Deep was born on 10 December 1940 in Rangoon, then in British Burma, and was named Kuldeep Singh Matharu. His family's native village was Aitiana in Ludhiana district of Punjab, the village recorded in this Kosh as a Malwa village in Raikot tehsil with a population of 3,048 at the 2011 census. A detailed Ludhiana profile of the couple remembers him as a schoolboy known simply as Kuldeep at the village, a shy student who nevertheless grew into a gifted mimic: it says he could imitate anyone, and could make music with his mouth alone, without any instrument. Those two gifts, a melodious voice and a talent for comedy, became the twin pillars of his career. ## A missed interview and an offer from HMV The same Ludhiana profile tells the story of his break as a small accident of timing. After a diploma course at Sir Chhotu Ram Polytechnic Institute in Haryana, he travelled to Chandigarh in 1970 for a job interview and reached late. That evening he performed at a cultural function where a recording team from His Master's Voice was present. When he came down from the stage, the company's director, impressed by his voice and his flair for comedy, offered him a recording trip to Delhi on the spot. Wikipedia dates his first LP for His Master's Voice to 1969, with the song Nashean Naal Yaari, Roli Main Izzat Sari, so the profiles differ by a year on the first record, but they agree on the essentials: a folk singer spotted at a live function was taken straight into the HMV studios. ## Meeting Jagmohan Kaur K. Deep met the singer who would define his career at a cultural programme in Calcutta, where he had been invited to perform by a Punjabi society. Jagmohan Kaur, a former schoolteacher from Punjab who had given up her job for music, was there with a group of Giddha artistes. The profile of the couple says she was won over when the audience applauded his earthy comedy delivered in a melodious voice. They formed their own group, began performing together, and married on 2 February 1971, in what the sources describe as a love marriage. The couple had two children, a daughter, Gurpreet Kaur, known as Billy, and a son, Raja. ## Who were Mai Mohno and Posti? Mai Mohno and Posti were the comedy characters the couple played opposite each other: Jagmohan Kaur as the sharp tongued Mai Mohno and K. Deep as her partner Posti, trading songs and jokes as a married pair. Wikipedia credits them as the first Punjabi duo to record comedy on records, a step that took the village stage act into homes that had gramophones. Their records in character included Posti Canada Vich, Posti England Vich and Nave Puare Pai Gae, titles that already show the act travelling with the Punjabi diaspora. In the cassette era of the 1980s the Mai Mohno tapes became a phenomenon, and profiles written long afterwards note that they remained in demand. The act worked because it mixed melody with comedy rather than choosing between them, and because its material was the everyday life of Punjabi homes: money troubles, in-laws, weddings and travel abroad. Songs remembered from the duo include Bara Karara Poodna, Baba Ve Kala Maror, Paisa Hai Nahi Pale and Baitha Nim Thale Ni Jawai Tere Baap Da. Poodna, also named among their best known recordings, shows how a simple household word could become the hook of a hit in their hands. ## The first singer of Shiv Kumar Batalvi Behind the comedy stood a serious literary first. K. Deep is credited as the first singer to sing the songs of Shiv Kumar Batalvi, the most beloved Punjabi poet of his generation. Batalvi's lyrics were later taken up by singers of the stature of Jagjit Singh, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Ghulam Ali, but the first voice to carry them to record listeners was that of K. Deep. It is a reminder that the man audiences laughed with as Posti also served, early and directly, the finest Punjabi poetry of his time. ## World stages and the quiet years The couple's variety shows travelled wherever Punjabis had settled, with performances in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and the Ludhiana profile calls K. Deep the king of variety shows. He also worked behind the camera, making documentaries, and in later years he was preparing a documentary on Punjabis around the world, for which he had already travelled to 14 countries. After Jagmohan Kaur died on 6 December 1997, he stopped his stage performances. He settled for a time at Burnaby in British Columbia, Canada, with his daughter Billy, and father and daughter staged shows in North America and elsewhere in Jagmohan Kaur's memory. ## Honours, death and legacy In 2010 K. Deep received the PTC Lifetime Achievement Award, an honour he shared with the lyricist Babu Singh Maan and which was presented to him by Gurdas Maan. He died on 22 October 2020, aged 79, after a brief illness, as the ANI news agency reported from Ludhiana. His legacy is double: as one half of the duo that invented the recorded Punjabi comedy duet, a form every later stage pair has worked in, and as the first recording voice of Shiv Kumar Batalvi.
