Waqar Younis is a former Pakistan fast bowler from Vehari district in Punjab, Pakistan, famed for reverse swing at high pace and for the late inswinging yorker. With Wasim Akram he formed the Two Ws, one of the most feared bowling pairs in cricket, taking 373 Test wickets and 416 one day wickets.

## Early life in Vehari district and Sharjah

Waqar Younis Maitla was born on 16 November 1971 in Vehari, Punjab, Pakistan, to a Punjabi Jat family. The ICC, recording his Hall of Fame induction, gives his birthplace as Vehari, and his early schooling and college years were spent across Punjab. He studied for a time at a boarding school in Lahore, then at Sadiq Public School in Bahawalpur, and later at Government College in Burewala, in Vehari district, where he studied arts and economics.

He was raised for part of his childhood in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, where his father worked. He returned to Pakistan and began playing cricket seriously during his teenage years. At school and college he was a wide ranging athlete, a runner, javelin thrower, high jumper and pole vaulter, and he began as a leg spinner before he chose pace bowling. That athletic base helps explain the speed he later bowled with.

## Spotted by Imran Khan and a debut beside Tendulkar

Waqar began his first class career in Pakistan in the 1987/88 season, playing for Multan and other domestic sides. He had played only a handful of first class matches when former Pakistan captain Imran Khan spotted him and brought him into the national side. His own account, retold in his biography, is that Imran watched him in a domestic cup match, came to the ground, and told him the next day that he would be going to Sharjah with the team.

His one day international debut came against the West Indies on 14 October 1989\. His Test debut followed on 15 November 1989 against India at Karachi, in the same match in which Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut. Waqar took four wickets in that drawn match, including Tendulkar and Kapil Dev. A fast bowler from Vehari district had arrived in international cricket in the most visible way possible, against India, at pace, and with wickets.

## Why was Waqar so hard to face?

Waqar was hard to face because he bowled full, fast and late. His trademark, as the ICC puts it, was his ability to reverse swing a cricket ball at high speed, and his best known delivery was the inswinging yorker aimed at the toes, which earned him the nickname Toe Crusher. Batsmen who expected the ball to move one way found it curving the other way, late, and arriving quicker than they had judged.

The numbers show what that method produced. In 87 Tests he took 373 wickets at an average of 23.56, with 22 five wicket hauls and five ten wicket matches. His best Test match figures were 13 for 135 against Zimbabwe at Karachi. In 262 one day internationals he took 416 wickets at an average of 23.84, with 13 five wicket hauls and a best of 7 for 36 against England at Leeds in 2001\. He remains the only bowler to take five wickets in an innings in three consecutive one day internationals, on 4, 6 and 9 November 1990, and he was the fastest and youngest bowler to reach 400 one day wickets. For bowlers with more than 350 Test wickets, his strike rate is the second best, behind only Dale Steyn.

County cricket in England underlined the same point. For Surrey in 1991 he took 113 wickets at 14.65 each, topping the season's first class bowling averages, and he was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1992\. He later won the County Championship with Glamorgan in 1997\. Away from the subcontinent, on English pitches, he was just as difficult to play.

## The Two Ws: Waqar and Wasim Akram

For most of the 1990s Waqar opened the bowling for Pakistan with Wasim Akram, the left arm fast bowler from Lahore. Together they were called the Two Ws. Wasim swung the new ball both ways and controlled the game with skill, while Waqar attacked with pace and made the old ball reverse. Captains could use them at the start of an innings and again when the ball was old, which meant there was rarely a quiet period for a batting side.

That partnership is central to how both men are remembered. The ICC describes them as one of history's most formidable bowling attacks. Waqar finished as Pakistan's second highest wicket taker in Test cricket, behind Wasim, and the pair carried Pakistan's bowling through a decade in which the team was often strongest when its two fast bowlers were together. Their names are still used together because, for opponents, they arrived together.

## Captaincy, World Cups and retirement

Waqar holds the record as the youngest Pakistani Test captain and the fourth youngest Test captain in history, at 22 years and 15 days. In total he led Pakistan in 17 Tests and 62 one day internationals. He was part of the Pakistan squad that finished as runners up at the 1999 World Cup, and he captained his country at the 2003 World Cup.

The 2003 tournament ended early for Pakistan, who went out in the group stage. After it, Waqar gave up the captaincy and was dropped from the side. After a career of nearly 15 years at international level, he announced his retirement from cricket in April 2004\. He finished with 956 wickets in 228 first class matches as well as his international totals, a record built across Pakistan, England and the world.

## Coach twice, commentator and Hall of Fame

After playing, Waqar stayed in the game as a coach and commentator. He first worked as Pakistan's bowling coach from 2006 to 2007\. He was then appointed head coach of Pakistan on 3 March 2010 and led the team to the semi final of the 2010 World Twenty20 and the semi final of the 2011 World Cup, before he stepped down in August 2011, citing personal reasons. He coached Sunrisers Hyderabad as bowling coach in the Indian Premier League in 2013.

In May 2014 he was appointed head coach of Pakistan for a second time, serving until he resigned on 4 April 2016\. That made him a two time head coach of his country, in addition to his spells as bowling coach. In September 2019 he returned again as Pakistan's bowling coach. He has also worked as a television commentator, including for the Nine Network in Australia and Ten Sports in the United Arab Emirates.

His standing in the game was formalised in December 2013, when he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in Dubai. He became its 70th male member and the fifth Pakistani inducted, after Hanif Mohammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad and Wasim Akram. For a bowler from Vehari district who was picked after only a few first class matches, that company tells the story plainly: Waqar Younis changed how fast bowling could be done, and the game has recorded him among its greatest bowlers.
