Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 to 31 July 1980) was a playback singer from Kotla Sultan Singh, a village near Majitha in Amritsar district, Punjab. He sang for generations of Hindi film heroes and also recorded 262 songs for 105 Punjabi films, according to The Tribune.

## Early life

Rafi was born on 24 December 1924 in Kotla Sultan Singh, the second eldest of six brothers born to Allah Rakhi and Haji Ali Mohammad, according to Wikipedia. The village lies near Majitha town, about 30 km from Amritsar, according to Wikipedia and PTI reports. Census 2011 lists it in Amritsar-I tehsil with 1,200 people.

Nicknamed Pheeko, he studied at the village government elementary school and began singing by imitating the chants of a fakir who walked its lanes, Times of India reports. His father moved to Lahore in 1935 and ran a barber's shop, The Tribune says. Rafi sang Punjabi folk songs about lovers such as Heer-Ranjha and Mirza-Sahiban there, and learnt classical music from Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo and Firoze Nizami. The Tribune reports that his talent was first noticed in 1937, when K. L. Saigal heard him at a Lahore exhibition, and that Mattoo of All India Radio Lahore auditioned him in 1943.

## Career

Rafi made his playback debut in 1941 with the duet "Goriye Nee, Heeriye Nee", sung with Zeenat Begum for the Punjabi film Gul Baloch, released in 1944\. That year he moved to Bombay on the invitation of the actor-producer Nazeer. His first recorded Hindi film song was a duet for Gaon Ki Gori, composed by Shyam Sunder, and he began his long partnership with Naushad on "Hindustan Ke Hum Hain" in Pehle Aap.

Naushad's "Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki" in Dulari (1949) made him a household name, and Baiju Bawra (1952) cemented it, The Tribune writes. His voice bent to every star: S. D. Burman used him for Dev Anand and Guru Dutt, Shankar-Jaikishan for Shammi Kapoor, and Ravi gave him his first Filmfare Award, for the title song of Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960). He won six Filmfare Awards and one National Film Award. In 1977 he took both for "Kya Hua Tera Vada" from Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, composed by R. D. Burman, according to The Tribune.

Rafi stayed close to his roots. The Tribune reports that he often sang Punjabi songs for a token fee, and that after Partition he waived his fee for newcomer producers and for patriotic songs including "Watan Ki Raah Mein" from Shaheed (1948), the film that inspired Dharmendra to become an actor.

## Honours and personal life

According to The Tribune, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave him a silver medal on the first anniversary of Independence. He received the Padma Shri, which Wikipedia and Times of India date to 1967 and The Tribune to 1965\. Rafi did not drink or smoke, avoided film parties, and enjoyed badminton, carrom and flying kites.

## Death and legacy

Rafi died of a heart attack in Bombay on 31 July 1980, aged 55\. Wikipedia reports that he was buried at the Juhu Muslim cemetery, with more than 10,000 people attending, and that the government declared two days of public mourning. The Tribune notes that singers including Mahendra Kapoor, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam were inspired by his style.

In Kotla Sultan Singh, a memorial with his statue and an auditorium stand at a village school. Times of India reported in December 2024 that his 100th birth anniversary passed unnoticed there, and that villagers want a music academy and hospital in his name. Children's singing competitions are held in the village each year in his memory, PTI reports.
