Fifth-generation musicians, they took the kafis of Bulleh Shah and Baba Farid and the shabads of gurbani to concert halls and Hindi films, and sang together until Pyarelal's death in 2018. ## Early life Guru Ki Wadali lies about seven kilometres from Amritsar and was known for its gurdwaras before the brothers put it on the musical map, the Indian Express wrote. They came from a family of musicians who had sung the messages of Sufi saints for five generations. Puranchand, the elder, spent some 25 years as a wrestler in the village akhara. Pyarelal helped the family income by playing Krishna in the village ramleela. Their father, Thakur Das Wadali, pushed Puranchand towards music, and he learnt from Pandit Durga Das and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the Patiala gharana. Pyarelal was trained by Puranchand, whom he treated as his guru. ## Career Their break came in 1975\. The brothers went to Jalandhar for the Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan but, in simple cotton kurta pyjamas, were reportedly refused the stage. They sang at the Harballabh temple instead, where an All India Radio official heard them and recorded their first song. By the Indian Express's account they began as musicians in their thirties and became popular only in their fifties. The pairing worked because the voices differed. Puranchand's trained, improvising voice was relatively coarse, while Pyarelal had a clear timbre. They sang the kafis of Bulleh Shah, Baba Farid and Amir Khusrau, the poetry of Amrita Pritam, gurbani, ghazal and bhajan, with few instruments. Their renditions of Bulleh Shah's "Ghunghat Chak O Sajna" and "Charkha" and Khusrau's "Dama Dam Mast Qalandar" were especially well known. Pakistani singer Javed Bashir said the way they worked Hindustani classical elements into Sufi poetry was beautifully done. ## What music did the Wadali Brothers sing? The brothers sang in the gurbani, kafi, ghazal and bhajan genres, moving between the Sikh devotional tradition and the Sufi poetry of Punjab in the same concert. Alongside Bulleh Shah, Baba Farid and Amir Khusrau, their repertoire took in the verses of Kabir and the poetry of Amrita Pritam, and listeners in Pakistan as well as India claimed them as their own. They described themselves as a medium through which the teaching of the saints reached other people, and they kept their recorded output small on purpose. Most of their recordings come from live concerts rather than studios. They sang with few instruments, leaned on alap and taans, and held that spiritual heights could only be reached by singing unreservedly, in a free atmosphere, as an homage to the divine. Cinema brought them a wider audience. In 2003 they sang Gulzar's lyrics in Pinjar and contributed to Dhoop. Songs followed in Tanu Weds Manu and Mausam, both 2011, including "Rangrez", and "Tu Maane Ya Na Maane Dildara" became their best-remembered number. ## Albums and film songs Their albums include Aa Mil Yaar, Paigham-E-Ishq, Ishq Musafir, Folk Music of Punjab and Yaad Piya Ki. The film work also travelled beyond Hindi cinema: in 2010 they sang Thooral Nindralum with Hariharan for the Tamil film Chikku Bukku, before Tanu Weds Manu and Mausam followed in 2011. ## Honours Their honours include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1992), the Tulsi Award (1998) and the Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2003). Puranchand received the Padma Shri in 2005 and had expressed unhappiness that the government honoured him alone rather than the duo, Hindustan Times reported. In 2015 they also received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the PTC awards in Jalandhar. ## Family and teaching The brothers stayed in their ancestral home in Guru Ki Wadali and ran a music school on the guru-shishya model, teaching Sufi, ghazal and devotional music. A pupil told Hindustan Times that Pyarelal never took a penny from students. Pyarelal's wife was Surjit Kaur. They had two sons, Satpal and Sandeep, and three daughters. Puranchand's son Lakhwinder Wadali is a singer who now performs with his father. ## After 2018 Pyarelal died in Amritsar on 9 March 2018, aged 75, after being in hospital since late February. He was cremated at Guru Ki Wadali with a police guard of honour, and Punjab's chief minister ordered ceremonial honours. Puranchand and Lakhwinder were among those who paid respects. In 2025 the Tribune described Lakhwinder as the one carrying the family's musical legacy forward. The village itself had an older musical history, the Tribune noted in 2025: Guru Ki Wadali is remembered as a centre of the musical tradition shaped in Guru Arjan's time, and the brothers' school revived folk and Sufi traditions there for a new generation of students. In Pyarelal's last years, Puranchand had also begun performing with his son Lakhwinder, so the family's fifth generation was already sharing the stage before 2018. ## Who are the Wadali Brothers?
