In short

Sultan Bahu (1630 to 1691) was a Punjabi Sufi poet, scholar and mystic of Shorkot in Jhang district whose Punjabi couplets, the Abyat, are among the most quoted verses in the language. Founder of the Sarwari Qadiri branch of the Qadiri order, he wrote dozens of Persian books, but his fame rests on plain Punjabi lines that end, again and again, on a name of God: Hu.

Sultan Bahu (17 January 1630 to 1 March 1691) was a Punjabi Sufi poet, scholar and mystic of Shorkot in Jhang district, in the Punjab of the Mughal emperors Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. He wrote dozens of books in Persian, but his lasting fame rests on his Punjabi verse, the Abyat: short, piercing couplets in which nearly every line ends with the word Hu, a name of God, and which Punjab has sung ever since.

## Early life in Shorkot

Bahu was born in Shorkot, in present day Jhang district, into the Awan tribe. His father, Bayazid Muhammad, was an officer in the Mughal army. His mother, Mai Rasti, was herself remembered as a spiritually enlightened woman, and the tradition gives her the first place in his story: she was his first teacher, and it was she who pushed him to seek a spiritual guide. Little else is known of his life with certainty. Most of what is told of him comes from Manaqib-i Sultani, a hagiography written by one of his descendants seven generations after his death, and honest accounts of Bahu begin by admitting that gap.

That gap matters less than it might, because Bahu left his real biography in his teaching. He presents himself not as a court scholar but as a seeker who found book learning empty on its own: read thousands of books and scholars grow heavy with pride, runs one of his best known couplets, yet they never learn the single letter of love.

## Teachers and the Sarwari Qadiri path

Guided first by his mother, Bahu sought instruction from Shah Habib Gilani, and around 1668 he travelled to Delhi for further training under Syed Abdul Rehman Jilani Dehlvi, a noted saint of the Qadiriyya order. He then returned to Punjab and spent the rest of his life there. He looked beyond his living teachers as well: in his books he names Abdul Qadir Jilani, the founder of the Qadiriyya who had died centuries before him, as his spiritual master.

Within that Qadiri inheritance Bahu founded a branch of his own, the Sarwari Qadiri. Its teaching, as his verses state it, is unsparing: the self must die before death, outward show in religion is worthless, and the seeker needs a true guide, a murshid, because the road inward cannot be walked on pride. Folk Punjab's account of his poetry puts it plainly: he was against the show of religiosity and piety, and the tone of his verse is melancholy, always pressing the reader to look inside.

## What makes Sultan Bahu's poetry different?

One word does. In the Abyat, his Punjabi couplets, almost every line ends in Hu, meaning He, a name of God. The device was an innovation in Punjabi poetry, and it turns each couplet into a small act of remembrance: whatever the line has said about pride, love, death or the guide, it lands on the same final syllable, like a heartbeat. His most famous opening works the same way with the alphabet itself: Alif Allah chambe di booti, Alif, Allah is like a jasmine plant, which my murshid planted in my heart, Hu.

The style is deliberately plain. His verse is composed in a simple, unpretentious Punjabi, with no artificiality, drawing its force from thought rather than ornament. Its great themes are few and deep: die before you die, distrust the scholars who mistake books for knowledge, find the guide, and look for God not in distant places but inside the body and the heart, where, one couplet insists, the water of immortality already is. Tradition has even fixed a particular style of singing his couplets, used for no other poet, and his verses are sung in qawwali and kafi to this day, by singers including [Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/nusrat-fateh-ali-khan/).

## Books in Persian, fame in Punjabi

More than forty books on Sufism and Islamic mysticism are attributed to Bahu, and some counts of his works run far higher. Almost all are in Persian, the scholarly language of his world, and they deal with specialised questions of the Sufi path. Titles that survive include Risala e Ruhi, Nur ul Khuda, Aql e Baidar, Mahq ul Faqr, Ain ul Faqr, Kashf ul Israr and Ganj ul Israr, alongside his Punjabi Diwan.

Yet it was the one Punjabi work, the Abyat e Bahu, that carried his name into ordinary homes. The Persian books spoke to initiates. The couplets spoke to everyone, in the language of the field and the village, and they are the reason a seventeenth century scholar of Jhang is a household name in Punjab while many more learned contemporaries are footnotes. In English, his Punjabi poems reached modern readers through Jamal J. Elias's edition, Death Before Dying: The Sufi Poems of Sultan Bahu, published by the University of California Press.

## Shrine at Garh Maharaja and the urs

Bahu died on 1 March 1691 at Jhang. His shrine stands at Garh Maharaja in Jhang district, near Ahmedpur Sial, though not where it first stood: the Chenab River changed its course and the shrine had to be moved twice, with the present structure rebuilt in 1918\. It remains one of the great spiritual centres of the region, drawing devotees in very large numbers.

His annual urs is held there with great fervour on the first Thursday of the month of Jumada al-Thani, with gatherings for prayer, remembrance and the recitation of the Abyat. A second tradition he began himself also continues: in his lifetime Bahu held an annual observance for the martyrs of Karbala through the first ten days of Muharram, and pilgrims still visit the shrine in that period every year.

## Legacy

Sultan Bahu stands with Shah Hussain and Bulleh Shah in the line of Punjabi Sufi poets whose verses became the moral vocabulary of a whole people. Where Hussain gave Punjab the kafi, Bahu gave it a discipline of looking inward, compressed into couplets a ploughman could carry in memory. Three centuries on, his Alif still opens collections of Punjabi poetry, his couplets still close arguments about pride and love, and the last word of his lines is still the word he chose: Hu.
