Amloh is a small historic town in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab, India, founded by Faiz Baksh, the Mughal governor of Sirhind, and later a district headquarters of Nabha State. The 2011 census counted 14,696 residents. Its Nabha era fort still stands at its centre, beside the steel town of Mandi Gobindgarh.

## Where is Amloh?

Amloh is in the Malwa region of eastern Punjab, at 30.61 degrees north and 76.23 degrees east, about 259 metres above sea level. It is a subdivision, tehsil and block headquarters in Fatehgarh Sahib district, governed by a municipal council of 13 wards, with PIN code 147203 and vehicle registration PB-48\. Mandi Gobindgarh, the steel town, lies a few kilometres to the north east, Khanna is to the north west and Nabha to the south west, and the roads between them carry much of the town's daily life.

## History: from Sirhind outpost to Nabha nizamat

Amloh began as a foundation of Faiz Baksh, the Mughal governor of Sirhind, the great provincial city to its north. When Sirhind fell to the Sikh chiefs in 1763, Raja Hamir Singh, the founder of Nabha State, annexed Amloh, and the Nabha rulers developed the town deliberately. Raja Hira Singh of Nabha had the town's fort built, and Amloh was raised to a nizamat headquarters, the district level of administration in the princely state, with courts and revenue offices serving the villages around it. That status, held for well over a century, is what shaped the planned core the town still shows.

The princely order ended in 1947, but the administrative role stayed. When Fatehgarh Sahib district was created in 1992, Amloh became a sub-divisional headquarters, as well as a tehsil and block headquarters. The block covers 100 revenue estates over 26,893 hectares. Part of the old fort building is now occupied by government offices, though the larger part of the fort stands in a dilapidated condition, a reminder that the town's most distinctive building is also its most fragile one.

## Geography and people

The 2011 census counted 14,696 people in the municipal council: 7,932 men and 6,764 women, a sex ratio of 853 women for every 1,000 men. Children aged 0 to 6 numbered 1,479, about 10.06 per cent of the town. The municipal area is about 7 square kilometres, a density of about 2,099 people per square kilometre. Literacy stood at 85.55 per cent, with male literacy at 89.28 per cent and female literacy at 81.21 per cent, well above the Punjab average of the time. Scheduled Castes made up 24.11 per cent of residents, and 5,385 people were recorded as workers, most of them in main work. By faith, Hindus numbered 7,590 and Sikhs 6,695, with a small Muslim community of 315\. Punjabi is the everyday language. The block around the town grows paddy, wheat, potato and sunflower, and a sugar mill at Khumna village, on the Khanna to Amloh road, has changed the cropping pattern since it opened.

## Places of interest

The fort built under Raja Hira Singh is the town's landmark and the natural start of any visit: the old nizamat core around it, with the former courts and the main bazaar, preserves the princely town plan in a way few small Punjab towns still do. A judicial court complex stands in the middle of the town, keeping Amloh an administrative centre in fact as well as in memory. For most visitors the fort is a look from outside rather than a museum visit, and its condition is part of what you see. Beyond the town, Mandi Gobindgarh's furnaces and rolling mills are minutes away, and the historic cities of Sirhind and Nabha, both linked from this page, frame Amloh's own story: the capital it served first, and the state that later raised it.

## Education, health and work today

Amloh's schools include government senior secondary schools for boys and girls and a number of private schools, and its students have a higher education option close at hand: Desh Bhagat University stands only about 2.1 kilometres away, and Maghi Memorial College serves women students in the town. Health care rests on the Community Health Centre, known locally as the civil hospital. For work, the town looks in two directions at once. Its own bazaars, offices and courts employ many residents, while others commute a few kilometres to Mandi Gobindgarh, whose steel economy of rolling mills, furnaces, forging and foundry units draws workers from across the region. Farming families in the block villages supply the third leg: paddy and wheat fields, dairy animals and the sugar mill at Khumna.

## Notable people

Amloh's recorded notables are the rulers who made it, rather than modern celebrities. Faiz Baksh of Sirhind founded the town in its Mughal chapter. Raja Hamir Singh, who founded Nabha State, brought Amloh into that state in 1763 and set its course for the next two centuries. Raja Hira Singh built its fort and confirmed its nizamat status, and the same ruler also ordered the first industrial units at neighbouring Gobindgarh in 1902, an early seed of the steel town Amloh now lives beside. Three rulers, three eras, one small town: that is still the honest summary of Amloh's notable names.

## Getting there

Amloh has no station of its own. The nearest railway stations are Mandi Gobindgarh, about 9 kilometres away, and Khanna, about 11 kilometres away, both on the main line across Punjab, and buses run through the day between Amloh, Gobindgarh, Khanna and Nabha. The nearest airport listed for the town is Ludhiana, about 53 kilometres away. Most visitors arrive by road, combining the fort and the old nizamat core with Mandi Gobindgarh or with Sirhind and Fatehgarh Sahib elsewhere in the district.
