Dera Baba Jaimal Singh is a village and township on the bank of the Beas River in Amritsar district, Punjab, India, and the world headquarters of Radha Soami Satsang Beas. Founded as a small colony in 1891, it now holds thousands of residents and vast satsang gatherings.

## Where is Dera Baba Jaimal Singh?

Dera Baba Jaimal Singh is a village in Baba Bakala tehsil of Amritsar district, in the Majha region of Punjab, India. It stands beside the Beas River, near Beas town, close to the Amritsar to Delhi road and rail corridor. Village listings place it about 9 kilometres from Baba Bakala, the tehsil headquarters, and about 50 kilometres by road from Amritsar city. The census records it as a revenue village of 166 hectares with its own gram panchayat in the Rayya block, PIN code 143204 and village code 037829\. The 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town.

The name explains the place. A dera is a settlement centred on a religious teacher, and this one carries the name of Jaimal Singh, its founder. Postal and railway addresses usually say Beas, but the settlement is its own revenue village, and it is the home of the spiritual head of Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB).

## How the Dera began: 1891 to 1903

Jaimal Singh (1839 to 1903) was born at Ghuman and served in the British Indian Army from the age of seventeen, rising to the rank of havildar. In 1856, after a long search for a teacher, he was initiated at Agra by Shiv Dayal Singh, the founder of the Radha Soami movement, who had begun teaching at Agra in 1861\. After Shiv Dayal Singh died in 1878, Jaimal Singh carried the teachings to Punjab, on his teacher's instruction, as the organisation recounts it.

On retiring from the army, Jaimal Singh settled in 1891 on the west bank of the Beas River. He chose a desolate spot for its solitude, built a simple mud hut to live and meditate in, and as word spread, a small circle of followers formed and he began holding satsangs, the discourses of the path.

The colony took physical shape in 1898, when Sawan Singh, a civil engineer who would become his successor, built the first community well and then a small satsang hall and guest rooms. When Jaimal Singh died on 29 December 1903, he had initiated over two thousand followers, and he left Sawan Singh as his appointed successor.

## Growth under the successors

Sawan Singh led the Dera from 1903 to 1948\. An engineer by profession, he planned its growth over 45 years and designed a large new satsang hall, completed in 1937\. During Partition in 1947, the organisation's histories record, the Dera sheltered refugees of all faiths. Followers know him as the Great Master. His written will of March 1948 named his successor, the first time a Beas master used a formal will.

That successor, Jagat Singh, a retired professor of chemistry, led from 1948 to 1951 through the hard post Partition years. Charan Singh, a lawyer and a grandson of Sawan Singh, then led from 1951 to 1990\. In 1957 he registered Radha Soami Satsang Beas as a non profit society, separating its administration from the person of the master. Under him the Dera grew into a self sufficient township: in the 1950s thousands of volunteers levelled ravines by hand in the service the community calls mitti seva, and centres spread to more than 90 countries.

Gurinder Singh, appointed in 1990, remains the spiritual head, and the present main satsang venue built during his leadership can seat up to 500,000 people. In September 2024, departing from the practice of naming a successor only near the end of a master's life, he named Jasdeep Singh Gill as Sant Satguru Designate. Succession, the organisation states, is by the reigning master's appointment, not by hereditary right, though the last three leaders have also been descendants of Sawan Singh.

## The township today

The organisation describes the Dera as a self contained mini township with about 7,000 residents, most of them full time volunteers, called sevadars, and their families. Volunteers run the administration, funded by unsolicited donations; the organisation says it undertakes no fundraising. Secondary accounts put the developed land at about 1,900 acres, and the official overview says more than 1,250 acres are cultivated for the langar and the residents.

The official overview lists its own water supply and treatment plant, solid waste treatment, an electrical substation with generator backup, and rooftop solar panels generating 19.5 megawatts at peak. The Pathseekers School serves just over 1,000 students, mainly children of residents and hospital staff. A large library is planned to hold nearly 500,000 volumes on world religions and philosophy.

Through a sister body, the Maharaj Jagat Singh Medical Relief Society, the organisation runs the Beas hospital inside the Dera: 260 beds, all treatment free of charge, and about 1,200 outpatients a day, with sister hospitals at Sikanderpur in Haryana and Bhota in Himachal Pradesh. The official site says no distinction is made by a patient's status or religion, and its volunteers have also carried out disaster relief after earthquakes in Gujarat, Kashmir and Nepal.

## Satsang gatherings and visitors

The teachings, as the organisation presents them, belong to the Sant Mat tradition. A living master, or Satguru, is held to be essential as a guide, and the central practice is Surat Shabd Yoga, meditation on the inner sound current. Followers commit at initiation to daily meditation, a lacto vegetarian diet, abstinence from intoxicants and a moral life, while continuing to live and work in the world. The organisation presents the path as open to people of any faith, and holds its meetings without fees, advertising or proselytising.

On specially designated weekends, when the master is present, the organisation says crowds average between 200,000 and 500,000 people. The covered satsang venue can seat up to 500,000\. The free langar, or community kitchen, covers over 48 acres, works around the clock and can serve up to 300,000 people a meal, 50,000 at a single sitting. Visitors stay free in guest hostels, dormitories and large sheds. The network behind these weekends runs to more than 5,000 centres in India and meetings in more than 90 countries.

## Geography and the census village

On paper, Dera Baba Jaimal Singh is a small revenue village, and its land record matches a built settlement rather than a farming village. Of its 166 hectares, the 2011 directory recorded 155 hectares under non agricultural uses and only 11 hectares net sown, every sown hectare irrigated by wells and tube wells. The census counted just 3 cultivators and 3 agricultural labourers among its workers.

The 2011 census counted 594 people in Dera Baba Jaimal Singh: 230 men and 364 women in 399 households, a sex ratio of 1,583 women for every 1,000 men, only 9 children under the age of six, literacy of 78.29 per cent among residents aged seven and above, and 58 workers in all. That small figure sits oddly beside the organisation's own count of about 7,000 Dera residents. The two numbers measure different things: the census counts the 166 hectare revenue village, while the organisation counts the residents of the religious township centred on it. Both figures are given here from their own records.

The 2011 directory recorded a primary health centre, a health sub centre, an allopathic hospital and a dispensary in the village, treated tap water, its own post office, a bank branch and ATM, an anganwadi centre and an ASHA worker. No government school was recorded inside the village in 2011; the nearest primary school was within five kilometres.

## Getting there

The nearest railway station is Beas Junction, a few kilometres away on Dera Road at Beas town. Station code BEAS, it stands on the Ambala to Attari line, the Amritsar to Delhi corridor, with a branch to Tarn Taran, under Northern Railway's Firozpur division. The station is known as one of the cleanest in India, and reports credit Dera volunteers with helping to improve its amenities.

By road, the village is reached by pucca, all weather roads with public and private bus services, and village listings note that a national highway and a major district road pass through. Amritsar, with Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport about 51 kilometres from Beas, is the onward hub for most visitors.
