## Early life in Gujranwala

Maharaja Ranjit Singh (13 November 1780 to 27 June 1839) was the founder of the Sikh Empire and its first Maharaja, ruling from Lahore from 1801 until his death. Known as Sher-e-Punjab, the Lion of Punjab, he united the warring Sikh misls into a single state that at its height stretched from the Khyber Pass in the west to the Sutlej River in the east, and from Kashmir in the north towards the Thar Desert in the south.

He was born in Gujranwala, in present day Pakistan, the only child of Maha Singh, chief of the Sukerchakia Misl, and his wife Raj Kaur. He was first named Buddh Singh, and his father changed the name to Ranjit, meaning victor in battle, after a victory over the Chattha chief Pir Muhammad. As an infant he caught smallpox, which cost him the sight of his left eye and left his face pockmarked. He fought beside his father from a young age, and when Maha Singh died in 1792, Ranjit Singh became chief of the Sukerchakia Misl at about twelve years old. Marriages into the Kanhaiya and Nakai misls, guided for a time by his formidable mother-in-law Sada Kaur, made him first among the Sikh chiefs.

## How did Ranjit Singh become Maharaja of Punjab?

Ranjit Singh became Maharaja by taking Lahore, the capital of Punjab, in July 1799 and then proclaiming himself Maharaja of Punjab on 12 April 1801\. The Afghan king Zaman Shah had confirmed him as governor of Lahore after the Afghan retreat, but at his formal investiture in Lahore Fort in 1801 he took the royal title for himself. He called his government Sarkar Khalsa, struck coins in the name of Guru Nanak, and ruled in the name of the Sikh commonwealth rather than in his own name alone. In 1802 he took Amritsar, the sacred city of the Sikhs and the greatest trading centre of northern India, and then steadily absorbed the smaller Sikh and Pashtun principalities around him.

## Building the Sikh Empire

The Treaty of Amritsar of 1809 fixed the Sutlej River as the boundary between Ranjit Singh and the British, so he turned his ambition north and west. His forces took Kangra in 1809 and the fort of Attock on the Indus in 1813\. In 1818 his armies captured Multan, ending Afghan influence in central Punjab, and entered Peshawar. In July 1819 he expelled the Afghan rulers from the Vale of Kashmir, and by 1820 he had consolidated his rule over the whole of Punjab between the Sutlej and the Indus. His general Zorawar Singh later carried his northern frontier into Ladakh in 1834, and in 1837 his army repulsed an Afghan counterattack on Peshawar, the last great confrontation of his reign.

Every stage of that expansion was won by Punjabi armies made up of Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus together. The empire he built was not a one community state: it was a Punjab state, held together by a shared army, a shared court at Lahore and a ruler who promoted talent from every community he governed.

## Court, army and a state for all Punjabis

From 1820 Ranjit Singh modernised his Khalsa army, employing European officers, many of them veterans of Napoleon's armies, to train his infantry and artillery to European standards. The modernised force fought well on the North West Frontier for the rest of his reign. His commanders and his cabinet ministers were drawn from Sikh, Muslim and Hindu families alike, and historians describe a ruler free from religious bigotry who was mild in his treatment of defeated adversaries.

His patronage crossed community lines in the same way. A devoted Sikh who restored historic gurdwaras, he also gave a tonne of gold in 1835 for the dome of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi, joined Hindus in their temples out of respect, and had mosques, temples and gurdwaras built or repaired across his kingdom. Prayers for his long life were offered in mosques, temples and gurdwaras on the day of his coronation, a small detail that captures how his court wanted the reign to be seen.

## What did Ranjit Singh do for the Harmandir Sahib?

Ranjit Singh rebuilt the Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar in marble and copper in 1809 and overlaid its sanctum with gold foil in 1830, giving the shrine the golden appearance from which its English name, the Golden Temple, comes. He had announced the renovation when he first paid homage there in 1802, after the shrine's repeated destruction by invading Afghan armies in the previous century. His sponsorship of Sikh shrines reached beyond his own borders too: the rebuilding of Takht Sri Patna Sahib and of Hazur Sahib at Nanded, both far outside his kingdom, was carried out under his patronage.

## Death and what followed

Ranjit Singh died at Lahore on 27 June 1839, aged 58, almost exactly forty years after he had first entered the city as a conqueror. He was succeeded by his son Kharak Singh. The state he had built rested heavily on his own judgement of people, and it did not long survive him: rival chiefs fell into internecine strife, the empire collapsed within a few years of his death, and Punjab passed under British rule, the last great region of India to do so.

## Why is Ranjit Singh called the Lion of Punjab?

Ranjit Singh is called the Lion of Punjab because he was the first Indian ruler in a thousand years to turn the tide of invasion back into the homelands of the Pashtun invaders who had entered India through Punjab for centuries. Instead of Punjab being raided from the Khyber Pass, his armies held the pass itself. His samadhi, where his cremated remains are kept, stands in Lahore near the fort from which he ruled. For Punjabis on both sides of the modern border, and across the diaspora, he remains the symbol of a united, self ruled Punjab: a one eyed, unlettered misl chief who built the strongest Indian state of his time and kept it at peace with itself for nearly four decades.
