He became known first as the lyricist behind Kulbir Jhinjer songs such as College Di Yaad, co-founded his own label Vehli Janta Records in 2013, and then led the hit film Rabb Da Radio, which made him a screen star as well. ## Early life and education Tarsem Singh Jassar was born on 4 July 1986 in the village of [Jassar](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/ludhiana/jassar/) in Ludhiana district, Punjab, into a Sikh family; his father is a farmer. Writing came early: he sang kavishri in his school days and was writing poetry by his college years. The village gave him his surname, his subject matter and the rural Punjab voice that runs through his songs. He studied at Mata Gujri College in [Fatehgarh Sahib](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/fatehgarh-sahib/), where he completed a BSc and met his closest collaborator, Kulbir Jhinjer. He began a masters degree, left it part way, and completed a PGDCA instead. After college he spent time in England working as a labourer, an experience of distance from home that Punjabi listeners would soon hear in his writing. ## How did Tarsem Jassar become famous? He became famous first as a lyricist, not as a singer. His words for Kulbir Jhinjer, beginning with the Vehli Janta songs in 2012 and then College Di Yaad in 2013, became huge hits and made his name as a writer. College Di Yaad, a song of student days and separation, remains the breakthrough: Jhinjer sang it, Jassar wrote it, and Punjab memorised it. His own singing debut, Attwadi in 2014, was not passed by the censor board for television, but the setback did not stop him. Galwakdi, released in 2016, brought him wide recognition as a singer. As a songwriter he also wrote Patiala Shahi Pagg for Jhinjer, the song that put the Patiala shahi turban back at the centre of youth style. In 2013 the two friends had already taken control of their own work by launching their label, Vehli Janta Records. ## Albums and Vehli Janta Records His studio albums, all on Vehli Janta Records, trace a steady build: Illuminati in 2016, Turbanator in 2018, My Pride in 2020 and New Order in 2024\. Between them came the EPs DeFcoN.1 and Enigma, both in 2022 and both made with producer Wazir Patar, and the EP 4 Shots in 2025\. The Turbanator title summed up the image he had built: the turban as pride, not costume. Jassar built Vehli Janta as a home for his own writing and for artists around him, and he has described himself as an entrepreneur at heart, a businessman as much as a performer. ## Film career: from Rabb Da Radio to Guru Nanak Jahaz Jassar made his acting debut in 2017 as Manjinder Singh in Rabb Da Radio, a family drama set in the Punjab of the 1980s and 1990s, and won the Filmfare Award Punjabi for Best Debut Actor. The same year he played the title role in Sardar Mohammad, for which he also wrote the screenplay. A cameo in Daana Paani and the lead in Afsar followed in 2018, then Uda Aida and Rabb Da Radio 2 in 2019, returning to the role that had made him. His later films widened the range: the comedies Galwakdi, Maa Da Ladla and Khaao Piyo Aish Karo in 2022, the period action drama Mastaney in 2023, and Guru Nanak Jahaz in 2025, in which he played Mewa Singh Lopoke in the story of the Komagata Maru voyage. Rabb Da Radio 3 followed in 2026, with Jassar in a new lead role in the series that began his screen career. ## Legacy Tarsem Jassar's career is a study in building rather than waiting. He entered as a writer for another singer, turned that writing into a label he co-owns, turned the label into a singing career, and turned the singing career into leading film roles, including historical parts that ask more of an actor than stardom alone. His turbaned image and his own song Patiala Shahi Pagg, written before he was famous as a singer, are credited by fans with restoring the pagg to pride of place among young Sikhs.
