Monty Panesar is a former England cricketer who bowled slow left-arm spin in a black patka and became one of the most loved English players of his generation. Born in Luton to a Punjabi Sikh family, he played 50 Test matches between 2006 and 2013 and took 167 wickets. His first wicket in Test cricket was Sachin Tendulkar, and his finest hours came on England's winning tour of India in 2012.

## A Punjabi childhood in Luton

Mudhsuden Singh Panesar was born on 25 April 1982 in Luton, Bedfordshire. His parents, Paramjit Singh and Gursharan Kaur, had migrated to England from Punjab in 1979, and he grew up in a Sikh household where cricket quickly became his passion. He bowled left-arm spin from a young age and studied computer science at Loughborough University while his game developed. Northamptonshire gave him his county break, and his accuracy, flight and tireless enthusiasm marked him out as an England prospect. In a team of many backgrounds, his patka made him instantly recognisable, and young British Sikhs saw one of their own in an England shirt.

## Nagpur 2006: a debut against the masters of spin

Panesar made his Test debut against India at Nagpur on 1 March 2006, on the very soil where his parents were born, and against the finest players of spin in world cricket. In India's first innings he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar leg before wicket, the dream first wicket for any young spinner, and added Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Kaif. He said afterwards that taking Tendulkar's wicket was something he would always remember. That summer he took his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket, 5 for 78 against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge, and finished England's player of the series against Pakistan.

## Monty mania and the Ashes

On his Ashes debut at Perth in December 2006, Panesar took five wickets in Australia's first innings, including Justin Langer and Andrew Symonds, and the Barmy Army took him to their hearts. Fans wore fake beards and patkas, and his wild celebrations and famously shaky fielding only added to the affection. Against West Indies at Old Trafford in 2007 he took 10 wickets in a match, the first English spinner to do so since Jim Laker's era was long past, and he was named one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year. With Harbhajan Singh leading India's spin and Panesar leading England's, two Sikhs stood at the centre of world cricket's spin story, following the great Bishan Singh Bedi.

## How did Monty Panesar save a Test match with the bat?

Panesar's batting was a running joke, yet it produced one of England's great escapes. In the first Ashes Test at Cardiff in July 2009, England were nine wickets down and still behind Australia's total with time running out. Panesar joined James Anderson and blocked for 69 balls over 40 minutes, finishing unbeaten on 7, as England held on for a draw that set up their series win. Crowds who had laughed at his fielding cheered every forward defensive stroke. The innings summed him up: limited in some skills, utterly wholehearted in effort.

## Losing his place and the triumph of 2012

Graeme Swann's rise pushed Panesar out of the side, and after a strong season with Sussex he returned as second spinner for the 2012 tour of India. There he bowled the spell of his career, taking 17 wickets in three Tests as England won 2-1, their first series victory in India for 28 years. He played his 50th and last Test at Melbourne in December 2013\. His final figures stand at 167 wickets in 50 Tests, plus 24 wickets in one-day internationals, a record that made him one of England's most successful left-arm spinners of the modern era.

## Speaking openly about mental health

After his England career faded, Panesar moved between Sussex, Essex and Northamptonshire, and later spoke with honesty about the paranoia and anxiety that had damaged his confidence at his lowest point. Talking to the BBC in 2016, he described how his confidence collapsed before he sought help, and he has since worked to encourage other players to speak about mental illness. He published his autobiography, The Full Monty, in 2019, and also worked as a spin-bowling consultant for Cricket Australia. In April 2024 he was announced as a parliamentary candidate for the Workers Party of Britain in Ealing Southall, but withdrew about a week later, saying he needed more time to listen and learn. Through fame, struggle and comeback, Panesar remains a landmark figure: proof that a boy from a Punjabi family in Luton could spin England to victory in India.
