Guru Ki Wadali, also written Vadali Guru, is a village in Amritsar district in the Majha region of Punjab, India. It lies about 7 km west of Amritsar city, next to Chheharta on the city's western edge, and today it is effectively an urban locality of the growing city, which is why it has no separate village row in the Census of India 2011\. Its name means the Wadali of the Guru, and few places in Punjab carry their history so openly in their name: the village belongs, in memory and in name, to the fifth and sixth Sikh Gurus. ## Guru Arjan's three years here According to the Gurbilas Chhevin Patshahi, Guru Arjan stayed at Vadali Guru for about three years during 1594 to 1597\. Gurdwara Manji Sahib, 200 metres south of the main shrine, marks the spot where the Guru used to sit supervising the work of Bhai Sahari, a Sikh who tilled land here whose produce went to the Guru ka Langar, the community kitchen. An irrigation well dug in Guru Arjan's time, though no longer in use, still exists at the site. The present Manji Sahib building, a square domed room on a brick-paved terrace, was built in the 1980s by descendants of Bhai Sahari, who still manage the gurdwara. ## Birthplace of Guru Hargobind Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru, was born at Vadali Guru on 19 June 1595, in the house where Guru Arjan was then living. Gurdwara Janam Asthan Patshahi Chhevin, also known as Atari Sahib, marks that house. A room in the basement, called Bhora Sahib, is believed to be the very room of the birth. The present building, raised by Baba Kharak Singh Sevavale in the 1960s, has a high-ceilinged hall with a square sanctum and a gallery on three sides, and four further storeys above the sanctum topped by a lotus dome with a tall gold-plated pinnacle. Relic weapons of Guru Hargobind, among them the twin swords of Miri and Piri, are kept at the gurdwara. The two swords are the swords of Miri and Piri, the temporal and spiritual authority that Guru Hargobind joined together when he succeeded Guru Arjan. Kept here, in the village of his birth, they are among the most treasured objects in the gurdwara. ## Damdama Sahib and the Guru's hunt The village's third historic shrine, Gurdwara Damdama Sahib, stands 300 metres south of the village. It is dedicated to Guru Hargobind, who, the Gurbilas account relates, once came to Vadali at the suggestion of Bhai Bhana and, during a chase, killed a wild boar at the spot the shrine now marks. The Janam Asthan and Damdama Sahib gurdwaras are affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and are managed by the same local committee that administers Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib, about one kilometre to the north-west. ## Home of the Wadali Brothers In modern times the village name has travelled the world on concert posters, because Guru Ki Wadali is the home of the Wadali Brothers, Puranchand and Pyarelal, the Sufi singing duo. Born into the fifth generation of a family of singers, the brothers were raised here: their father Thakur Das Wadali made Puranchand learn music, Puranchand spent 25 years as a regular in a wrestling akhara, and Pyarelal played Krishna in the village Ras Lila. Their first performance outside the village was at the Harballabh temple in Jalandhar, and in 1975 All India Radio Jalandhar recorded their first song. The brothers kept their ancestral house in the village, taught music there free to disciples who promised to preserve it, and took the village's name to stages across the world. The brothers sing gurbani, kafi, ghazal and bhajan, avoid electronic instruments, and insist on singing freely and unreservedly, as homage to the divine rather than as a commercial performance. Pyarelal Wadali died in 2018; Puranchand, who received the Padma Shri in 2005, carries the family tradition forward. ## Visiting Guru Ki Wadali The village is an easy trip from Amritsar, about 7 km from the city centre on the Chheharta side. Pilgrims usually combine the three historic gurdwaras here with Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib nearby.
