Munir Niazi (9 April 1923 to 26 December 2006) was a poet from Hoshiarpur district in Punjab who wrote with equal pride in Punjabi and Urdu, published thirteen collections in Urdu and three in Punjabi, and became one of Pakistan's best loved film lyricists of the 1960s. His short, image filled poems, in both languages, are still quoted wherever Punjabi and Urdu poetry is read.

## Early life in Khanpur, Hoshiarpur

Munir Niazi was born on 9 April 1923 in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in British India, into a Punjabi speaking family of Niazi Pathans. Dawn and Radio Pakistan both give 1923, and that is the year followed here, although other sources, including obituaries published at his death, give 1926 or 1928 instead. Rekhta's profile gives his full name as Mohammad Munir Khan and his birthplace as Khanpur, a village in Hoshiarpur district, and he was first educated at Khanpur itself.

Partition in 1947 uprooted the family. They migrated to Pakistan and settled in Sahiwal, in West Punjab, where Munir passed his matriculation examination and met the noted poet Majeed Amjad, who became his mentor and friend. He went on to take an intermediate degree at Government Sadiq Egerton College in Bahawalpur and a BA at Dayal Singh College in Lahore.

## A weekly, a publishing house, and the radio years

Munir started in print early. In 1949, from Sahiwal, he launched a weekly called Seven Colours, or Saat Rang. In 1960 he set up his own publishing institute in Lahore, Al-Misal, and he wrote for newspapers, magazines and radio before becoming associated with Pakistan Television at Lahore. Publishing, broadcasting and poetry stayed intertwined for the rest of his working life: the journals paid for the poems, and the poems made his name.

## What did Munir Niazi write in Punjabi?

In Punjabi, Munir Niazi published three collections: Safar Di Raat, Char Chup Cheezan and Rasta Dassan Walay Tarey, the titles Radio Pakistan still lists when his death anniversary is marked. In Urdu he published thirteen collections, among them Taiz Hawa Aur Tanha Phool, Jungle Mein Dhanak, Dushmanon Ke Darmiyan Shaam and Mah-e-Munir, and his collected Urdu work later appeared as the Kulyat e Munir. In all, he published more than twenty books across the two languages.

His gift was compression. Critics note that his imagery builds a whole picture in a few words, and that he experimented with form, rhythm and diction rather than following the inherited shapes of the ghazal and the nazm. Innocence, mythology, nostalgia, dreams and romance run through the work in both languages: the lost Hoshiarpur of his childhood, and the Punjab he found again across the border, are never far away.

## The film songs that made him a household name

In the 1960s some of his poems were taken into films, and the songs became some of the most loved in Pakistani cinema. For Shaheed in 1962, Naseem Begum sang his Uss Bewafa Ka Shehar Hai Aur Hum Hain Dosto, to music by Rashid Attre. In the same year, for Susral, Mehdi Hassan sang Jis Ne Mere Dil Ko Dard Diya and Noor Jehan sang Jaa Apni Hasraton Pe Aansoo Baha Ke Sau Jaa. Mehdi Hassan returned to his words in Tere Shehar Mein in 1965, and Naheed Akhtar sang Zinda Rahein Tau Kya Hai in Kharidar in 1976\. Songs like these carried a literary poet's name into towns and villages that had never opened his books.

## Honours and later life

Pakistan honoured him in his lifetime. He received the Pride of Performance Award from the President of Pakistan in 1992, the Kamal-e-Fun lifetime achievement award from the Pakistan Academy of Letters in 2002, and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Sources differ on the Sitara year, giving both 1998 and 2005, so no single year is stated here. Selected English translations of his poems, edited by Suhail Safdar, had been published in 1996, carrying his work to readers beyond Punjabi and Urdu. He lived his last years in Lahore, the city where he had studied, published and broadcast.

## Death and legacy

Munir Niazi died in Lahore on 26 December 2006, the date his death anniversary is still marked in Pakistan every year. Sources differ on the cause, so none is stated here. He left behind a rare double legacy: a Punjabi poet of Hoshiarpur and Sahiwal who is also counted among the masters of the modern Urdu ghazal and nazm. A book of his interviews and memories, Munir Niazi Ki Baatain, Yadain, was later launched at the Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture in Lahore, and Radio Pakistan's anniversary reports still introduce him the same way: thirteen collections in Urdu, three in Punjabi, and a voice that belonged to both.
