as Jeene Ki Raah, Humjoli, Bidaai, Dharam Veer and Aasha, of which Aasha became the biggest solo hit of his career. He also showed a quieter side in the director Gulzar's films Parichay, Khushboo and Kinara, which critics still rate among his finest performances. The numbers behind the career are remarkable even by Bombay standards. Of his more than 200 films, 121 were box-office successes, a hit rate few stars have matched, spread across spy thrillers, family dramas such as Bidaai, spectacles such as Dharam Veer and The Burning Train, and social dramas such as Khilona. Through it all he kept the boyish energy that had made Farz a sensation, working steadily decade after decade while bigger names came and went around him. ## The 1980s wave and later years When many stars of his generation faded, Jeetendra reinvented himself as the face of the big South Indian remakes of the 1980s, most of them opposite Sridevi or Jaya Prada, and the pairing became shorthand for the era. Himmatwala in 1983 made him and Sridevi the pair of the moment, and Tohfa in 1984 was the highest-grossing film of its year. He kept working through the 1990s in family dramas and supporting roles, with Rang in 1993 among his last major successes. In 2003 he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Screen lifetime achievement honour followed. His leading-man years had run from the 1960s to the 1990s, one of the longest such runs in Hindi cinema. He made his digital debut in the web series Baarish in 2020, playing a Gujarati diamond merchant, proof that the Amritsar boy who once doubled for a heroine was still in front of the camera six decades on. The run of hits maps the popular taste of those years: the costume spectacle Dharam Veer, the all-star disaster film The Burning Train, the revenge drama Jaani Dushman, the action films Meri Aawaz Suno and Farz Aur Kanoon, and later the police drama Thanedaar. Directors changed, heroines changed, decades changed; the white-shoed bounce stayed the same. ## Family and Balaji Jeetendra married Shobha Kapoor in 1974, his longtime girlfriend, who had worked as an air hostess. Their daughter Ekta Kapoor built Balaji Telefilms into the defining television production house of its era, and Jeetendra himself founded Balaji Motion Pictures in the early 2000s. Their son Tusshar Kapoor is also an actor.
