She made her debut in the title role of Sargi (2017), a film directed by her sister, won the PTC award for best female debut, and has since carried films of her own, from Laavaan Phere to Buhe Bariyan. ## A Vancouver childhood, a Mumbai training Rubina Bajwa was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, to Jaswant Bajwa and Surinder Bajwa, and grew up there immersed in Punjabi culture alongside her siblings Sabrina and Suhail and her elder sister Neeru. Before acting she studied early-childhood education and special needs. When she decided to follow Neeru into films, she came to India to shadow her sister in the industry and trained at Anupam Kher's Actor Prepares academy in Mumbai. The family's Vancouver home stayed her base even as her working life moved to Punjab and Mumbai. The preparation mattered. A famous surname may open the first door, but it cannot do the work for you, and Bajwa arrived on set trained rather than entitled. It is a distinction she has had to draw ever since. Vancouver's Punjabi community is one of the oldest in the diaspora, and Bajwa grew up watching its stories from a distance before deciding to go and tell them herself. ## Sargi: a debut directed by her sister Sargi, released in 2017, was a romantic drama directed and produced by Neeru Bajwa, with Rubina in the title role as a young woman caught in a love triangle with Jassi Gill and Babbal Rai. The title role meant the film rose or fell on her: sargi is the traditional gift a family gives at a wedding, and Bajwa's character carried the film's emotion from the first scene to the last. The debut could hardly have carried more pressure, and it worked: Bajwa won the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Female Debut and was nominated in the same category at the Filmfare Awards Punjabi. ## How did Rubina Bajwa step out of her sister's shadow? By working constantly and choosing range over comfort. In 2018 she led the family comedy Laavaan Phere opposite Roshan Prince, playing Neetu, and made a special appearance in Aate Di Chidi. Then came a remarkable 2019: four films in a single year, the romantic drama Laiye Je Yaarian as Jaanpreet, the social satire Munda Hi Chahida as Rani, the ensemble drama Gidarh Singhi as Simmi, and a special appearance in Dil Diyan Gallan. Four releases in a year is a pace few leading ladies in any Indian industry attempt. The pattern continued through Parauneya Nu Dafa Karo (2020), Good Luck Jatta with Ninja, held back by the pandemic and released in 2021, and Teri Meri Gal Ban Gayi (2022) opposite the singer Akhil. In Beautiful Billo (2022), a ZEE5 comedy, she played Sonika opposite Neeru herself, the sisters finally sharing the frame in a comedy of mistaken identities. Music videos kept her in the charts between films: Babbal Rai's Rondhi Tere Layi in 2017, Gippy Grewal's 28 Kille in 2018 and Jordan Sandhu's Peacock in 2019. As the filmography grew, the sister tag faded, replaced by a reputation for reliability across comedy and drama. It also made her one of the busiest Punjabi actresses of her generation. ## Leading lady and foundation work In Buhe Bariyan (2023) Bajwa played Kammi in an all-female principal cast alongside Neeru Bajwa and the veteran Nirmal Rishi, in a drama built around the women of one household. She returns as Neetu in Laavaan Phere 2, now in post-production. Away from the screen she serves as a board member of The Chahal Foundation, which works on child protection, education access, food security and emergency response, running campaigns on trafficking rescue, safe housing and mentorship, work her own training in early-childhood education prepared her for. For an actress who once studied how young children learn and feel safe, the foundation work is not a sideline but a second vocation. ## Marriage and family On 26 October 2022 Bajwa married the entrepreneur Gurbaksh Chahal in a private Anand Karaj ceremony in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Their son, Gurbaksh Singh Chahal Jr, known as Veer, was born on 15 November 2024\.
