Born in Firozpur in Punjab and raised in New Jersey, he became famous as the prosecutor who took on Wall Street insider trading, convicted corrupt politicians from both parties, and refused to resign when a new president demanded it, so the administration had to fire him. ## From Firozpur to New Jersey Preetinder Singh Bharara was born on 13 October 1968 in Firozpur, in the Malwa region of Punjab, to a Sikh father and a Hindu mother. In 1970 the family immigrated to the United States, and he grew up in Eatontown, New Jersey, becoming an American citizen at the age of 12\. He studied at Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude in 1990, and took his law degree at Columbia Law School in 1993, where he served on the Columbia Law Review. The boy from Ferozepur had reached the twin summits of American education, and a legal career in New York followed. ## Learning the prosecutor's trade Bharara began in private practice at the firms Gibson Dunn and Shereff Friedman, then in 2000 joined the very office he would one day lead, as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York. For five years he prosecuted organised crime, including cases against New York's Gambino and Colombo crime families, and narcotics and arms trafficking. In 2005 he moved to Washington as chief counsel to Senator Chuck Schumer, where he helped lead the Senate investigation into the controversial dismissal of US Attorneys by the Bush administration. The inquiry made his reputation for forensic, fearless staff work. ## The sheriff of Wall Street President Barack Obama nominated Bharara as US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and he was sworn in on 13 August 2009\. The district covers Manhattan and the Bronx, and with it, Wall Street. Bharara's office used wiretaps, tools borrowed from mafia cases, against insider trading networks, and convicted hedge fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam on all 14 counts in the Galleon case. His office shut down hedge funds, won a record 1.8 billion dollar settlement from SAC Capital, and took a 1.7 billion dollar forfeiture from JPMorgan over its role in the Madoff fraud. Time magazine put him on its cover with the words This Man is Busting Wall Street, and named him one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2012. ## How did Preet Bharara take on the powerful? He treated status as no defence. His office prosecuted Democratic and Republican politicians alike for corruption, including senior figures in New York State's government in Albany. His prosecutors convicted members of four of New York's five mafia families, pursued terrorists and cyber criminals, and after a 2013 Russian money-laundering investigation, Moscow banned him from entering Russia for life, a sanction he wore as a badge of honour. Critics argued he was aggressive and media-conscious; supporters answered that for the first time in a generation, the law had reached people who believed themselves untouchable. ## The firing that made headlines When Donald Trump became president in 2017, his Attorney General asked all 46 remaining Obama-appointed US Attorneys to resign. Bharara refused. On 11 March 2017 he was dismissed, announcing it himself and making his removal the story: the prosecutor fired for declining to quit. The stand cemented his public standing as a defender of prosecutorial independence. He later became a distinguished scholar in residence at New York University School of Law, launched the podcast Stay Tuned with Preet, co-founded the Cafe Studios media company, and wrote the bestselling book Doing Justice (2019), part memoir and part argument for how the law should work. ## Back in practice, still in public life In June 2022 Bharara joined the international law firm WilmerHale as a partner in New York, working on internal investigations, government matters and crisis management, and he remains a legal analyst and one of the most followed commentators on American justice.
