He grew up between two sound worlds: the Punjabi folk records and bhangra of his home and community, and the hip hop that filled British youth culture in the 1980s. He began writing his own raps at about the age of twelve and was recording by his mid-teens, as he has recalled in interviews. He took his stage name from the Punjabi language itself, the language he raps and plays in, and he has often said that one of his main goals is to fuse the two worlds of bhangra and hip hop. That fusion, rather than a novelty crossover, became the working method of his whole career: Punjabi voices and folk instruments set over hip hop beats and famous basslines. ## How did Panjabi MC get his start? His break came through a remix. Rai reworked 'Ghariah Milan De', a song by the Punjabi folk singer Kuldeep Manak, cutting the folk vocal into a hip hop production. Ninder Johal of Nachural Records heard the remix and signed him. The single itself was taken off the market, but the signing held, and Panjabi MC spent the 1990s releasing a steady run of albums on the label. The early catalogue built his name across the British Asian scene: Souled Out (1993), Another Sell Out (1994), 100% Proof (1995), Grass Roots (1996) and Legalised (1998). The records ranged across jungle, UK garage and reggae as well as bhangra and hip hop, and AllMusic later described him as one of the most prominent names in bhangra. ## 'Mundian To Bach Ke' and the worldwide breakthrough 'Mundian To Bach Ke', which means 'Beware of the Boys', first appeared on Legalised in 1998\. Panjabi MC built the track in Birmingham around the bassline of the Knight Rider television theme, with dhol and tumbi on top and a Punjabi vocal sung by Labh Janjua; the lyric itself had earlier roots in a song originally written by Channi Singh. Passed around online, the track became an underground hit long before it was a chart record. The German label Superstar Recordings picked the song up and released it as a single on 25 November 2002\. It sold more than 100,000 copies in Germany in its first two days, reached number two there, reached number one in Italy and Wallonia, and in January 2003 it reached number five in the UK, the first bhangra song ever to make the UK top 10\. Later in 2003 a remix featuring the American rapper Jay-Z, retitled 'Beware of the Boys', reached number 33 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 10 in Canada and number 12 in Australia. Worldwide sales have been estimated at around 10 million copies, which would make it one of the best-selling singles of all time, though the Washington Post noted that bootlegged copies make an exact count impossible. Panjabi MC has recalled that Jay-Z heard the track in a club in Switzerland and contacted him directly, keen to rap over the beat, and that Jay-Z's verse first reached him as a voicemail message. The song's success also brought a long dispute over its rights between the artist and Nachural Records, a dispute both sides have discussed publicly in later years. ## Awards, films and later work The breakthrough year brought a shelf of honours: in 2003 he won Best Dance Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards, Best UK Act at the MOBO Awards, Best Single (Bhangra) at the UK Asian Music Awards and World's Best Indian Artist at the World Music Awards. The follow-up single 'Jogi' (2003) charted across Europe, and he kept releasing albums: Dhol Jageero Da (2001), Desi (2002), The Album, issued in the United States as Beware (2003), Steel Bangle (2005), Indian Timing (2008), The Raj (2010) and 56 Districts (2019). 'Moorni (Balle Balle)' won Best Single at the 2011 Brit Asia TV Music Awards, where he was also named Best Asian Music Producer, and in 2018 Brit Asia gave him its Outstanding Achievement award. His productions travelled into film and television. 'Mundian To Bach Ke' appeared in Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and, in its Jay-Z remix form, on the soundtrack of the BAFTA-nominated Netflix film The White Tiger (2021). With Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi he remixed 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' for Spike Lee's film Inside Man (2006), and his track 'Land of Five Rivers' became the entrance theme of the WWE wrestler The Great Khali. In a 2013 interview he described himself as a deliberately independent, bedroom-level producer, happy to license tracks to films rather than chase the mainstream. ## Legacy Before 'Mundian To Bach Ke', bhangra was largely a music of the South Asian diaspora, played at community events and on specialist radio. The record carried a Punjabi-language song, sung without compromise, into the charts of countries where most listeners understood none of the words. It opened doors for the British Asian producers who followed and remains the standard against which bhangra crossovers are measured. Panjabi MC is still based in the UK and continues to DJ, produce and perform internationally.
