His debut album New Stylee (1996) won three Channel V Awards and carried Punjabi pop to a global audience. ## Early life in Nairobi Sukhbir Singh was born on 9 November 1969 in [Bhogpur](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/bhogpur/), [Jalandhar](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/jalandhar/) district, Punjab. When he was two years old, his parents migrated to Nairobi, Kenya, where he was raised; he would spend twenty years there. His father was a gyaniji at a Nairobi gurdwara and a classically trained singer, and the family lived in the gurdwara on barely the necessities of life. Music surrounded him anyway. His brother played tabla, and Sukhbir learned instruments in a Kenyan band, moving from keyboards to drums to guitar before he became a singer. In those early days he sang in nine languages, from Punjabi and Hindi to Swahili, starting out at birthday parties and restaurants. He had always wanted to be a pilot and even took flying lessons toward a licence. ## How did New Stylee make him the Prince of Bhangra? Sukhbir began recording in 1991 and moved to Dubai in 1992, where he has been based ever since. His debut album New Stylee (1996), recorded in Dubai with strong foreign influences, was the breakthrough: it won the 1996 Channel V Awards in three categories, Best Debut Album, Best Male Vocalist and Best Music Video (for 'Punjabi Munde'), and was released simultaneously in India, South Africa and the Middle East. It was followed by Gal Ban Gayi (1997), which went platinum, then Hai Energy (1999) and Dil Kare (2001). The party-ready fusion of [bhangra](https://jugti.com/kosh/words/bhangra/) with rap, techno and reggae gave him the enduring title 'Prince of Bhangra'. ## The sound: bhangra goes electronic Sukhbir is a true multi-instrumentalist: vocals, tabla, [dholak](https://jugti.com/kosh/words/dhol/), electric and bass guitar, bongos, harmonium, drum kit, piano, violin and saxophone. His productions keep the [dhol](https://jugti.com/kosh/words/dhol/) and dholak up front while layering electronic dance beats, reggae grooves and rap rhythms over them; on Oi Triesto he added Spanish and Portuguese flavours. He wrote the lyrics for 'Punjabi Munde' and 'Gal Ban Gayi' himself, preferring creative control over his hits. Signature songs include 'Ishq Tera Tadpave', known by its 'Oh Ho Ho Ho' hook and a wedding and party staple across the diaspora, 'Punjabi Munde', 'Gal Ban Gayi', 'Tere Naal Nachna', 'Ni Hogaya', 'Sauda Khara Khara' and 'O Balle Balle'. ## Bollywood years Bollywood came calling early. He sang 'Dil Laga Na' for Dhoom 2 (2006), and his classics found second lives on screen: 'Oh Ho Ho Ho' in Hindi Medium (2017), 'Sauda Khara Khara' in Good Newwz (2019), 'Billi Billi' and 'O Balle Balle' in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023), and 'Punjabi Munde' in Ghudchadi (2024). He made a guest appearance as himself in the 2012 Punjabi film Pata Nahi Rabb Kehdeyan Rangan Ch Raazi, and after the 2004 tsunami he recorded a charity song with Jassi Sidhu, Shin, DCS and Taz of Stereo Nation. ## Personal life Sukhbir is married, with twins born in 2004-05, a son Kabir and a daughter Kiran. He holds Kenyan citizenship and is based in Dubai, where his best-known accessory is his sunglasses: he has said no one recognises him without them, which suits him and his wife just fine. He composed, recorded and released a spiritual album, Nirgun Raakh Liya (2009), dedicated to his father, and persuaded his friend [Akshay Kumar](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/akshay-kumar/) to sing its title shabad, the actor's first song. ## What is Sukhbir doing now? He performs around five shows a month, mostly outside Dubai, and appeared at a major 2025 event in Udaipur alongside Jennifer Lopez and DJ Tiësto. Beyond music he has become an angel investor in Indian startups, including the beverage company LQI and the electric-vehicle startup eBikeGo. He has also become a brand ambassador for Language Curry, an app for learning Indian languages. He speaks often about keeping lyrics clean: he has said he always refrained from objectionable lyrics and does not think it impossible to move listeners with clean, meaningful words.
