He has won a National Film Award and two Filmfare awards for playback singing. ## Early life Sukhwinder Singh was born on 18 July 1971 in Amritsar, into a Sikh family. "I was born in Amritsar," he told Hindustan Times in 2023, remembering Lohri mornings when the sky filled with thousands of kites and he flew them from the terrace for hours. Music reached him through the gurdwara. In interviews he has said he began singing at the age of seven or eight, and that people first heard his voice in Gurbani. As a boy he went to Darbar Sahib, the Golden Temple, to sing shabads, and he describes the atmosphere there as having become his mother and father. He also ran sprints in his youth before music took over, and trained under the Punjab-based musician B. S. Narang. ## Career As a teenager he released the Punjabi album Munda Southhall Da with T. Singh. He then caught the attention of the composer duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal, working for them as a music arranger and singing chorus lines and short passages on their projects. His early credits include a share of "Chitthi Aayi Hai" in Naam (1986) and the solo "Aaja Sanam" in Khilaaf (1991). The turn came with A. R. Rahman. Sukhwinder sang "Lucky Lucky" in the Tamil film Ratchagan (1997), then "Chaiyya Chaiyya" in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se.. (1998), picturised on Shah Rukh Khan and his co-stars dancing on top of a moving train. The song, written by Gulzar and sung as a duet with Sapna Awasthi, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and made him a household name across India. Hit after hit followed, among them "Dard-e-Disco" in Om Shanti Om, "Chak De India" and "Haule Haule" in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), which brought a second Filmfare award.
