The 7 foot 2 inch centre from a farming family later played for the Texas Legends and Canada's St. John's Edge, and since 2021 he has wrestled for All Elite Wrestling in the United States. ## Early life in Baloke Satnam Singh Bhamara was born on 10 December 1995 in Baloke, a small village in Tapa tehsil of Barnala district in the Malwa region of Punjab, also written Ballo Ke or Balloke in English reports. His father, Balbir Singh, and his paternal grandfather were wheat farmers and millers, and his mother is Sukhwinder Kaur. Height ran in the family: his father, himself exceptionally tall, had played basketball, and he introduced his son to the game, mounting a hoop in a dirt courtyard near the house. Satnam grew up with two siblings, his sister Sarabjot Kaur and his brother Beant Singh. At nine years old he already stood 5 feet 9 inches, taller than most adults in the village, and local spectators gave the fast growing boy the ironic nickname Chhotu, meaning little one, because the basketball seemed to shrink in his hands. At the age of ten, with the help of his father's friend Rajinder Singh, he enrolled at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy in Ludhiana, where he first learned the game's skills and drills in a structured setting. ## How did a boy from Baloke reach the NBA draft? The road out of Baloke ran through Ludhiana and then Florida. Satnam led the Punjab state youth team to a national championship in June 2010, and the Basketball Federation of India sent him to an NBA Basketball Without Borders camp in Singapore. Troy Justice, who directed basketball operations for the NBA in India, first saw him at the NBA Mahindra Challenge, playing in shoes that were falling apart because he was growing out of them so fast. In September 2010, aged 14, Satnam moved to Bradenton, Florida, on a full scholarship at IMG Academy, one of 29 Indian student athletes chosen under the IMG Reliance programme. He arrived knowing no English. At IMG he developed into a genuine prospect. In the 2014 to 2015 season he averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in under 20 minutes a game for one of the top ranked school teams in the United States. He had already played for India: at 13 he appeared at the 2009 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship in Malaysia, and he made his senior national team debut at the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, returning for the 2013 edition. When he did not academically qualify for American college basketball, he entered the NBA draft directly. On 25 June 2015, at the draft in Brooklyn, the Dallas Mavericks selected him with the 52nd overall pick. He became the first Indian-born player ever drafted into the NBA, and the first player since the 2005 draft to be chosen without playing in college, overseas professionally, or in the NBA Development League. ## Texas Legends and the years after the draft Being drafted was the summit, not the destination. Satnam joined Dallas for the 2015 NBA Summer League, and on 31 October 2015 he was acquired by the Texas Legends, the Mavericks' development league affiliate. He made his professional debut on 13 November 2015 against the Austin Spurs, scoring four points with three rebounds in nine minutes. Across 19 games that season he averaged 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds, with a season best of six points and six rebounds as a starter against Raptors 905 in February 2016\. The Legends brought him back for 2016 to 2017, and he played for Dallas again in the 2017 Summer League. In January 2017 his journey reached a worldwide audience when Netflix released One in a Billion, a one hour documentary on his background and path to the NBA. In November 2017 he signed with the UBA Pro Basketball League in India, and in September 2018 he joined the St. John's Edge of the National Basketball League of Canada, arriving late after visa problems that were resolved with help from Canadian and Indian officials. He played for the Edge through 2019\. In July 2019 the Mavericks traded his draft rights, with two second round picks, to the Memphis Grizzlies, although he never played an NBA regular season game. In 2020 India's National Anti-Doping Agency gave him a two year ban after he tested positive for higenamine, a substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list. ## A second career in the wrestling ring Satnam's size opened a second door. On 23 September 2021, All Elite Wrestling announced his signing, billing him at 7 feet 3 inches, and sent him to train at the Nightmare Factory in Atlanta. He made his televised debut on the 13 April 2022 episode of AEW Dynamite, attacking Samoa Joe and aligning himself with Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt. In August 2024, teaming with Raj Dhesi at Triplemania in Mexico City, he won the AAA World Tag Team Championship, his first title in wrestling. The titles were vacated in March 2025\. He also appears for AEW's sister promotion, Ring of Honor, and on the independent circuit. ## Legacy Satnam Singh never played a regular season NBA game, and his basketball statistics are modest. His place in Indian sport rests on something else: he proved that the draft, the highest door in world basketball, could open for a boy from a Barnala village with no basketball court, torn shoes and no English. Every Indian player who has aimed at the NBA since 2015 has walked a path he was the first to complete, from the Ludhiana academy courts to an American draft night. His village of Baloke, population 1,303 at the 2011 census, remains on the sporting map because of him. ## People [The Great KhaliProfessional Wrestler](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/the-great-khali/) ## Places [ਬBalokeVillage, Malwa](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/barnala/baloke/)[BarnalaCity, Malwa](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/barnala/) ## More sports [See all →](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/sports/) * [Gurpreet Singh SandhuFootballer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/gurpreet-singh-sandhu/) * [Abhinav BindraIndian Shooter](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/abhinav-bindra/) * [Harmanpreet KaurCricketer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/harmanpreet-kaur/) * [Shubman GillCricketer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/shubman-gill/) * [Arshdeep SinghCricketer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/arshdeep-singh/) Sources (3) 1.
