School was a luxury the household could not afford, and he has said plainly that he never attended one. From childhood he worked wherever work was found: at tea stalls and sweet shops, in factories including one that made slippers, and on the street selling kulfi and vegetables to help the family get by. He has told the story of those years himself on Maniesh Paul's podcast. Tea was not even made in his own home, yet he earned his living making it for others, carrying five or six cups in one hand and a kettle in the other, walking barefoot into factories to serve it, and slipping away to a corner to drink a cup himself. He calls selling vegetables his practical acting workshop, because calling out to customers and reading their faces taught him performance long before any stage did. He still says he misses the schooling he never had, and jokes that his uncertain English once cost him money when he asked for fifteen thousand rupees while meaning fifty thousand. ## How did a wedding orchestra singer reach national television? Lehri loved singing, and Punjab's wedding orchestras gave him his first stage. Singing at weddings and functions, he began imitating the announcers on the microphone and the great playback singers, and audiences started asking for the mimicry as much as the songs. By his own account he was soon doing dozens of shows at around a thousand rupees a show. He recorded Punjabi comedy audio and video albums, performed in regional stage shows, and built a name across Punjab, along with the home and stability the orchestra years had once seemed too distant to promise. Films in Punjab came alongside the stage work, among them Ghuggi Chhoo Mantar in 2004, Wagah in 2007 and Hashar in 2008\. But Punjab was a ceiling as well as a home: he recalls being told by a man connected with the laughter shows in Mumbai that nobody beyond Punjab knew his name. In 2007 he entered the third season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Star One, the contest that was remaking Indian stand-up, and finished as second runner-up behind winner Kapil Sharma and Chandan Prabhakar. The boy who had never been to school was suddenly a face in living rooms across India. ## The Krushna-Sudesh years on Comedy Circus In 2008 Lehri joined Comedy Circus, and the show paired him with Krushna Abhishek. The pairing became the franchise's signature act: Bollywood parodies, character sketches and a running on-stage slap routine that audiences waited for each week. Together, as the duo fans simply called Krushna-Sudesh, they won three seasons of the show, an almost unheard of run in a format built on novelty. His seasons on the franchise stretched from 2008 to 2014, through edition after edition, and made him a permanent fixture of weekend television. The duo carried their chemistry from show to show. In Comedy Classes, from 2014 to 2016, they played comic characters inside a fictional acting school alongside Bharti Singh and Shakeel Siddiqui. From 2015 to 2017 Lehri co-hosted and performed on Comedy Nights Bachao, the roast-format show on Colors TV, and he also appeared on Comedy Nights Live in 2016 and The Drama Company in 2017 and 2018\. For a full decade, it was hard to switch on an Indian comedy show and not find him on it. ## Films in Punjabi and Hindi Television made him famous, but films in two languages ran beside it throughout. His Punjabi work includes Wagah, Hashar, Akhiyaan Udeekdian, Panjaban, Simran and Welcome to Punjab, and later Tara Mira and Ardab Mutiyaran in 2019, where he played Bittu Bansal. These were home-ground roles, played in the language and the comic idiom he grew up inside, for the audience that had known him since the orchestra days. In Hindi films he became a familiar supporting presence, the comic specialist called in for a handful of scenes that needed a guaranteed laugh. In 2017, during The Drama Company, Lehri and Krushna Abhishek fell out, reportedly over the show being presented as Krushna's alone, and the two stopped communicating beyond work. The split ended one of television's most reliable partnerships, and for four years the pair who had won three seasons together did not share a stage. Time closed the gap. In 2021 the two reunited as Lehri joined the cast of The Kapil Sharma Show, performing sketch roles alongside Kapil Sharma and Krushna. Announcing the reunion, Krushna said that whatever he had learnt about comedy was because of Sudeshji, a public acknowledgement from the younger partner of who the senior man in the act had always been. Lehri's later television includes the cooking comedy series Laughter Chefs: Unlimited Entertainment in 2024 and 2025, and in 2025 he appeared with his wife Mamta on the reality series Pati Patni Aur Panga. ## Style, family and legacy Lehri's comedy is musical, physical and character driven, rooted in mimicry and in the voices of ordinary Punjab: the vegetable seller's cry, the wedding singer's flourish, the announcer's boom. Where trained actors learned observation in classrooms he never entered, he learned it at tea stalls and factory gates, and that ground level eye is what audiences recognise in his characters. His Punjabi lilt and cheerfully broken English, which he jokes about himself, became signatures rather than obstacles. He is married to Mamta Lehri, and the couple have two children. His legacy in Indian comedy is the route itself as much as the roles: from Jalandhar's streets to Punjab's wedding stages to a decade at the centre of Hindi television comedy, alongside fellow Punjabis such as Kapil Sharma and Bharti Singh who were remaking the form in the same years.
