Raised in Canada and launched from Mumbai, she built a two-decade career on the Jatt and Juliet films, Sardaar Ji, Laung Laachi, Shadaa and Kali Jotta, and now also directs and produces. ## Where is Neeru Bajwa from? Neeru Bajwa is from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, where she was born on 26 August 1980 to Indian immigrant parents Jaswant Bajwa and Surinder Bajwa. She grew up in Surrey with two sisters, Rubina, who also became an actor, and Sabrina, a clothing designer, and a brother, Suhail. Hers was a Punjabi immigrant household in the Vancouver suburbs, where Hindi films were part of family life and the glamour of Bollywood felt close even from thousands of miles away. School never held her. In the documentary Bollywood Bound, which followed young Canadians chasing film careers in India, she describes herself frankly as a high school dropout from L.A. Matheson Secondary School in Surrey who had little interest in studies. What she wanted was the movies, and as a teenager she made the boldest move available to her: she left Canada for Mumbai to try to get them. ## First steps in Hindi film and television Her screen career began in Hindi cinema in 1998, when she appeared as Tina in Dev Anand's Main Solah Baras Ki. A single early film did not make her a star, and like many newcomers she rebuilt her career through television. In the early 2000s she worked steadily in Hindi serials, including Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani, Jeet, Guns and Roses and Hari Mirchi Lal Mirchi, learning the craft in front of daily audiences. Television gave her discipline and visibility, but it was Punjabi cinema that gave her a home. In 2004 she made her Punjabi debut in Asa Nu Maan Watna Da, credited as Arshveer Bajwa. Jatt and Juliet in 2012 made Neeru Bajwa famous across the Punjabi world, but the road there ran through steady hits. She played Heer in Heer Ranjha, won audiences in Mel Karade Rabba (2010) and starred opposite Gippy Grewal and Jimmy Shergill in Jihne Mera Dil Luteya (2011), the campus romance that confirmed her as a leading lady and brought her PTC Punjabi Film Award recognition. Jatt and Juliet paired her with Diljit Dosanjh as Pooja, a sharp-tongued Punjab Police officer, and the pairing clicked instantly. The comedy became a landmark for the industry, and Jatt and Juliet 2 in 2013 broke previous opening day collection records for Punjabi cinema. Bajwa and Dosanjh became the defining screen pair of their generation, the combination producers reached for when they wanted a hit. ## Blockbusters, serious roles and recent work Through the 2010s she anchored one commercial success after another: Sardaar Ji (2015) with Dosanjh, Laung Laachi (2018), whose title song went on to become the first Indian song to pass one billion views on YouTube, and Shadaa (2019). Alongside the comedies she took on weightier parts. In Channo Kamli Yaar Di she played a pregnant woman travelling to Canada in search of the husband who abandoned her, a performance that showed a dramatic range the comedies had only hinted at. That range has carried her recent work. Kali Jotta (2023) placed her at the centre of a story about a woman teacher ground down by family and society, and Buhe Bariyan the same year cast her as a police officer, with Bajwa also producing. In Shayar (2024) she played Seero opposite Satinder Sartaaj in a poetic romance, and Jatt and Juliet 3 (2024) reunited her with Dosanjh to become the fastest Punjabi film to cross 100 crore rupees worldwide. She returned in Sardaar Ji 3 in 2025 and also appeared in the Hindi films Son of Sardaar 2 and Tehran that year. Her reach now extends beyond Indian cinema. In 2023 she made her Hollywood debut in It Lives Inside, the English-language supernatural thriller directed by Bishal Dutta. She played Poorna, the mother of Megan Suri's Samidha, in a story where an Indian family's immigrant experience collides with a demonic presence.
